1. Beneath the cross of Jesus 4. Upon that cross of Jesus

I fain would take my stand, Mine eye at times can see
The shadow of a mighty rock The very dying form of One
Within a weary land; Who suffered there for me;
A home within the wilderness, And from my stricken heart with tears
A rest upon the way, Two wonders I confess;
From the burning of the noontide heat, The wonders of redeeming love
And the burden of the day. And my unworthiness.

2. O safe and happy shelter, 5. I take, O cross, thy shadow

O refuge tried and sweet, For my abiding place;
O trysting place where Heaven’s love I ask no other sunshine
And Heaven’s justice meet! Than the sunshine of His face;
As to the holy patriarch Content to let the world go by,
That wondrous dream was giv’n, To know no gain or loss,
So seems my Saviour’s cross to me, My sinful self my only shame,
A ladder up to Heav’n. My glory all the cross.

3. There lies beneath its shadow

But on the further side
The darkness of an awful grave
That gapes both deep and wide;
And there between us stands the cross
Two arms outstretched to save
A watchman set to guard the way
From that eternal grave.
