ME 345 Homework 1 Due date: 30.10.

2018

1. Three shafts and four gears are used to form a gear train that will transmit 7.5 kW from the
motor at A to a machine tool at F. (Bearings for the shafts are omitted in the sketch.) Knowing that
the frequency of the motor is 30 Hz and that the allowable stress for each shaft is 60 MPa,
determine the required diameter of each shaft.

2. Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the beam and determine maximum normal stress.

3. Determine the average shear stress developed in the nails within region AB of the beam. The
nails are located on each side of the beam and are spaced 100 mm apart. Each nail has a diameter
of 4 mm. Take P = 2kN

4. The strut is 10 mm thick and has the cross section shown. If it is subjected to a shear of V =
150 N, determine the maximum shear flow in the strut.

5. Two forces and an internal pressure of 2 bar are applied to the pipe AB as shown. Knowing that
the pipe has inner and outer diameters equal to 35 and 42 mm, respectively, determine the normal
and shearing stresses at (a) point a, (b) point b.
