Pastiche
A Pastiche is an artistic work in a style that imitates that of another artist's work, an artist,
or a period of time. The two works of art integrated into this design are Piet Zwart’s Trio Booklet
and Francesco Saroglia’s Woolmark Logo. Both works of art can be found in Cramsie’s book
“The Story Of Graphic Design,” Zwart’s work can be found on page 222 image 15.6, and
Piet Zwart’s Trio Booklet was a page printed in 1931 showing a swarm of numbers and
letters in various sizes, typefaces and colors. The only colors used were black and the three
primary colors; yellow, blue and red. This piece was meant to be mainly experimental. Trio
Booklet was printed for a Dutch company called Trio, with the emphasis on the huge ‘3’ in the
bottom right corner. Notice towards the bottom left, the only letters that are composed in a
certain order is a sentence that reads “een Kleine Keuze uit onze lettercellectie” meaning “a
small sample of our collection of type.” This design was very clever, it was a creative way to
show what Zwart could do for his customers and the different colors, sizes, fonts, layering and
Francesco Saroglia’s Woolmark Logo is not accompanied by any typography but was
made with simple symmetry of curvilinear lines of various thicknesses from end to end.
Woolmark is a Merino wool company, their logo is to represent soft threads of spun wool and a
The pastiche that I have created is a mixture of the two art works described above. My
pastiche includes the shape and simplistic design of the Woolmark Logo as well as the diverse
sizes and primary colors of the Trio booklet page. Notice the repetition of the number 3 in the top
left as well as the use of the single sentence towards the bottom of the page saying “This is a
pastiche of Piet Zwart’s Trio Booklet page and Francesco Saraglio’s Woolmark Logo. Also
notice the design features of transparency throughout the whole piece just as shown in the Trio
Booklet page.
