Daily Lesson Plan – Chemistry Form 4

Subject Chemistry Class 4A

Time / Duration Number Of

Students

Theme / Topic Matter Around Us / Chemical Bond (Chapter 5)

Learning Objective(s) 5.1 Understanding the formation of compounds

Learning Outcome(s) By the end of lesson pupils are able to:-

1. explain the stability of inert gases
2. explain conditions for the formation of chemical bonds.
3. state types of chemical bonds.

Success Criteria By the end of lesson pupils are able to:-

1. relate the stability of inert gas to the octet rule.
2. State correctly the two processes which result in the
formation of chemical bonds (sharing of valence
electrons and transfer of valence electrons).
3. State correctly the two types of chemical bonds
(covalent and ionic bond)

Prior knowledge 1. The Periodic Table of Elements

2. Group 18 (inert gases @ monoatomic gases)
3. Electron Configuration, shell no. 1, 2 and 3 (Chap. 2).

Task 3 – Grroup 3
Explain the type of chemical bonds
 Chemical bond which is formed by sharing of
valence electron between non-metal atoms known
as covalent bond.
 Chemical bond which is formed by the transfer
of valence electron between metal and non-metal
atoms known as ionic bond.

WORKSHEET 01

Instruction: Complete the table below.

Argon, Ar Chlorine, Cl Sodium, Na

Proton Number
18 11

Number of
electron 17

Electron
configuration 2.8.8

Atomic
stability Unstable

Instruction:- Complete the following note by filling in the blanks.

 Chlorine atoms are unstable because the outermost shell

is filled with only 7 valence electron.
 Each chlorine atom needs 1 electron to attain the octet
configuration.
 Both chlorine atoms shared 1 valence electron to form a
stable chlorine molecule.
 Chemical bond which resulted from the sharing of
electron by two chlorine atoms is known as covalent
bond.

 Sodium atom is unstable because the outermost shell is

only filled with 1 valence electron.
 Sodium atom transfer 1 electron to chlorine atom.
 Chlorine atom form a chloride ion, Cl-
 Sodium atom form a sodium ion, Na+
 Chemical bond which formed between Cl- and Na+ is known
as ionic bond.
