Math - Monday Workshop
Math - Monday Workshop
Key Competencies, skills : Thinking, managing self, participating, using language, symbols and
texts, and contributing
Learning experiences:
● Introduce the WALT and explain that we use algorithm for numbers that are too difficult
to subtract mentally
● Ask if Ss know what an algorithm is. Write down an addition algorithm example and see
if Ss are familiar with it.
● Tell Ss that I have $754. Get Ss thinking about the number using place value. Each pair
takes $754 worth of play money.
● Tell them that I have spent $238. They remove 238 from their stack.
● They will be unable to subtract 8 ones from 4 ones. Elicit from Ss what they think they
could do to get more ones.
● They exchange 1 ten for 10 ones and take away 8 ones.
● Ss count their remaining money.
● Write the problem using algorithm. Explain that we work from right to left.
● This time show the borrowing of 1 ten for 10 ones using solely algorithm.
● Ss do another example. They can use the play money to help them visualise.
Assessment procedures:
I will assess them based on whether or not they’re able to grasp the concept during the
workshop.
Evaluation of lesson:
The workshop went well. The Ss picked it up a lot quicker than I anticipated. Although they were
able to do the algorithm, some of them were pretty careless when working it out so I’ll get them
to check their answer using addition algorithm for the next workshop. Also, I will try using
bigger numbers (4-digit) to provide a but more of a challenge for them.
