Community Resources

ii. Telephone: (215)425-6203

iii. Email: contactus@huneinc.org

b. HUNE primarily serves, but is not limited to, Hispanic families. HUNE assists

parents with children that have disabilities and offers training programs for

parents to understand how to best care for their children. HUNE pushes for equal

opportunities for Spanish special education programs and interpreters.

c. I chose this resource because it serves a dual purpose. HUNE is not only

multicultural but also serves the special education needs of the community

members. HUNE is an important and great asset for Spanish speaking families

that have children with special needs. I never thought about the fact that it may be

difficult for Hispanic families to find help because of the language barrier, HUNE

is a great equal opportunity, non-profit, organization.

2. The PEAL (Parent Education & Advocacy Leadership) Center

iii. Website: https://PEALcenter.org/

b. The PEAL Center assists families of children and young adults that have

disabilities or special needs. The Center works with all people from ages 0 to 26

years old. The Center reaches out to families across Pennsylvania to inform them

of their services. The Parent Advisors educate, inform, and support families and

the youth in finding inclusive education, health care, and local resources that they

can access. PEAL provides many resources, tools, and materials to help increase

the knowledge and skills of families, individuals, and professionals. PEAL has

access to learning opportunities, both face-to-face and online, that teaches ways to

navigate special education, health care, and transitioning smoothly into adult

services. PEAL pushes for families and youth to become leaders in their

communities and work to improve education and health care systems.

c. I chose PEAL because it is a great resource for individuals of special needs and

their families. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to navigate through special

education in schools or the health care needs. PEAL provides any information and

guidance needed to help not only children but young adults.

3. Lincoln Intermediate Unit 12

iv. Website: www.iu12.org/pages/Lincoln_IU_12

b. The Lincoln Intermediate Unit offers many resources for the local community,

including, special education, translation and interpreter services, and adult

education. However, the one that stood out to me is the migrant and English

Language Learner services they offer for young students.

c. The Intermediate Unit is a wonderful place to go for not only special education

but English Language Learners as well. Gettysburg is a very diverse community,

with many migrant and Spanish speakers in the community. This is a great

resource for those families for their children to have an equal opportunity at

education.

ii. Telephone: (717) 920-9534

iii. Website: http://www.centralpalgbtcenter.org/about

b. The LGBT Center of Central PA is a welcoming community. They offer

programs for young and old members of the LGBT community. One of the

programs, “Common Roads”, is open to the youth and young adults. This

program meets once a week for each age group. This program educates to prevent

discrimination of any kind, this includes, homophobia, biphobia, or transphobia. It

also pushes for empowerment of the LGBT community and provides resources

and training for individuals and families.

c. Through the entire list, this is my favorite resource that I found. Children that are

lesbian, gay, or transgender may not feel they would ever fit in with their fellow

classmates or friends. The program, “Common Roads”, lets children know that

they are not alone.

5. University of Pittsburg Medical Center – Children’s Resource Center (CRC

a. Contact Information

i. Address

iii. Website:

https://www.pinnaclehealth.org/services-and-resources/our-services/childr

ens-health/our-programs/childrens-resource-center-crc

b. The CRC reaches out to children and families suspected of having been neglected

or abused. They create a caring community for these children and reduce the

trauma that they have suffered. They connect families and the child to mental

health services, offer medical exams, and interview children in a careful manner.

Due to the donations that the CRC receives, they do not charge families a cent.
c. This is an extremely valuable resource. Children who suffer from any abuse or

neglect need the assistance which the CRC offers. I thought this was an important

resource to add because children and families that have suffered form some sort

of abuse have this resource to get them on the right course of recovery.
