The 7 Essential Skills

It is crucial in the day today that each leader in the educational system focus on the
development of student’s essential skills to make sure they will be prepared enough to live in the
twenty-first century. Eric Sheninger claimed that “Leaders today must establish a vision and
implement a strategy that creates a teaching and learning culture that provides students with
essentials skill sets- creativity, communication, collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving,
technological proficiency, and global awareness (Sheninger, 2014).
In the twenty-first- century teaching and learning are essential for leaders that want to
survive and make an impact on the life of others. The Seven skills described by Eric Sheninger
and other professional educators such as Bernie Trilling, and Charles Fadel turned to be tools
which will prepare students for future jobs not created yet or discovered. “
As Sheninger said, as a leader in education we should have in our heart the seven
essential skills, I would say we must learn them and practice in our life, as well it should be the
point of each decision we make to prepare our students for the future. Each leader should learn
and teach how to be a productive contributor to society in the 21st century contributing to work
and society. To be a productive contributor to society in our 21st century, you need to be able to
quickly learn the core content of a field of knowledge while also mastering a broad portfolio of
essential learning, innovation, technology, and career skills needed for work and life. We must
learn quickly the core content of a field of knowledge, mastering an abroad portfolio of essential
learning technology, innovation and also career skills which are needed for work and life.
In short, when we as leaders are learning these skills, practice these twenty-first-century
skills and if we focus on teaching them to our students, we as leaders will have students that
know how to communicate, how to be Creativity, how to collaborate with the community, and
with their groups. They will have critical thinking and learning to solve simple and difficult
problems, they will have technological proficiency, and global awareness.
To finalize, as educators we should ask ourselves what should be our goal in education?
Because asking this question will let us focus on what is important to student learning in the 21st
century. Bernie and Fadel (2009) said “Achieving education’s goals in our times is shaped by the
increasingly powerful technologies we have for communicating, collaborating, and learning. And
learning assumes a central role throughout life.” (p. 16)
