Cell Analogy Project

Objectives: This is a two part project! A poster or diorama and a presentation
to the class!
• Relate cell organelles functions to real world systems
• Illustrate the systems of a working cell in terms of the systems of the real world
• Produce a product that is neat, clear and creative

Procedure:
● Each student will work in groups of 3 to 4
● Choose a real world working system and decide how each organelle can be
compared to the components and functions of the real world system. It is
best to choose a real world system that relates to your technical area. Your
notes and book are a good resource.
● You will then begin to design your system.
● Each group needs to turn in a large colored drawing or diorama of their
system and a paper (type written) that explains the design of the system in
detail. Some ideas are:
School, Hospital, City, Mall, Country, Restaurant, Lab, Salon, Construction Site,
Prison, etc.

Group Work:
Construction Guidelines:
You must follow these guidelines when designing your city with your group.
● The first thing everyone should do is discuss with your teammates
what kind of system you are going to design and will it be a poster or a
diorama?
● Teams should then decide an overall theme, or style for the system. (ex.
futuristic, modern, western, etc.)
● Try sketching your ideas on copy paper before working on your final
draft. What will your system look like? Where will everything go?
● Don’t be afraid to make revisions or start over. Your system layout and cell
function need to be logical
● When your layout is exactly how you want it, transfer your plan to your final
draft.
● Finally, work as a group to write a one page summary explaining each part of
your system and why you made the cell analogy that you did.

Organelles to be included and MUST be numbered in this order.

1. Cytoplasm
2. DNA
3. Endoplasmic reticulum
4. Golgi Apparatus
5. Lysosome
6. Mitochondria
7. Nucleus
8. Cell Membrane
9. Ribosome
10. Vacuole
11. Cell Wall
12. Chloroplasts
