Morning Prayers

After arising from sleep, stand, and make the Sign of

the Cross saying:
In the Name of the Father, and of the
+Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
Then say:
O Lord, Thou shalt open my lips. And
my mouth shall declare Thy praise.
Now Psalm 69 shall be said:
O God, be attentive unto helping me;
O Lord, make haste to help me. Let
them be shamed and confounded that
seek after my soul. Let them be
turned back and brought to shame
that desire evils against me. Let them
be turned back straightway in shame
that say unto me: Well done! Well
done! Let them be glad and rejoice in
Thee all that seek after Thee. O God,
and let them that love Thy salvation
say continually: The Lord be
magnified. But as for me, I am poor
and needy: O God, come unto mine
aid. Mine Helper and my Deliverer
1
Art Thou, O Lord; make no longer
tarrying. Glory be to the Father, and
to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As
it was in the beginning, both now and
ever, and unto the ages of ages.
Amen.

Veni Creator
Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest,
Vouchsafe within our souls to rest,
Come with Thy Grace and heavn’ly
aid,
And fill the hearts which Thou hast
made.

To Thee the Comforter we cry,

To Thee the Gift of God Most High,
The Fount of life, the Fire of love,
The soul’s anointing from above.

The Sevenfold Gifts of Grace are

Thine,
O Finger of the Hand Divine;
True Promise of the Father Thou,

2
Who dost the tongue with speech
endow.

Thy Light to every sense impart,

And shed Thy Love in every heart;
Thine Own unfailing Might supply
To strengthen our infirmity.

Drive far away our ghostly foe,

And Thine abiding peace bestow;
If Thou be our preventing Guide,
No evil can our steps betide.

Make Thou to us the Father known,

Teach us the Eternal Son to own,
Be this our never changing Creed,
Thou from the Father dost Proceed.

O Father that we ask be done,

Through Jesus Christ Thine Only
Son,
Who with the Holy Ghost and thee,
Shall live and reign eternally. Amen.
V. Thou wilt send forth Thy Spirit,
and they shall be created.

3
R. And Thou shalt renew the face of
the Earth.
V. Let us pray. O God, to Whom all
hearts are open, all desires known,
and from whom no secrets are hid;
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by
the Inspiration of Thine Holy Spirit,
so that we may perfectly love Thee
and worthily magnify Thee.
+Through Our Lord Jesus Christ Thy
Son, Who liveth and reigneth with
Thee, in the Unity of the Same Holy
Ghost, God, through all the ages of
ages. Amen.
Then let him say these Psalms:
Psalm 3
O Lord, why are they multiplied that
afflict me? Many rise up against me.
Many say unto my sou: There is no
salvation for him in his God. But
Thou, Lord, Art mine Helper, my
Glory, and the Lifter up of mine
heard. I cried unto the Lord with my
voice, and He heard me out of His
Holy Mountain. I laid me down and
4
slept; I awoke, for the Lord will help
me. I will not be afraid of ten
thousands of people that set
themselves against me round about.
Arise, O Lord, save me, O my God,
for Thou hast smitten all who without
cause are mine enemies; the teeth of
sinners has Thou broken. Salvation is
of the Lord, and Thy blessing is upon
Thy people. +Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son, and to the Holy
Ghost. As it was in the beginning,
both now and ever, and unto the ages
of ages. Amen.

Psalm 24
Unto Thee, O Lord, have I lifted up
my soul. O my God, in Thee have I
trusted; let me never be put to shame,
nor let mine enemies laugh me to
scorn. Yea; let none that wait on Thee
be put to shame; let them be ashamed
which are lawless without a cause.
Make Thy ways, O Lord, known unto
me, and teach me Thy paths. Lead me
in Thy truth and teach me, for Thou
5
Art God my Saviour; for on Thee
have I waited all the day long.
Remember Thy Compassions, O
Lord, and Thy Mercies, for they are
from everlasting. The sins of mine
youth and mine ignorances remember
not; according to Thy Mercy
remember Thou me, for the Sake of
Thy Goodness, O Lord. Good and
Upright is the Lord; therefore will He
set a law for them that sin in the way.
He will guide the meek in judgment,
He will teach the meek His ways. All
the ways of the Lord are Mercy and
Truth, unto them that seek after His
Covenant and His Testimonies. For
the sake of Thy Name, O Lord, be
gracious unto my sin; for it is great.
Who is the man that feareth the Lord?
He will set him a law in the way
which He hath chosen. His soul shall
dwell among good things, and his
seed shall inherit the Earth. The Lord
is the Strength of them that fear Him,
and His Covenant shall be manifested
unto them. Mine eyes are ever toward
6
the Lord, for He it is that will draw
my feet out of the snare. Look upon
me, and have mercy on me; for I am
one only-begotten and poor. The
afflictions of mine heart are
multiplied; bring me out from my
necessities. Behold my lowliness and
my toil, and forgive all my sins. Look
upon mine enemies, for they are
multiplied, and with an unjust hatred
have they hated me. Keep my soul
and rescue me; let me not be put to
shame, for I have hoped in Thee. The
innocent and the upright have cleaved
unto me, for I waited on Thee, O
Lord. Redeem Israel, O God, out of
all his afflictions. Glory be…

Psalm 50
Have mercy on me, O God, according
to Thy Great Mercy; and according to
the multitude of Thy Compassions
blot out my transgressions. Wash me
thoroughly from mine iniquity, and
cleanse me from my sin. For I know
mine iniquity, and my sin is ever
7
before me. Against Thee only have I
sinned and done this evil before Thee,
that Thou mightest be justified in Thy
words, and prevail when Thou art
judged. For behold, I was conceived
in iniquities, and in sins did my
mother bear me. For behold, Thou
hast loved the truth; the hidden and
secret things of Thy Wisdom hast
Thou made manifest unto me. Thou
shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I
shall be made clean; Thou shalt wash
me, and I shall be made whiter than
snow. Thou shalt make me to hear joy
and gladness; the bones that be
humbled, they shall rejoice. Turn Thy
Face away from my sins, and blot out
all mine iniquities. Create in me a
clean heart, O God, and renew a right
spirit within me. Cast me not away
from Thy Presence, and take not
Thine Holy Spirit from me. Restore
unto me the joy of Thy salvation, and
with Thy Governing Spirit establish
me. I shall teach transgressors Thy
ways, and the ungodly shall turn back
8
unto Thee. Deliver me from blood-
guiltiness, O God, Thou God of my
salvation; my tongue shall rejoice in
Thine Righteousness. O Lord, Thou
shalt open my lips, and my mouth
shall declare Thy praise. For if Thou
hadst desired sacrifice, I had given it;
with whole burnt offerings Thou shalt
not be pleased. A sacrifice unto God
is a broken spirit; an heart that is
broken and humbled God will not
despise. Do good, O Lord, in Thy
good pleasure unto Sion, and let the
walls of Jerusalem be builded. Then
shalt Thou be pleased with a sacrifice
of righteousness, with oblation and
whole-burnt offerings. Then shall
they offer bullocks upon Thine Altar.
Glory be...

Creed
I believe in One God, the Father
Almighty, Maker of Heaven and
Earth, and of all things visible and
invisible. And in One Lord Jesus
Christ, the Only-Begotten Son of
11
God, Begotten of the Father before all
ages. God of God, Light of Light,
Very God of Very God. Begotten, not
made, Consubstantial to the Father,
by Whom all things were made. Who
for us men, and for our salvation,
[bow:] came down from Heaven; and
was Incarnate by the Holy Ghost of
the Virgin Mary, and was made Man;
[rise] and was Crucified also for us
under Pontius Pilate. He Suffered and
was Buried; and the Third Day He
Rose Again according to the
Scriptures; and Ascended into
Heaven; and Sitteth on the Right
Hand of the Father. And He shall
Come Again with Glory to Judge both
the quick and the death; Whose
Kingdom shall have no end. And in
the Holy Ghost, the Lord, the Giver
of life, Who Proceedeth from the
Father; Who, with the Father and the
Son together is worshipped and
glorified, Who spake by the Prophets.
And in One, Holy, Catholic and
Apostolic Church. I acknowledge
12
One Baptism for the remission of
sins. And I look for the resurrection
of the dead, and +the life of the world
to come.

Our Father
Our Father, Who Art in Heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy
Kingdom Come, Thy Will be done,
on Earth, as it is in Heaven. Give us
this day our daily bread, and forgive
us our trespasses as we forgive those
that trespass against us. And lead us
not into temptation. But deliver us
from evil.

Angelic Salutation
Hail, Mary, Full of Grace, the Lord is
with thee. Blessed art thou among
women, and blessed is the fruit of thy
womb, Jesus.

Then let him say the following Prayers:

Lord, Thou hast fashioned and
formed me, be Merciful, O God, be
Merciful to me a sinner.
13
Morning Prayers
May the Power of Thine Holy Cross,
I beseech Thee, O Lord, go before me
and lead me through the day,
wheresoever I may be. In Thy Mercy
so guide me today that mine enemy
may find in me nothing that is his, but
all that is Thine. Or, should aught of
evil be so found by reason of my
frailty, may Thy Loving-Kindness
quickly blot it out. May Thine Holy
Angel guard me and bring me safe
and unharmed unto the evening hour.
Amen.

Through Thy Power and that of Thine

Holy Cross, pour forth upon me Thy
Blessing, O Lord my God, I beseech
Thee, in this the first hour of the day.
Grant that by the Help of Thine Holy
Angels mine every act, mine every
footstep, mine every word, and mine
every desire throughout the day may
be directed according to Thine Holy
Will. Amen.
14
O Christ, Who hast bought us with
Thy Precious Blood, save us who
adore Thee as our God. Do Thou save
us, Who didst Suffer for us hanging
on the Cross. With that Cross we sign
our +foreheads and +hearts,
venerating Thee and this same Holy
Sign, and begging that by its power
Thou wilt shield us and protect us all
the days of our life, and, snatching us
from the fires of hell, wilt bestow on
us the joys of the eternal resurrection.
For this do we pray, O Saviour of the
world, Who with the Father and the
Holy Ghost, livest and reignest, God,
through all the ages of ages. Amen.

O Redeemer of the world, by this

+Sign of the Cross guard us from all
evil occurrences. Thou Who dist save
Peter on the sea, have mercy on us.

Look favourably, O Lord, upon this

morning offering of Thy suppliants;
15
supply the secret needs of our hearts
that no dark cloud of evil passion
may overshadow those whom the
light of Thine Heavenly Grace hath
strengthened. Through Jesus Christ,
O Lord. Amen.

O Almighty and Everlasting God, to

Whom nothing is unknown, nothing
is hidden, send forth Thy Light into
our hearts, that we, knowing Thy
Precepts and walking in the way of
Thy Commandments, may never go
astray from Thee. Through Our Lord
Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth
and reigneth with Thee, in the Unity
of the Holy Ghost, God, through all
the ages of ages. Amen.

We thank Thee, O Lord, Father

Almighty, Eternal God, that Thou
hast brought us through the night to
this morning hour: grant, we beseech
Thee, that we may pass through the
day without sin, so that when evening
comes we may again render our
16
thanks to Thee, O God. Through Our
Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who
liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the
Unity of the Holy Ghost, God,
through all the ages of age. Amen.

To Thee, the True Light and Author of

Light, do we pray that Thou wouldst
dispel the darkness of our evil deeds,
and bestow upon us those heavenly
joys which Thou hast promised.
Through the Same Our Lord Jesus
Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and
reigneth with Thee, in the Unity of
the Holy Ghost, God, through all the
ages of ages. Amen.

We beseech Thee, O Lord, strengthen

Thy faith in our hearts, and ever let
the light of Thine Holy Ghost shine
brightly within us. Through the Same
Our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who
liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the
Unity of the Same Holy Ghost, God,
through all the ages of ages. Amen.

17
We pray, O Lord, that Thy truth may
be as a light in our hearts, and that
every false deceit of our enemy may
be exposed. Through the Same Our
Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who
liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the
Unity of the Holy Ghost, God,
through all the ages of ages. Amen.

O Lord, Who hast brought us to the

beginning of this day, sanctify us by
Thine Holy Blessing. Ever shield us
from the snares of the devil, and grant
that we may walk in honesty and
uprightness all this day and have ever
before our eyes the end of our life.
Mayest Thou hear us to-day when we
cry to Thee, and mayest Thou bring
us safe and unharmed unto the
evening. Through Jesus Christ Thy
Son Our Lord, Who livest and
reignest with Thee, in the Unity of the
Holy Ghost, God, through all the ages
of ages. Amen.

18
Thee, the Holy Lord, in the highest,
do we serve, Thou Who didst will to
undergo the gibbet of the Cross unto
the salvation of the human race; do
Thou save us all we who glorify
Thee, our God. Amen.

[Say this Prayer before the icon of Our Lord Jesus

Christ]
Another Prayer to Jesus Christ
O Lord Jesus Christ, Who on account
of our sins didst come from the
Bosom of the Father that Thou
mightest redeem us from the sin of
Adam, for I know, believe, and
confess that not on account of the
righteous, but on account of sinners
Thou didst Will to dwell on the Earth.
Hear and hearken to me, O my Lord
God, hear me the sinner, the guilty
one, the unworthy one, the careless
one, the punishable one. To Thee, O
Lord, I confess all my sins and all
mine evils which I have done in this
particular age or the other crimes and
19
impulses I have committed, in
delight, in word, in doing, or in the
thoughts of iniquity; I humbly ask
from Thee Mercy for all these sins. I
have sinned, O Lord! Nevertheless, I
have not denied Thee, for Thou Art
the Loving One and the Merciful
One, and Thou dost show Thy
Mercies upon all Thy works. Thee I
praise the Lord. Thee I glorify! Thee
in the Divinity of the Holy Trinity I
begging adore! And to Thee I give
thanks in all mines infirmities for I
have none other hope but in Thee, the
Creator God of all things. At the gate
of Thy Church, O Lord Jesus Christ, I
take refuge, and at the pledge of Thy
Saints, prostrating, I ask forgiveness.
O Lord, for Thy Great Mercy do
Thou grant to me, the sinner, perfect
remission of all my sins. I pray Thee,
O Lord, and I supplicate, that in all
my life Thou mayest preserve me and
Thou mayest deign to help me in that
tremendous hour when my soul shall
be taken from my body. I beg Thee, O
20
Lord, that Thou mayest grant to me,
the sinner, both perfect remission of
sins and the right sense of the True
Faith. O Lord God Almighty, deliver
my soul from the lower inferno. O
Lord God, deliver me from the
undying fire. O Lord God, deliver me
from all tribulation and anguish. O
Lord God, deliver me from all evil,
and from all the snares of mine
enemies visible and invisible. I ask
the Twenty and Four Elders and I
pray all the Holy Angels and all the
Patriarchs and Prophets of God I beg,
also all the Apostles, Martyrs,
Confessors, Virgins, I invoke, and I
ask all the Saints and Elect of God to
help me, and I beseech that in all my
necessities they will help me, and
may they constantly keep my life
from all contamination of pollution.
May they also simultaneously
implore from God; by assiduous
prayers, the remission of all my sins.
O Lord God Omnipotent, do Thou
hear my prayer and let my cry come
21
unto Thee, for against Thee Alone
have I sinned and before Thee have I
done evil. My sins, O Lord, are
innumerable, therefore I intensely beg
from Thee, O Lord, forgiveness for
all my sins and negligences, for vain
glory, concupiscence of the flesh,
bodily pollution, detraction and
murmuring, envy, pride, drowsiness,
sloth, adultery and fornication, for I
came slowly to the work of God, for I
have passed time negligently, and for
all the sins I did commit in mine
youth which I am not able to say nor
think of due to their great multitude. I
ask forgiveness for all these, from
Thee, the Lord God, and I implore
and desire the forgiveness, having
been gained by all Thy Saints. Hear
me, O Lord, just as Thou didst hear
Susanna and didst deliver her from
hands of the two false-speakers. Hear
me, O Lord, just as Thou didst hear
Peter in the sea, and Paul in chains.
Do Thou be lenient to my soul, O
Lord. Do Thou gird me about, O
22
Lord, with the guardianship of Thine
Holy Angels, and may Thy
Benediction strongly go before me
that vigilantly without sleep Thine
Holy Guardianship will be sleeplessly
protecting me from all the snares of
all enemies visible and invisible. Hear
me, O Lord, and compassionately
have mercy on me Thy servant. For
Thou Art my True God; Thou Art
mine Holy Master; Thou Art mine
Eternal King; Thou Art my Most
Powerful Physician; Thou Art the
Living Bread; Thou Art the Priest
unto eternity; Thou Art my Great
Loving-Kindness; Thou Art mine
Wholesome Redemption; Thou Art
my Future Hope. Thee, O Lord, I
pray, Thee I ask, that in Thee I may
live, through Thee may I walk, in
Thee may I rest, through Thee may I
rise, and may I happily attain to Thee,
O Lord my God; O Lord Jesus Christ,
God Almighty, do Thou send Thy
Good and Governing Spirit, and may
He guard my soul and my body in all
23
health and purity, and grant, O Lord,
to me the sinner, true humility,
patience, steadfastness, sobriety, faith,
hope, perfect charity, and felicity in
the consumation of Thine Holy Will
that having been cleansed from all
sins and by the Grace of Thy Spirit,
having been washed in mind and
soul, may I arrive at Thy Mercy, and
may I come to Thy Blessed and
Perpetual Vision, O Saviour of the
world. Thou Who with the Same
Father and the Same Holy Ghost,
livest and reignest, God, unto the ages
of ages. Amen.
[Kiss the icon of Christ]

[Say this Prayer before the icon of the Virgin Mother

of God]
Prayer to the Virgin
O Holy and Glorious Birthgiver of
God and Ever-Virgin Mary, thou who
was found worthy to bear the Saviour
of the world, do thou hear me and
have mercy upon me now and ever on
account of the honour of thine holy
24
and most excellent virginity. Thee I
humbly beseech to be my deliverer
and helper with Almighty God, in
order that the Devout Shepherd and
Prince of peace may cleanse me from
the stains of my sins and free me
from the darkness of hell and bring
me to eternal life. And may He Who
through thee, Most Pure Virgin, came
into this world and saved the race of
men with His Own Blood, and
destroyed the gates of hell, and
opened the gates of the Heavenly
Kingdom, be pleased to save and
preserve me through His Mercy in
this world and after the ending of this
failing life grant me some portion of
eternal blessedness in the society of
the saints. Amen.
[Kiss the icon of the Virgin]

Prayers to the Virgin and All

the Saints
Assist me, I pray, all ye Saints of God
to whose protection I fly, assist me
before death lays its hand on me;
25
before the wrath of God strikes me,
before the grave closes over me. Do
thou, O Holy Michael, with all the
army of Angels, pray for me. Snatch
me from the power of mine
adversaries: help me to love my God,
to possess purity of heart and a strong
faith. O Holy Patriarchs and Prophets,
do ye too assist me to obtain the gifts
of kindness to others, patience,
constancy, and holy perseverance. O
ye blessed Apostles, free me from my
bondage, defend me in peril,
strengthen me in the hour of trial, and
bring me at length into the kingdom
of life. May holy charity and true
peace, may purity of soul and body,
be granted to me through your
intercessions, O Holy Martyrs. O
Glorious Confessors of God, pray for
me; through your merits and help
may I obtain a yearning after
heavenly things, may I possess a love
for uprightness of life, may I ever
strive to keep the commandments of
God. O all ye Holy Virgins, to you do
26
I turn, help me to have good will to
all, obtain for me health of soul and
body, brotherly love, prudence, and
the spirit of justice, fortitude, and
temperance. Again and again, yea
always, will I turn to you, O all ye
holy Saints: come to mine aid: take
pity on me; raise me up when I fall;
correct me when I err. Through your
intercession may I be granted a pure
conscience, a salutary sorrow, an
upright life, and an ending precious in
God’s Sight; that through you I may
come to the company of the blessed
through the Mercy of Him Who
reigns, One God and Three Persons,
through all the ages of ages. Amen.

Another Prayer to All the

Saints
Angels and Archangels, Virtues and
Powers, Principalities and
Dominations, Thrones, Cherubim and
Seraphim, Patriarchs and Prophets,
Apostles, Martyrs and Confessor, and
all ye Holy Virgins, all Saints of God,
27
pray ye for me, especially thou, my
Guardian Angel, as well as Saints N.,
N., etc., &. N., that I may be made
worthy to have eternal life in the
heavens. Amen.
[Kiss the icons of the saints]

Prayers before the Holy Cross

Every Friday Psalm 66 with prostrations and prayers
are made in commemoration of Our God Jesus Christ’s
Suffering for mankind. Prostrate to the earth, before
the Holy Cross, and say:
God be gracious unto us and bless us,
and cause His Face to Shine upon us
and have mercy upon us. That we
may know upon the earth Thy way,
among all the nations Thy salvation.
Let the peoples give Thee praise, O
God, let all the peoples praise Thee.
Let the nations be glad and rejoice,
for Thou shalt judge the peoples with
uprightness; and nations shalt Thou
guide upon the earth. Let the peoples
give Thee praise, O God, let all the
peoples praise Thee; the earth hath
yield her fruit. Let God, our God,
28
bless us; let God bless us, and let all
the ends of the earth fear Him.
+Glory be…

+We worship Thee, O Christ, and we

bless thee, for by Thine Holy Cross,
Thou hast redeeemed the world!
+Behold the Wood of the Cross, on
which the Saviour of the world was
suspended, come ye, let us adore
Him!
+O Glorious Cross, O Adorable
Cross, O Precious Wood and
Admirable Sign, through which both
the devil is defeated and the world is
redeemed by the Blood of Christ!
O Devout Crucified One, Redeemer
of all peoples, Who for the salvation
of the world suffered the death of the
Cross, do Thou kindly regard me with
Thy countenance, and, to Thee I offer,
receive Thou praises. Amen.
Do Thou look down upon, we
beseech, O Lord our God, this Thy
family, for which Our Lord Jesus
Christ was contented to be betrayed
29
into the hands of wicked men, and to
undergo the torment of the Holy
Cross. Through the Same Our Lord
Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth
with Thee and the Holy Ghost, God,
through all the ages of ages. Amen.
[Kiss the Feet of Christ on the Cross]

Prayers for the Departed

O God, the Giver of life and the
Restorer of our mortal bodies: Thou
hast willed to receive the petitions of
sinners; hearken to the prayers which,
with tears and special devotion, we
offer to Thee for the souls of Thy
servants N., N., etc. Deign to free it
[them] from the pains of hades, and
place it [them] in the ranks of Thy
saints. Clothe it [them] in the garment
and stole of immortality, and order
that it [them] be comforted by the
joys of Paradies. Through Our Lord
Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth
and reigneth with Thee, in the Unity
of the Holy Ghost, God, through all
the ages of ages. Amen.
30
O God, Whose property is ever to
have mercy and to forgive, receive
our humble petition for the souls of
Thy servants and handmaidens [N.,
N., etc] and grant them the remission
of all their sins; that being loosed
from the bonds of death, they may
attain unto eternal life. Thou That
with the Father and the Holy Ghost,
livest and reignest, God, through all
the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer to the Most Holy Trinity

O Clement Trinity, One Divinity, One
Majesty! Have mercy upon us! Amen.

Prayer to Our Lord Jesus

Christ
Be lenient and forgiving, have mercy
upon us, O Almighty God Jesus
Christ, Who livest and reignest unto
the ages of ages. Amen.

31
Morning Prayer of St. Jerome
the Presbyter
O Lord God of Sabaoth, be attentive
unto me as I rise in the morning, O
Lord, and govern all mine actions and
my words and my words and my
thoughts, lead Thou me in the right
way, that I may pass the whole day in
Thy Will. Grant to me, O Lord, Thy
fear, compunction of heart, humility
of mind, a pure conscience, that I may
despise the world, look for heaven,
hate sin, and love righteousness. Take
away from me, O Lord, the solicitude
of the world, the appetite for gluttony,
the concupiscence of fornication, the
love of money, the pestilence of
wrath, the sorrow of the world,
listlessness, worthless joy, and
worldly pride. Plant in me, O Lord,
the good virtues: abstinence of the
flesh, and chastity of the body,
patience, humility, not feigned but
true fraternal love. Guard my mouth
that I may not speak vanities, not tell
worldly tales, nor detract others in
32
their absence, that I may not curse my
parents, that I many not answer
cursing with cursing, but rather with
blessing. I will praise the Lord in all
times and His praise shall ever be in
my mouth. Guard mine eyes lest they
see what is evil to lust after it, not the
delicacies of this world world nor the
goods of my neighbour, but let me
say with Holy David, “Mine eyes are
ever toward the Lord, for He it is that
will draw my feet out of the snare,”
[Ps. 24:16], and again, “Unto Thee
have I lifted up mine eyes, unto Thee
that dwellest in heaven.” [Ps. 122:1]
Guard mine ears lest they listen to
slander, lies, or idle talk, but let them
be opened every day to listen to the
word of God. Guard my feet lest they
go after idleness but may they
cooperate with my mind in prayer to
God. Guard mine hands lest they
often stretch out for money, but,
rather may they be elevated in prayers
to the Lord of the world and the pure,
that I may be able to say like the
33
Prophet, “May the lifting up of mine
hands be an evening sacrifice.” [Ps.
140:2] Through Our Lord Jesus
Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and
reigneth with Thee, in the Unity of
the Holy Ghost, God, through all the
ages of ages. Amen.

Second Prayer
Let us walk in the prosperity of the
light of this day,
In the Virtue of the Most High God,
the greatest of gods,
In the good pleasure of Christ,
In the Light of the Holy Ghost,
In the Faith of the Patriarchs,
In the Righteousness of the Prophets,
In the Peace of the Apostles,
In the Joy of the Angels,
In the Splendour of the Saints,
In the Works of the Monks
In the Virtue of the Just,
In the Martyrdom of the Martyrs,
In the Chastity of the Virgins,
In the Wisdom of God,
In much patience,
34
In abstinence of the flesh,
In continence of the tongue,
In the abundance of peace,
In the praises of the Trinity,
In acute sense,
In ever good actions,
In spiritual forms,
In Divine words,
In blessings,
In this is the path of all laboring for
Christ, Who leadeth the Saints after
their departure eternally into joy, that
I may hear the voice of the Angels
praising God and saying: Holy, Holy,
Holy!

In the Name of the Father, and of the

+Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Here the Morning Prayers may be ended.

But, if so desired, the following prayers may
be said here, or at the end of Evening
Prayer, or any other time of the day:

Preparation before Holy
Communion
Psalm 22. The Lord is My Shepherd, and
I shall not want. In a place of green
pasture, there hath He made me to dwell;
beside the water of rest hath He nurtured
me. He hath converted my soul, He hath
led me on the paths of righteousness for
His Name's sake. For though I should
walk in the midst of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me;
Thy rod and Thy staff, they have
comforted me. Thou hast prepared a table
before me in the presence of them that
afflict me. Thou hast anointed mine head
with oil, and Thy Chalice which filleth
me, how excellent it is . And Thy Mercy
shall pursue me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the House of the Lord
unto length of days.
Glory be...

Psalm 23. The Earth is the Lord' s and

the fulness thereof: the world, and all
they that dwell therein. He hath founded
it upon the seas, and upon the rivers hath
He prepared it. Who shall ascend into the
41
mountain of the Lord? Or who shall
stand in His Holy Place? He that is
innocent in hands and pure in heart, who
hath not received his soul in vain, and
hath not sworn deceitfully to his
neighbour. Such a one shall receive a
blessing from the Lord and Mercy from
God his Saviour. This is the generation of
them that seek the Lord, of them that
seek the Face of the God of Jacob. Lift
up your gates, O ye princes; and be ye
lifted up, ye everlasting gates, and the
King of Glory shall enter in. Who is this
King of Glory? The Lord Strong and
Mighty, the Lord, Mighty in war. Lift up
your gates, O ye princes; and be ye lifted
up, ye everlasting gates, and the King of
Glory shall enter in. Who is this King of
Glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King
of Glory.
Glory be...

Psalm 50. Have mercy upon me, O God,

according to Thy Great Mercy; and
according to the multitude of Thy
Compassions blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin. For I know
42
mine iniquity, and my sin is ever before
me. Against Thee only have I sinned and
done this evil before Thee, that Thou
mightest be justified in Thy words, and
prevail when Thou art judged. For
behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and
in sins did my mother bear me. For
behold, Thou hast loved truth; the hidden
and secret things of Thy Wisdom hast
Thou made manifest unto me. Thou shalt
sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be
made clean; Thou shalt wash me, and I
shall be made whiter than snow. Thou
shalt make me to hear joy and gladness;
the bones that be humbled, they shall
rejoice. Turn Thy Face away from my
sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and
renew a right spirit within me. Cast me
not away from Thy Presence, and take
not Thine Holy Spirit from me. Restore
unto me the joy of Thy salvation, and
with Thy Governing Spirit establish me. I
shall teach transgressors Thy ways, and
the ungodly shall turn back unto Thee.
Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O
God, Thou God of my salvation; my
tongue shall rejoice in Thy
43
Righteousness. O Lord, Thou shalt open
my lips, and my mouth shall declare Thy
Praise. For if Thou hadst desired
sacrifice, I had given it; with whole-burnt
offerings Thou shalt not be pleased. A
sacrifice unto God is a broken spirit; an
heart that is broken and humbled God
will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in
Thy good pleasure unto Sion; and let the
walls of Jerusalem be builded. Then
shalt Thou be pleased with a sacrifice of
righteousness, with oblation and whole-
burnt offerings. Then shall they offer
bullock upon Thine Altar.
Glory be…

Psalm 84. Thou hast been gracious, O

Lord, unto Thy land; Thou hast turned
back the captivity of Jacob. Thou hast
forgiven the iniquities of Thy people,
Thou hast covered all their sins. Thou
hast made all Thy wrath to cease, Thou
hast turned back from the wrath of Thine
anger. Turn us back, O God of our
salvation, and turn away Thine anger
from us. Wilt Thou be wroth with us unto
the ages? Or wilt Thou draw out Thy
wrath from generation to generation? O
44
God, Thou wilt turn and quicken us, and
Thy people shall be glad in Thee. Show
us, O Lord, Thy Mercy, and Thy
salvation do Thou give unto us. I will
hear what the Lord God will speak in me;
for he will speak peace to His people and
to His Saints and to them that turn their
heart unto Him. Surely nigh unto them
that fear Him in His salvation, that glory
may dwell in our land. Mercy and truth
are met together, righteousness and peace
have kissed each other. Truth is sprung
up out of the earth, and righteousness
hath looked down from heaven. Yea, for
the Lord will give goodness, and our land
shall yield her fruit. Righteousness shall
go before Him and shall set His
Footsteps in the way. Glory be...

Psalm 115 and 116. I believed,

wherefore I spake; I was humbled
exceedingly. As for me, I said in mine
ecstasy: Every man is a liar. What shall I
render unto the Lord for all that He hath
rendered unto me? I will take the
Chalice of Salvation, and I will call upon
the Name of the Lord. My vows unto the
45
Lord will I pay in the Presence of all His
people. Precious in the Sight of the Lord
is the death of His Saints. O Lord, I am
Thy servant; I am Thy servant and the
son of Thine handmaid. Thou hast
broken my bonds asunder. I will
sacrifice a sacrifice of praise unto Thee,
and I will call upon the Name of the
Lord. My vows unto the Lord will I pay
in the presence of all His people, in the
Courts of the House of the Lord, in the
midst of thee, O Jerusalem. O praise the
Lord, all ye nations; praise Him all ye
peoples. For He hath made His Mercy to
prevail over us, and the Truth of the Lord
abideth for ever.
Glory be...

LITANY FOR HOLY COMMUNION

O GOD the Father of Heaven, have mercy
upon us.
O God the Son, Redeemer of the world, ……
O God the Holy Ghost;
O Holy Trinity, One God;
O God Our Saviour; help us.
From the dominion of all vices; deliver us, O
Lord.
From blindness of heart;
From all evil;
46
We sinners do beseech Thee hear us.
That Thou spare us: we beseech Thee hear
us.
That Thou give us a sure hope:
That Thou vouchsafe us a Right Faith:
That Thou bestow on us perfect love;
That Thou mortify in us the loathsome forms
of all vices;
That by Thine Incarnation Thou wouldst
open for us an entrance into the Holy of
Holies;
That by This Most Holy Mystery Thou
wouldst renew our souls and bodies;
That by It Thou wouldst purify our
consciences;
That Thou suffer not this tremendous
Mystery to be our condemnation;
That we may handle with pure hands This
Ineffable Sacrament;
That we may receive it with pure minds;
That by It we may obtain pardon of all sins;
That by It we may be able evermore to cleave
unto Thee;
That by It we may be thought worthy to have
Thee dwelling in us, and ourselves to dwell
in Thee;
That it may please Thee to pour into our
hearts the Grace of the Holy Ghost;
That it may please Thee to preserve the
Christian people who have been redeemed by
Thy Most Precious Blood;
47
That Thou vouchsafe us a place of
repentance.

Prayer of St. Ambrose

We entreat Thee also, O Lord, by This Most
Holy Sacrifice of Thy Body and Blood,
wherewith we are daily fed, and cleansed,
and sanctified in Thy Church, and are made
partakers of the One Supreme Divinity, grant
unto us Thine Holy Virtues, that filled
therewith we may draw near with a good
conscience unto Thine Holy Altar, so that
These Heavenly Mysteries may be made unto
us salvation and life; for Thou has said with
Thine Holy and Blessed Mouth: “The Bread
which I will give is My Flesh, for the Life of
the world. I am the Living Bread Which
came down from Heaven. If any man eat of
This Bread he shall liver for ever.” O Most
Sweet Bread, heal the palate of our hears,
that we may taste the sweetness of Thy love.
Heal them of all infirmities, that we may find
sweetness in nothing out of Thee. O Most
Pure Bread, having all delight and all savour,
which ever refreshest us, and never failest, let
our hearts feed on Thee, and may our inmost
soul be filled with the sweetness of Thy
savour. The Angels feed on Thee fully: let
pilgrim man feed on Thee after his measure,
so that, refreshed by this nourishment, he
may not faint by the way. O Holy Bread!
48
Living Bread! Fair Bread! Pure Bread! Who
didst come down from Heaven, and Who
givest life to the world, enter into our hearts
and cleanse us from all impurity of flesh and
spirit. Come into our souls; heal and cleanse
us within and without; be the protection and
continual health of our soul and body. Drive
far from us all foes that lie in wait; let them
flee afar off at the presence of Thy Power;
that, fortified by Thee without and within, we
may by a straight way arrive at Thy
Kingdom, where, not as now in Mysteries,
but face to face we shall behold Thee; when
Thou shall have delivered up the Kingdom to
God Thy Father, and shalt be God All in all.
Then shalt Thou satisfy us with Thyself by a
wondrous fullness, so that we shall never
hunger nor thirst any more for ever. Who
with the Same God the Father, and the Holy
Ghost, livest and reignest, now and ever, and
unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer of the Holy Hermit St. Alchfrith of

Lindisfarne
I beg Thee, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty
and Everlasting God, on account of Thy
Name and through Thine Holy Spirit the
Paraclete, do Thou stretch forth over me the
Right Hand of Thy Majesty, that Thine Help
and Merciful-Kindness I may be worthy to
have with me, and through the Most Holy
49
Mysteries of the Body and Blood of Christ
Thy Son, grant that I may be pardoned my
sins, and do Thou protect my body and my
soul from the temptations of the ancient
enemy and from the dangers of this world.
And do Thou guard my thoughts from the
evil proddings of the unclean spirits, they
who desist not to tempt in their haughtiness;
do Thou drive them away from me, favorable
in Thy Majesty, O Marvellous God, Who
livest and reignest unto the ages of ages.
Amen.

Prayer for the Reception of Holy

Communion from the Nunnaminster Prayer
Book
Jesus, Our Lord and God, Who Art to us the
Way, the Truth, and the Life, to Thee do we
pray that Thou wouldst make us partakers of
eternal happiness. Thou hast brought down
from heaven true life into the world. We
acknowledge Thee as That Bread of Life
Which strengthens the heart of man, for
whosoever shall come to Thee shall never
hunger, whosoever shall believe in Thee shall
not thirst for ever. They Flesh, O God
Omnipotent, is Verily Food, and Thy Blood,
O Jesus, is Drink to Thy faithful children. By
This Mystery Thou hast redeemed us from
death, O Lord, in order that we might live in
Thee with constancy and heedfulness. Deign,
50
therefore, we beseech Thee, to let us partake
in This Holy Mystery to the praise of Thy
Name. It is Thy Commandment, O Christ,
that we love one another; helped by This Thy
Gift, we are enabled to fulfill this law. Thus
is Thy Charity poured forth into our souls, till
at length love of others so springs up in our
hearts that no wicked heart, nor deep envy,
nor strong malice can remain in them. For the
Sake of Thine Holy Body, pardon the faults
we have committed through the frailty of our
flesh. O Christ, Who Alone Art All Pure, by
the Power of Thy Grace wash away every
spot from our minds, and every stain from
our souls. O God, Who Art the True Peace,
keep our souls undisturbed, we beseech Thee,
and our minds at rest in Thee; for where there
is peace Thou Thyself Art Present, and where
Thou Art all that is there is Thine. Come
therefore, O Lord, and take possession of us
for ever, and let us be the true temples of
Thine Holy Spirit. Glory be to Thee, O
Father, with Thine Only-Begotten Son,
Whom Thou hast bestowed upon us as Our
Life, and to the Holy Ghost, unto endless
ages; through the Grace of Jesus Christ Our
Lord, the Giver of all good gifts. Amen.

Another Prayer for the Reception of Holy

Communion from the Nunnaminster Prayer
Book
51
O Holy Saviour, Health of the dying, Most
Skilful Physician, Who dost furnish oil and
wine for the wounds of travellers in this
earthly life, O Christ, Who didst permit Thy
Side to be pierced by the Lance, open unto
me the Gate of Life, that I, entering therein,
may confess Thee as my Lord and my God.
Through the Healing Virtue of Thy Wounded
Side, in Thy Mercy cure the wounds of my
vices. Let me not on account of my sins incur
the guilt of being an unworthy partaker of
Thy Body and Blood. O Jesus Christ, my
Lord and my God, Who hast said: “He who
eats My Body and drinks My Blood, shall
abide in Me and I in him,” in Thine
Unspeakable Mercy so help me that I may
receive the fruit of this Thy Promise. Amen.

Prayer [Hymn] of St. Secundus [Sechnall]

of Ireland
Draw night and take the Body of the Lord,
and drink the Holy Blood for you outpoured.
Saved by That Body, hallowed by That
Blood, whereby refreshed we render thanks
to God. Salvation’s Giver, Christ the Only-
Son, by that His Cross and Blood the Victory
won. Offered was He for greatest and for
least, Himself the Victim and Himself the
Priest. Victims were offered by the Law of
old, that in a type Celestial Mysteries told.
He, Ransomer from death and Light from
52
shade, giveth His Holy Grace His Saints to
aid. Approach ye then with faithful hearts
sincere and take the safeguard of salvation
here. He that in this world rules His Saints
and shields, to all believers Life eternal
yields, with Heavenly Bread makes them that
hunger whole, gives living Waters to the
thirsty soul. Alpha and Omega, to Whom
shall bow all nations at the Doom, is with us
now. Amen.

Another Communion Prayer

O Lord Jesus Christ, Only-Begotten Son of
God, Who art and Who wast with the Father
and the Holy Ghost, God, in One Essence, in
Whom Alone there is true remission of all
sins, and by Whom life and eternal salvation
are bestowed, Who didst justify the publican
confessing his sins, and didst hear the humble
woman of Canaan as she cried to Thee, and
who didst look upon Peter when he denied
Thee, and didst accept him when he wept
bitterly, and didst grant forgiveness, as well
as the glory of Paradise, to the thief when he
confessed Thee: Upon me, a most vile and
wretched sinner, who confess my sins with
fear and trembling, do Thou bestow pardon
and forgiveness of mine evil deeds, that Thou
mayest grant the Communion of Thy Very
Most Holy Body and Blood to be for me not
53
a sentence of damnation, but for mine healing
and unceasing salvation. Who livest and
reignest with God the Father, in the unity of
the Holy Ghost, God, through all the ages of
ages. Amen.

Another Prayer
Grant, we beseech Thee, O Almighty God,
that Him Whom we behold mysteriously and
in the form of something else, so that we may
be nourished one earth by His Most Holy
Mysteries—Him we may be found worthy to
see, in heaven, face to face, as He is, in truth
and reality. Through the Same Our Lord
Jesus Christ Thy Son, Who liveth and
reigneth with Thee, in the unity of the Holy
Ghost, God, through all the ages of ages.
Amen.

I Cry: O God, have mercy . (Thrice)

Hail, O My Creator. Hail, O My

Redeemer. Hail, O My Saviour. I cry
to Thee with a contrite hear; have
mercy toward the great ingratitude
that I have had towards Thee.

Prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ

O the Sweetest Bridegroom of my
soul, Christ Jesus, sincerely desiring
to be with Thee in mind and will for
ever, and to permit nothing to be as
near to mine heart as Thee, Christ
Jesus, and that I may ever say to Thee
with glad rejoicing: ‘My Lord, My
God, My Sovereign Saviour, Christ
Jesus’; I earnestly beseech Thee to
receive me in Thy great mercy and
grace, for Thee I love with all mine
hear, with all my mind, and with all
my might, and nothing upon earth or
above the earth so much as Thee, My
Sweet Lord Jesus Christ. And
inasmuch as I have not loved Thee
and worshipped Thee above all things
61
as My Lord, My God, and Saviour
Christ Jesus, I beseech of Thee, with
meekness and a broken heart, mercy
and the forgiveness of my great
unkindness, and this for the great love
Thou didst pour out for me, and for
all mankind when Thou, O God and
Man, didst offer Thy Glorious Body
unto the Cross, there to be crucified
and wounded; for a sharp spear
having pierced Thy Glorious Side,
there came forth abundantly blood
and water, for my redemption and
salvation and that of all mankind.
And as I have the remembrance of
Thee thus steadfastly in mine hear, O
My Saviour, Christ Jesus, I do not
doubt but that Thou wilt be near me
and comfort me both bodily and
spiritually with Thy Glorious
Presence, and at the last wilt bring me
into Thine Everlasting Blessedness,
of which there shall be no end.
R. Amen.

Prayer to the Mother of God

62
O Most Dispassionate and Glorious
Mother of Our Lord, God and
Saviour Jesus Christ, compassionate
and Blessed Ever-Virgin Birthgiver of
God, Holy Mary, who didst become
worthy to bear the Creator of all
created things within thine all-holy
body, and didst give Birth to Him, by
the cooperation of the Holy Ghost,
remaining untouched and unsullied,
for the salvation of the whole race;
again Whose most True Body I, an
unworthy and wretched sinner, have
presumed to receive; I entreat thee
that thou wouldest deign to intercede
with Him, that for what sin soever I
have done in His service,
unknowingly or in any way, He, by
thy most holy deeds and prayers, and
those of all the Saints, would deign
mercifully to forgive me, and grant
me grace whereby I may be able to
live henceforth in greater amendment
and so complete the present life with
holy fear and heedfulness that after
the miseries of this unhappy life, I
63
may, upon the consummation of a
joyful victory, be counted worthy to
be brought unto the joys of eternal
happiness with them for whom I have
prayed, or shall pray, and with all the
people of God, both the living and the

Evening Prayers
+In the Name of the Father, and of the
Son, and of the Holy Ghost! (use Holy
Water)

Prayer of Confession
I Confess to God, to Bless Mary, to Holy
Father Benedict, and to all the Saints,
that I have sinned exceedingly in
thought, word, and deed, by my fault; I
pray Holy Mary, Holy Father Benedict,
and all the Saints, to pray for me.

Psalm 4
When I called upon Thee, O God of my
righteousness, Thou didst hearken unto
me; in mine affliction Thou hast enlarged
me. Have compassion on me and hear
my prayer. O ye sons of men, how long
will ye be slow of heart? Why do ye love
vanity, and seek after falsehood? Know
also that the Lord hath made wondrous
His holy one; the Lord will hearken unto
me when I cry unto Him. Be angry, and
sin not; feel compunction upon your beds
for what ye say in your hearts. Sacrifice a
sacrifice of righteousness, and hope in
65
Lord. Many say: Who will show unto us
good things? The Light of Thy
Countenance, O Lord, hath been signed
upon us; Thou hast given gladness to
mine heart. From the fruit of their wheat,
wine and oil are they multiplied.
In peace in the same place I shall lay me
down and sleep. For Thou, O Lord, alone
hast made me to dwell in hope. Glory
be….

Psalm 50. Have mercy upon me, O God,

according to Thy Great Mercy; and
according to the multitude of Thy
Compassions blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin. For I know
mine iniquity, and my sin is ever before
me. Against Thee only have I sinned and
done this evil before Thee, that Thou
mightest be justified in Thy words, and
prevail when Thou art judged. For
behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and
in sins did my mother bear me. For
behold, Thou hast loved truth; the hidden
and secret things of Thy Wisdom hast
Thou made manifest unto me. Thou shalt
sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be
66
made clean; Thou shalt wash me, and I
shall be made whiter than snow. Thou
shalt make me to hear joy and gladness;
the bones that be humbled, they shall
rejoice. Turn Thy Face away from my
sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and
renew a right spirit within me. Cast me
not away from Thy Presence, and take
not Thine Holy Spirit from me. Restore
unto me the joy of Thy salvation, and
with Thy Governing Spirit establish me. I
shall teach transgressors Thy ways, and
the ungodly shall turn back unto Thee.
Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O
God, Thou God of my salvation; my
tongue shall rejoice in Thy
Righteousness. O Lord, Thou shalt open
my lips, and my mouth shall declare Thy
Praise. For if Thou hadst desired
sacrifice, I had given it; with whole-burnt
offerings Thou shalt not be pleased. A
sacrifice unto God is a broken spirit; an
heart that is broken and humbled God
will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in
Thy good pleasure unto Sion; and let the
walls of Jerusalem be builded. Then
shalt Thou be pleased with a sacrifice of
67
righteousness, with oblation and whole-
burnt offerings. Then shall they offer
bullock upon Thine Altar.
Glory be…

Psalm 90
He that dwelleth in the help of the Most
High shall abide in the shelter of the God
of heaven. He shall say unto the Lord:
Tho art mine Helper and my Refuge. He
is my God, and I will hope in Him. For
He shall deliver thee from the snare of
the hunters and from every troubling
word. With His Shoulders will He
overshadow thee, and under His Wings
shalt thou have hope. With a shield will
His Truth encompass thee; thou shalt not
be afraid for the terror by night, nor for
the arrow that flieth by day. Nor for the
thing that walketh in darkness, nor for
the mishap and demon of noonday. A
thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten
thousand at thy right hand, but unto thee
shall it not come night. Only with thine
eyes shalt thou behold, and thou shalt see
the reward of sinner. For Thou, O Lord,
art mine Hope. Thou madest the Most
Hight thy refuge; No evils shall come
68
nigh thee, and no scourage shall draw
night unto they dwelling. For He shall
give His Angels charge over thee, to keep
thee in all thy ways. On their hands shall
they bear thee up, lest at any time thou
dash thy foot against a stone. Upon the
asp and basilisk shalt thou tread, and
thou shalt trample upon the lion and
dragon. For he hath set his hope on Me,
and I will deliver him; I will shelter him
because he hath known My Name. He
shall cry unto Me, and I will hearken
unto him. I am with him in affliction, and
I will rescue him and glorify him. With
length of days will I satisfy him, and I
will show him My Salvation.
Glory be….

Psalm 133
Behold now, bless ye the Lord, all ye
servants of the Lord. Ye that stand in the
House of the Lord, in the Courts of the
House of Our God, In the nights lift up
your hands unto the Holies, and bless the
Lord. The Lord bless thee out of Syon,
He That made Heaven and the Earth.
Glory be...

I believe that thou art the holy Angel
appointed by Almighty God protect me,
wherefore I entreat, and by Him Who
gave thee this rank, I humbly implore,
that thou wouldst at all times and in all
places guard me, the weak, unworthy,
and wretched sinner, throughout this life;

evils; and when God commandeth my
soul to pass from this place, suffer not
the demons to have any power to over it.
But receive it gently from my body, and
bring it with sweetness to the bosom of
Abraham, God our Creator and Saviour
bidding and helping thee. + He that is

Into Thine Hands, O Lord, and into the
hands of Thine Holy Ones, I commit this
night my spirit and body, my brothers
and sisters, my friends, my cousins, my

intercessions and prayers of the Blessed
Ever-Virgin Birthgiver of God, Mary,

the enemy’s snares, and from sudden
death and the torments of hell. Enkindle
mine heart with the Holy Ghost and with
Thine Holy Grace: and make me to be
more obedient to Thy Commandments,
and let me never be separated from Thee.

A Universal Prayer
O Loving Lord and God, ever ready
to listen to the prayers of Thy
servants, I most earnestly beseech
Thee to hearken to me. To Thee do I
pray, trusting to the help and merits of
the Blessed and Glorious Mary, Ever-
Virgin, and of all the Holy Angels,
Archangels, and Heavenly Powers, of
the Evangelists, Martyrs, and
Confessors, of the Virgins and
Monks, and of all the citizens of
heaven, that Thou wouldst increase
the Faith of Thine Holy Catholic
Church; beseeching Thee that Thou
wouldst give peace to our rulers; that
Thou wouldst forgive us our sins; that
Thou wouldst restore health to the
sick, and afford to the fallen the
means to repair the error of their
ways; that for those in captivity and
94
bondage, and for those who are
journeying in foreign countries, Thou
wouldst obtain freedom and help to
return to their native land; that Thy
faithful servants who are travellers on
sea or on land may have a prosperous
voyage, and at length reach an haven
of safety; that those who are in
trouble may find consolation, and
those who suffer oppression comfort
and relief; that Thou wilt in Thy Love
send Thine Holy Angel to be our
guide and protector here, and
wheresoever we may be; that Thou
wilt give the blessing of mutual
charity to those that are at variance,
and the true faith to the unbelieving;
and finally, that to the faithful
departed Thou wilt give eternal rest.
Amen.

A Daily Prayer for Help

O Lord God Almighty, King of
Eternal Glory, Who hast made the
Heavens and hast broken down the
95
gates of hell, restrain I beseech Thee,
the bold attacks of mine enemies,
save me from the malice of those who
hate me, so that their wickedness
prevail not against me. In Thy Love
for me, and through the intercession
of Thine elect, deign so to guide my
life that I may walk without offending
Thee or being scoffed at by men.
Open to me wide the Arms of Thy
Love, and show unto me the
multitude of Thy Mercy. Grant to me
length of days, and time for penance,
so that the prince of darkness may
have not power over my soul. Free
me, O Lord, from the hands of mine
enemies, visible and invisible, and
bring me into the Company of Thy
Saints, that I may praise and glorify
Thy Name. Amen.

I bless Thee, I glorify Thee, I adore

Thee, I thank Thee. May all Thy
creatures bless Thee, O my Lord.
May all Thine Angels and all Thy
Saints bless Thee. Thus will I bless
Thee all the days of my life. May
every fibre of my being adore Thee,
glorify Thee, bless Thee. Thou Art
my Salvation, my Life, my Light;
may mine eyes, which Thou hast
made and fashioned to contemplate
the Splendour of Thy Beauty, ever
bless Thee. Thou Art my Joy and my
Delight; may mine ears, which Thou
hast made and fashioned to hear Thy
Joyful Voice, ever bless Thee. Thou
Art my Sweetness and my
98
Refreshing; may my nostrils, which
Thou hast made and fashioned to live
and rejoice in the odour of Thine
Ointments, ever bless Thee. Thou Art
my glory, the Object of my new song
and of my rejoicing; may this tongue,
which Thou hast made and fashioned
to proclaim Thy Marvels, ever bless
and magnify Thee.

Thou Art the Source of my

knowledge, the Object of my
contemplation, the Foundation of my
prudence; may mine heart, which
Thou hast made and given me that I
might understand Thine
Unfathomable Mercies, ever adore
Thee, ever bless Thee. Thou Art my
Life and mine Happiness; may my
soul, which Thou hast created
according to Thine Own Likeness,
and hast infused into my body in
order that it might merit Thy Grace,
and the inestimable blessing of Glory
in Thy Kingdom; even though it be
sinful, may my soul ever bless Thee.
99
O Lord my God, my Beloved, I thirst
for Thee, I hunger for Thee, I desire
Thee, I long for Thee; with all the
powers of my body and with all the
yearnings of my soul I strive after
Thee. As a mother will sit weeping at
the tomb of an only son, so I , not as
much as I desire, but as much as I
can, sit weeping, as I think of Thy
Passion, as I think of Thy buffetings,
as I think of Thy stripes, as I think of
Thy Cross and of Thy Wounds, how
Thou didst die for me, and of how
and where Thou wast Buried. With
Mary I sit weeping at the Tomb—the
tomb that is my mind—where faith
has buried Thee, where hope seeks to
find Thee, and charity to anoint Thee.
O Most Beloved, Most Beautiful,
Most Sweet Jesus, Who will give me
that I may find Thee, and be able to
kiss and wash with my tears the place
of Thy Wounds and the Marks of the
nails? O ye daughters of Jerusalem,
tell my Beloved that I languish with
100
love! Let Him come to me, show
Himself to me, call me by my name,
and so help to allay my sorrow; for
my grief will remain as long as He is
absent from me. Wherefore, O God,
All-Powerful, All-Loving, All-
Merciful, I beseech Thee to be ever
present with me and with all those
who believe in Thee and labour for
Thine Holy Love; grant that we may
persevere in doing good.

Give, O Lord, King Eternal, to virgins

chastity, to those dedicated to God
continence, to the married sanctity of
life, to the penitent pardon, to widows
and orphans support, to the poor
protection, to pilgrims a safe return,
to those in sorrow consolation, to the
departed souls rest, that rest which is
eternal; to those that are leading a
good life give help ever to persevere
in uprightness; to those that are good,
grace to become better; to those that
do ill, and to the negligent, strength to
quick amend.
101
O Lord Jesus Christ, I know myself to
be a sinner, more than others and
before all; but Most Merciful and
Almighty God, Who hast pity on all
sinners, suffer me not to be a stranger
to Thy Mercies. Rather do Thou, O
Lord, King of kings, Who settest the
way of life and appointest the means
of correction, give unto me the spirit
of my calling.

Create in me a mind that seeks Thee,

that desires Thee, that loves Thee
above all else, Who Art everywhere,
Three Persons in One God, Make me
to fear Thee, and to do Thy Will.

Earnestly therefore I beg Thee, Lord

God Almighty, Who Art Blessed and
Glorious through all ages, that Thou
wilt deign to grant Thy Mercy unto
all those who are commemorated in
my prayers, and to those who have
commended themselves to me, as also
to those to whom I am bound by any
102
duty of charity or claim of affection.
Aid those who are my neighbours or
relations, whether living or dead, that
they may not perish for ever. Grant,
therefore, to all Christians who are
living Thine Help, and the dead
pardon and everlasting rest.

Also, and this I most earnestly beg of

Thee, O Lord, Who Art the Alpha and
the Omega, that when my day shall
come Thou wilt show Thyself a Just
Judge against the malice of mine
accuser, the devil, that Thou wilt be
my constant defender against the
snares of the old enemy of man, and
that Thou wilt bring me into the
Company of the Angels and Saints, in
Thine Holy Paradise, to enjoy Thine
Happiness for all eternity, for Thou
Art God, blessed for ever. Amen.

A Prayer Against Temptation

Spare, O Lord, spare me, a sinner,
and although everlasting punishment
103
is my due, for that I am so constantly
offending Thee, grant, I beseech
Thee, that what I deserve as a
punishment may become the means
of correction, and that I may confess
it to be the effect of Thy Mercy Alone
that the temptations of the devil,
which so often have prevailed over
me because of my sins, now no
longer assault me.

A Prayer for Relations and

Friends
O Omnipotent and Everlasting God,
Who Art Mercy Inestimable, receive
our prayers offered for the salvation
of Thy servants N and N. In Thy
Kindness grant that, as in Thy Love
Thou hast created them for eternity,
so Thou wilt cleanse them from all
stains of sin, and in pity wilt pardon
their offences, that by Thine Help
they may deserve to attain to the
fulness of eternal salvation.

Prayer for Help in the Hour of

Death
O Jesus, Most Loving Lord, be Thou
with me when the dread hour of death
shall come upon me.

106
May those Saints to whose patronage
I trust be present with me when the
dread hour of death shall come upon
me.

Give me to find the Help of Thy

Grace when the dread hour of death
shall come upon me.

Grant, O Jesus, that I may deserve to

join in singing this heavenly hymn to
Thee when the dread hour of death
shall come upon me.

And may I then have grace to say: To

Thee, my God, be praise, glory, and
all honour: To Thee be renown,
power, and majesty, through endless
ages dread for ever.

Short Prayers on Our Lord’s

Passion
Thou Who didst come on Earth to
Suffer for us: O Lord, have mercy
upon us.
107
Christ Our Lord was made obedient
unto death, even unto the death of the
Cross.
Thou Who in prophecy hast said: “O
death, I will be thy death,” O Lord,
have mercy upon us.

Thou Who hast drawn all ages to

Thine Arms outstretched on the
Cross: O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Thou Who Art the Life, and by dying

on the Cross didst despoil both death
and hell: O Lord, have mercy upon
us.

Christ Our Lord was made obedient

unto death, even unto the death of the
Cross.

Prayer on the Passion of Our

Lord
O God, Who to redeem the world
didst will to be betrayed by the kiss of
108
Judas, to be bound in bonds, and as
an Innocent Lamb to be led to the
slaughter; to be accused by false
witnesses, to suffer stripes, and to be
scoffed at; to be spat upon, buffeted,
and crowned with thorns; to be raised
upon the Cross, pierced with nails,
and wounded with the lance; to be
offered vinegar and gall, to be
accounted amongst thieves: Do Thou,
by these Thy Most Holy Sufferings
undergone for men, deliver me from
the pains of hell. Save and keep me,
by Thine Holy Cross, and lead me,
wretched sinner that I am, to the place
whither Thou hast brought the
penitent thief. To Thee with the
Father and the Holy Ghost, be
Honour, Power, and Glory, unto the
ages of ages. Amen.

109
Seven Petitions to the Holy
Cross
Lord Jesus Christ, for the sake of
Thine Holy Cross, be with me to
shield me. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, by the memory of

Thy Blessed Cross, be within me to
strengthen me. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, for Thine Holy

Cross, be ever round about me to
protect me. Amen.

110
Lord Jesus Christ, for Thy Glorious
Cross, go before me to direct my
steps. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, for Thine Adorable

Cross, come Thou after me to guard
me. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, for Thy Cross,

worthy of all praise, overshadow me
to bless me. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, for Thy Noble

Cross, be Thou in me to lead me to
Thy Kingdom. Amen.

A Prayer before Our Lord on

the Cross
By the Power and Glory of Thine
Holy Cross, with which I bless +
myself, save me, O Lord Jesus; turn
aside from me the poisonous darts of
the enemy; destroy in me carnal lust;
quicken me with the Gifts of Thy
Grace; shelter me under the shadow
111
of Thy Wings. By this Same Sign of
Thine Holy Cross, deliver me, O
Lord, from daily perils, disease, and
death. Should sorrow or sickness
overtake me for my sins, soothe my
grief and allay my pain as Thou
willest, and as Thou best knowest
how. Grant that, protected in Thee
and by Thee, I may never be
delivered into the hands of mine
enemies, visible or invisible; but
rather in mercy than in anger do Thou
chastise me, Good Jesus; and
whenever I shall stray from Thee do
Thou call me back again, and ever
guard me in Thy Loving-Kindness to
Thy Glory. May Thy Name be
blessed for ever. Amen.

Twelve Prayers on Our Lord’s

Sufferings

The Passion
O Only-Begotten Son of God, Who
Art ever to me an Impregnable
112
Protection, my Guard that never
sleeps, my Defence that never fails: O
Christ, Who in Heaven Art the Stay
of the Angels, be now and for ever
my Propitiator with the Father. O
Mediator between God and man, I
beseech Thee, through Thy Passion
and the Redemption of Thy Life-
Giving Cross, that when Thou shalt
please to call me from this world,
Thou wilt send the Angel of Peace to
guard my soul and conduct it to the
place of rest ,and enable it to pass
unscathed through the ranks of rest,
and enable it to pass unscathed
through the ranks of the rulers and
powers of darkness. And, O Jesus
Christ, my Lord, may all who in that
hour pray and plead for me find the
ears open to their cries.

Our Lord’s Ears have to listen to

blasphemies
O King of kings, and Lord of lords,
for my sake, who am but a lowly
sinner, Thou didst allow Thine Ears,
113
Which never hearkened to aught
against the inward Will of the Father,
to fail in death. Grant Thy Merciful
Pardon to one whose ears have been
so deeply polluted by a wilful
listening to evil. O may it not be my
lot in the hour of the Coming
Judgment to hear that sentence I have
truly deserved: “Depart from Me, ye
cursed, into everlasting fire.” O Jesus
Christ my Lord, by the intense ardour
of Thy Love, let me not be separated
from Thee for ever. Amen.

Pilate’s Condemnation
O Most Judge Judge of all men, Jesus
Christ my Lord, Who Thyself placed
before a human judge didst receive
unjust condemnation, grant that I may
never be compelled to hear from Thy
Loving Lips the terrible sentence of
everlasting doom.

The Crowning with Thorns

O God, my Most Merciful Protector
and Guardian, Who didst not refuse to
114
wear a Crown of Thorns upon Thy
Sacred Head, pardon me whatsoever
sins I have committed by my senses.
Without Thy Protection, I am ever
being pierced by the dense thorns of
all my vicious habits. O Christ, on the
Throne of Thy Might, Thou Art
Crowned for all ages with Glory,
Honour, and Eternal Majesty. O Jesus
Christ my Lord, I confess that Thou
Art the Only-Begotten Son of the
Unbegotten Father, and, with the
Holy Ghost, dost exist in the One
Substance of the Triune Godhead.

Our Lord carrying His Cross

O Lord, Who Art Exalted in Thine
Humility, and Alone in Thine Holy
Charity: O Lord, the Unspotted
Lamb, Who didst not refuse, in
carrying Thy Cross, to take upon Thy
Shoulders the heavy burden of the
sins of all men, reach forth Thy
Loving Hand even to me, who am
entangled in my many sins. Thou dost
not will the death of the sinner, but
115
that he should be converted and live,
so do Thou break the bonds of my
sins, and raise me up. I, indeed, have
done nothing in Thy Sight to deserve
Thy Mercy: still, Jesus Christ my
Lord, I humbly beg Thy Majesty that
Thou, Who Art my God, wouldst blot
out my offences, which are without
number. Amen.

Our Lord is stripped of His

Garments
O Jesus Christ, my Lord and my God,
the Heavenly Way, the Truth, and the
Life, by Thee the Gates of the
Kingdom are opened to us. Clothe in
all virtue, Thou didst allow Thine
Holy and Immaculate Body to be
exposed to ignominy, and to be raised
aloft upon the Cross by the polluted
hands of wicked sinners. Do Thou
remove from me the veil of my
vicious habits, and clothe me with all
virtue. O Jesus Christ my Lord, Who
didst not abandon the strayed sheep,
but, when found, lifted it in Thine
116
Arms and carried it Thyself to the
Flock, do Thou raise me from Earth
to Heaven.

Our Lord fastened to the Cross

O Author of Charity, Model of
Chastity, and Lover of Men: O Christ,
our Most Merciful God, Who ddist
stretch forth Thine Arms upon the
Cross, that Thine Hands might be
pierced by the nails, do Thou reach
out to me the hand of Thy Mercy,
piece mine heart with the sharp darts
of fear and awe, of love and trust in
Thee. O Jesus Christ my Lord, do
Thou, Who didst allow Thine
Innocent Hands to be fastened to the
Wood of the Cross, heal mine heart
from every wound, and cleanse mine
hands from every stain of vice. Amen.

117
Our Lord is offered Vinegar and
Gall
O Good Master, my God, God of
armies, God of all the Earth, Who,
tasting the bitterness of the offered
vinegar and gall, didst refuse it, I
honour Thee because Thou hast
opened to all the way of life and
truth, and offered to them the joys of
eternal life. Grant that I, poor sinner
though I be, may with the rest of men
escape the bitterness of eternal death.
Hear me, hearken to my prayers,
listen to my supplications, O Eternal
God. Jesus Christ my Lord, in Thy
Great Mercy, and not for any merit of
mine, pardon mine offences against
Thee when my lips have sinned by
blasphemies, oaths, falsehoods, or
idle talk.

Our Lord’s Eyes close in Death

O Prince of Peace, Teacher of
Patience, and Model of True
Humility, Who, bowing Thine Head
on the Cross, didst give up Thy Most
118
Blessed Spirit, pardon me for all my
pride and vainglory. O Jesus Christ
my Lord, Who, as a proof of Thine
entire obedience, when offering
Thyself to the Father for the salvation
of the world, didst close Thine Eyes
in death, by Thy Most True Love for
me, I pray Thee that, in honour of
those Sacred Eyes, Thou wouldst
lovingly pardon whatever stain my
soul has suffered by the wrong use of
my sense of sight. Amen.

The Wounds in Our Lord’s Side

O Holy Saviour, Health of the dying,
Most Skilful Physician, Who dost
furnish oil and wine for the wounds
of travellers in this earthly life, O
Christ, Who didst permit Thy Side to
be pierced by the lance, open unto me
the Gate of Life, that I, entering
therein, may confess Thee as my Lord
and my God. Through the healing
virtue of Thy Wounded Side, in Thy
Mercy cure the wounds of my vices.
Let me not on account of my sins
119
incur the guilt of being an unworthy
partaker of Thy Body and Blood. O
Jesus Christ, my Lord and my God,
Who hast said: “He Who eats My
Body and drinks My Blood, shall
abide in Me and I in him,” in Thine
Uspeakable Mercy so help me that I
may receive the fruit of this Thy
Promise.

Our Lord in the Tomb

True Giver of Everlasting Life and
Bestower of Perpetual Light; Buried
in the Tomb, Thou didst will to dispel
the darkness of Hell and of Earth. By
the memory of Thy Sacred Body,
Which rested Incorrupt in the grave,
grant that after my death, my soul,
though most unworthy, may not be
found in the prison of Hell. Against
Thee Alone, as the Innocent One, the
brazen gates of Hell, have not
prevailed; Thou hast broken the iron
bars which fastened them, hast set at
liberty the captives, and hast led
120
captivity captive. Do Thou then, Jesus
Christ, my Lord and my God, save
me from the hands of mine enemies,
and bring me into the Holy Place
Thine Hands have prepared for me.

Our Lord’s Resurrection

O Christ, Thou Art the Life of the
dying, the Health of the sick, the
Only Hope of those in misery, and the
Resurrection of all that are dead. O
Jesus Christ my Lord, Who on the
Third Day didst break the bonds of
death and Rise Free and Glorious
from the grave, do Thou grant to me,
though I am unworthy, a portion in
the first resurrection by remitting my
sins, and in the second resurrection a
place for ever with Thy Saints. Amen.

Prayer on the Resurrection

O Lord Jesus Christ, Hope of the
sorrowful; Health of the sick; Life of
the dying; Resurrection of the dead!
Rendering Thee my thanks, I beseech
121
Thee, O Most High God, that Thou
Who, breaking the bonds of death,
didst rise from the grave in power and
in joy, wouldst grant me, wretched
mortal that I am, a share in the first
resurrection by forgiving my sins, and
in the second resurrection by
bestowing on me a never-ending life
with Thy Saints in Heaven. Amen.

Prayer to God and His Saints

O Almighty and Holy Trinity, One
God, Whom I adore, Whom I love,
Whom I confess, hear mine humble
prayer; enter into mine heart and blot
out my numberless sins. And,
because I have nothing good upon
which I may rely, first and before all
things do thou intercede for me, O
Holy Mary, Ever-Virgin, that I may
deserve to be heard and find eternal
salvation. Come to mine assistance
also, O thou most honoured Prince of
the Angels, Saint Michael, with all
the host of heavenly powers. And
122
thou, Abraham, too, Patriarch beloved
of God, Who as a similitude of the
Father didst offer thy son Isaac to
Him, for which thing in thee all the
nations of the Earth are blessed,
mayest thou and may all the other
patriarchs pray that I may daily offer
my soul to Christ. Be at my side also,
O David, Prophet, King, and
Psalmist, who even as a boy didst
overthrow the giant Goliath with a
stone. Do thou, with all the other holy
prophets, drive far from me the
everlasting foe. O glorious Saint
Peter, Prince of the Apostles, by the
memory of thine high glory, do thou
with the other Apostles, those lights
of this Earth, who seated upon the
Twelve Thrones will judge the world,
do you help me, that in the judgment
day my lot may not be found with the
wicked. May the choir of Holy
Innocents, slain for the Infant Jesus,
intercede beneath the Throne of the
Lamb of God for me. O thou glorious
and illustrious through every age,
123
Saint Stephen, and you, all ye
crimsoned ranks of martyrs, by your
intercession help to wash me from
every stain of sin.

Prayers to Our Lady

I. O Mary, Holy and Immaculate,
Virgin Mother of God! Thou art the
most merciful and most loving
Mother of my Lord: Thou art most
glorious and exalted above the stars
of heaven, for thou alone, without any
equal, hast found favour with Christ,
and, coming to the aid of a fallen
world, hast brought to it salvation.
Unspotted and most worthy Virgin of
virgins; most powerful of all
creatures; Lady exalted above all
women; to thee nothing is difficult to
obtain from God: come to mine aid,
who am a wretched sinner, full of sins
and a man of many iniquities. O thou,
who didst Bring Forth the Lamb That
taketh away the sins of the world,
124
come, I beseech thee, to mine aid,
unworthy and sinful though I am. I
acknowledge mine iniquity, I know
mine offences, I confess my sins, I
proclaim mine unworthiness, I see my
soul stained with all pollution. But, O
Virgin Mary, who art incomparable in
thy love, do thou by thine holy
prayers soften and turn aside the just
wrath of the Lord my God.

II. O Holy Mother of Christ Our God,

extend thine help to those who in
sorrow fly to thee for aid; assist and
cherish all who trust in thee; pray for
thy clients in this world; plead in
behalf of the clergy, intercede for
monks, entreat for women, O Mary,
Mother of God.

III. O Holy and Unspotted Virgin

Mary, the solace and life of the
faithful: from thee the Author of our
salvation willed to take Flesh; with
deep-drawn sights I beg thine help
and plead for thy devoted
125
intervention with thine own Son in
my behalf. I am but a wretched and
ungrateful sinner, but through thee,
whatsoever is amiss in my life, or
hurtful to my soul’s health, may He
blot out and correct; whatever is
useful and profitable, may He plant
and strengthen. Let not the cunning
enemy of the human race rejoice at
my ruin, but, driven away by thine
help, let him bewail his lot. May thy
perpetual intercession so obtain for
me the Grace of Christ that I may
keep my soul and my body unspotted,
humble and gentle, and strengthened
by the noble gifts of faith, hope, and
charity; I may so obey all Christ’s
commands, that when my last day
shall come, I may deserve to be
admitted into the number of thy
clients among the blessed spirits in
heaven, if thou interceded for me,
who art the Sweet Queen of Heaven
and Earth, and Grace comes from thy
Son, Who, with the Co-Eternal Father
and the Holy Ghost, livest and
126
reignest, One God Almighty, for
endless ages. Amen.

Prayer to St. Peter the Apostle

O Blessed Peter, head and chief of the
Apostles, thou art the guardian of the
keys of the heavenly kingdom, and
against thee the powers of hell do not
prevail; thou art the rock of the
Church and the shepherd of Christ’s
flock; thou art great in power,
wonderful in thine heavenly bless;
thou hast the right of binding and
loosing in heaven and on earth. The
sea supported thy footsteps, the sick
upon whom even thy shadow fell
were cured of their ills. By the
memory of That Right Hand Which
supported thee on the waves of the
sea, lift me from the ocean of my
sins, and by those tears which thou
didst shed for thy Lord, break the
bonds of mine offences and free me
from the hand of all mine adversaries.
Help even me, O good shepherd, that
I may in this life serve Christ Jesus
127
and thee, that with thine help, after
the close of a good life, I may deserve
to attain to the reward of eternal
happiness in heaven, where thou art
unto endless ages the guardian of the
gates, and the shepherd of the flock.
Amen.

Prayer to St. Gregory the Great

O Holy Gregory, confessor and priest
of the Lord, I pray thee that thou
wouldst intercede with Our Lord God
for me, that, being purified from all
vice, I may please Him in all things,
and that He will grant me the peace
possessed by all His servants. Amen.

Prayers to Obtain the Help of

the Saints
I. Assist me, I pray, all ye Saints of
God to whose protection I fly, assist
me before death lays its hand on me;
before the wrath of God strikes me,
before the grave closes over me. O
128
Holy Mary, Virgin Mother of Christ
the Son of God, hear me, succour me,
protect me: obtain for me true faith,
perfect charity, humility, chastity, and
self-control. Do thou, O Holy
Michael, with all the army of Angels,
pray for me. Snatch me from the
power of mine adversaries: help me
to love my God, to possess purity of
heart and a strong faith. O Holy
Patriarchs and Prophets, do you too
assist me to obtain the gifts of
kindness to others, patience,
constancy, and holy perseverance. O
ye Blessed Apostles, free me from my
bondage, defend me in peril,
strengthen me in the hour of trial, and
bring me at length into the kingdom
of life. May holy charity and true
peace, may purity of soul and body,
be granted to me through your
intercession, O Holy Martyrs. O
Glorious Confessors of God, pray for
me: through your merits and help
may I obtain a yearning after
heavenly things, may I possess a love
129
for uprightness of life, may I ever
strive to keep the commandments of
God. O all ye Holy Virgins, to you do
I turn, help me to have good dwell to
all, obtain for me health of soul and
body, brotherly love, prudence, and
the spirit of justice, fortitude, and
temperance. Again and again, yea
always, will I turn to you, O all ye
holy ones: come to mine aid: take
pity on me; raise me up when I fall;
correct me when I err. Through your
intercession may I be granted a pure
conscience a salutary sorrow, an
upright life, and an ending precious in
God’s Sight; that through you I may
come to the Company of the Blessed
through the Mercy of Him Who
reigns, One God and Three Persons,
unto the ages of ages. Amen.

II. O all ye Saints, in God’s Name I

pray and beseech you to remember
me in your prayers, that mine enemy
and adversary may never be able to
harm me. O Lord, I have sinned
130
before Thee and Thine Angels. Shew
me, Lord, Thy Mercy. Heal me and I
shall be healed, for Thou, O Lord, Art
my Saviour; let my prayer come to
Thine Holy Temple. To Thee, O Lord,
be honour and power unto endless
ages. Amen.

Additional Prayers
I. I adore Thee, O God, Father, Son,
and Holy Ghost, One in Divinity,
Equal in Glory, Co-Eternal in
Majesty. Thou Art the True and Only
God, and there is none other God but
Thee. Thou Art to be adored and
worshipped, to be feared and
reverenced, as Three Persons and as
One God. Thou Art the Same Mighty
Lord and Omnipotent God Who
Alone knowest the faith and
conscience of all men.

II. O Lord God Almighty, Thou Who

in Perfect Trinity livest and having
Lordship reignest, be Thou lenient
131
unto my soul, be Thou forgiving to
my evils, be Thou sparing to my sins
and crimes, be Thou forbearing to my
deeds; visit infirmity, cure sickness,
heal illness. Do Thou give the hear
which may fear Thee, sense which
may understand Thee. Deliver Thou
deliver me from the power of the
adversaries, and do Thou not permit
me to be tempted above that which I
am able to withstand.

III. O God, be merciful to me a

sinner; to me a sinner, who for the
very number of mine offences am not
worthy to raise mine eyes to heaven,
nor to look up to Thee, O God, Father
Almighty.

IV. And, O Most Merciful God the

Son, our Maker and our Redeemer,
Co-Eternal and Co-Equal with the
Father and the Holy Ghost, Who
camest into this world to save sinners,
do Thou take pity on me, who am a
sinner, weighed down under the
132
burden of all mine offences and evil
habits.

V. O God of mercy, take Thou from

me all mine offences, past, present,
and future; send down from Heaven
Thine Holy Helping Spirit, so that
mine iniquity and my sin may not
master me, but that I may have
strength to do the penance which is
pleasing to Thee, and may thus
deserve to obtain Thy Mercy.

VI. O God, Who Alone Art all Wise,

Thou knowest what is best for me a
sinner; do with me what seems good
in the Eyes of Thy Majesty.

VII. O Loving Father and Merciful

God, receive the supplications of Thy
servant; and may the prayers which I,
a wretched sinner, offer now in Thy
Sight rise up into the Ears of Thy
Mercy. Amen.

VIII. Free me, O Lord, from the
snare of death and the delight of
carnal things. I beg you, all ye Holy
Apostles, intercede ye for me, both ye
Martyrs and Confessors, intercede ye
for me, the Nine Orders of Angels,
intercede ye for me, all ye Saints, and
whosoever hath the Grace of God,
that I may merit to arrive unharmed at
the gate of salvation, and that I may
merit to take hold of eternal life.

IX. Forgive me, I beg, O Lord, in the

bowels of Thy Mercy; humility,
goodness, modesty, gentleness,
continence, abstinence, temperance,
chastity, patience, endurance,
forgiveness, mercy and piety,
harmony and peace, and above these
things, however, do Thou grant to me
holy charity, O Lord. Thou Who
livest and reignest, God, unto the ages
of ages. Amen.

134
Prayer to God the Father
O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and
Merciful God, Thou Who didst Beget
the Son before all time, Co-Equal,
Co-Eternal, and Consubstantial to
Thee, also with the Holy Ghost
Eternally Proceeding from Thee
Alone, Thou Who didst create heaven
and earth, the sea and all things in
them, visible and invisible. I praise
Thee, I adore Thee, and I glorify
Thee. Do Thou look, I beg,
mercifully upon me a wretched
sinner, and despise not the work of
Thine Hands, but through Thine
Ineffable Goodness do Thou save and
help me, on account of Thine Holy
Name. Through the Same Our Lord
Jesus Christ, Who with Thee the Co-
Eternal Father, in the Unity of the
Same Holy Ghost, livest and reignest,
God, through all the ages of ages.
Amen.

135
Prayers to God the Son
O Lord Jesus Christ, King of virgins,
Lover of chastity, do Thou defend
mine heart from all darts and snares
of the enemy, and do Thou extinguish
in me every conflagration of lust. Do
Thou grant to me, a sinner, true
humility and the tranquility of
patience. Do Thou inflame my mind
with the sting of Thy Love, that,
holding every way of iniquity with
hatred, I may be able to please Thee
all the days of my life. Thou Who
with the Father and the Holy Ghost,
livest and reignest, God, through all
the ages of ages. Amen.

O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the

Living God, the True Light, Thou
Who enlightenest all men coming
into the world, do Thou enlighten the
blindness of mine heart, and do Thou
enkindle in me the fire of Thy Love,
and do Thou grant to me right faith,
certain hope, perfect love, and the
other virtues, through which may I
136
understand to fear Thee and to love
Thee, and to serve Thy
Commandments. And when to me the
last days and the end of life shall have
arrived, may the angels of peace
receive me, and rescue me from the
power of the devil, and may I obtain
to enjoy the fellowship of Thy Saints
in blessed rest, and to be placed at
Thine Right Hand. Do Thou grant this
to me, O Son of the Living God,
Thou Who didst say, “Ask, and it
shall be given you.”(Mat. 7:7) Thou
Who with the Father and the Holy
Ghost, livest and reignest, God,
through all the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer to God the Holy Ghost

O Lord, Holy Ghost, Almighty and
Merciful God, Thou Who Art Co-
Equal, Co-Eternal, and
Consubstantial to the Father and the
Son, Ineffably Thou dost Eternally
Proceed Alone from the Father, Thou
Who didst descend upon the Same
137
Our Lord Jesus Christ in the form of a
Dove, and upon the Holy Apostles in
the Tongues o Fire; Thee I praise,
Thee I adore, and Thee I glorify. Do
Thou dispel from me, I beg, all the
shadows of iniquity, ingratitude, and
negligence; and do Thou enkindle in
me the Light of Thine Holy Mercy
and the fire of Thy Most Holy Fear
and Most Sweet Love. Thou Who
with Same God the Co-Eternal Father
and His Son Our Lord, livest and
reignest, One God, through all the
ages of ages. Amen.

Devotions to the Holy
Cross
Before the Crucifix pray these prayers:

O Almighty and Most Loved God, O

Most Holy and Most Loving Father, I
earnestly beg Thee through Thine
Only-Begotten Son, Our Lord, and
through the Sign of Thine Healing
Cross, that Thou might never hand
me over unto the power of the
enemies and adversaries, nor here nor
in the future world, but do Thou grant
Thine Holy Spirit, as well as Thy
Grace, Defense, Mercy, Love, and
Help to be with me in all hours, and
mayest Thou inscribe my name in the
Book of Life, that it may never at any
time be removed by omission, but to
be preserved to perpetual memory,
through Thee Himself, Our Lord
Jesus Christ, for To Thee be Honour,
Power, and Empire, through all the
ages of ages. Amen.

139
O Lord Jesus Christ, Thou Who didst
reach out Thine Hand on the Cross,
and didst redeem us by Thine Holy
Blood, forgive me a wretched sinner,
for all my sins are not hidden from
Thee. I beg for pardon, I believe for
forgiveness, I hope for grace. Thou,
Who Art Loving, O Lord, have mercy
upon me. I invoke the Father, and the
Son, and the Holy Ghost, that the
Sign of the Cross of Christ may be
upon me, that it may defend me from
all evil deeds. May the Seal of the
Holy Cross be upon me by day and
by night. Amen.

Seven Penitential
Psalms
Psalm 6. O Lord, rebuke me not in
Thine anger : nor chasten me in Thy
wrath.
Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am
weak : heal me, O Lord, for my bones
are troubled.
And my soul is troubled greatly : but
Thou, O Lord, how long?
Turn to me again, O Lord, deliver my
soul : save me for Thy Mercy’s Sake.
For in death there is none that is
mindful of Thee : and in Hades who
will confess Thee?
I toiled in my groaning : every night I
will wash my bed; with tears will I
water my couch.
Through wrath is mine eye become
troubled : I have grown old among all
mine enemies.
Depart from me, all ye that work
vanity : for the Lord hath heard the
voice of my weeping.

141
The Lord hath heard my
supplication : the Lord hath received
my prayer.
Let all mine enemies be greatly put to
shame and be troubled : let them be
turned back, and speedily be greatly
put to shame.
Glory be to the Father, and to the
Son : and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, both now
and ever : and unto the ages of ages.
Amen.

Psalm 31. Blessed are they whose

iniquities are forgiven; and whose
sins are covered.
Blessed is the man unto whom the
Lord imputeth not sin; and in whose
mouth there is no guile.
Because I kept silence, my bones are
waxed old; through my crying all the
day long.
For day and night Thine Hand was
heavy upon me; I was reduced to
misery whilst the thorn stuck fast in
me.
142
Mine iniquity have I acknowledged;
and my sin have I not hid.
I said: I will confess mine iniquities
before the Lord against myself; and
Thou forgavests the ungodliness of
mine heart.
For this shall everyone that is holy
pray unto Thee; in a seasonable time.
Moreover, in a flood of many waters;
shall they not come night unto him.
Thou Art mine Refuge from the
affliction which surroundeth me; O
mine Rejoicing, deliver me from
them which have encircled me.
I will instruct thee and teach thee in
this way which thou shalt go; I will
fix Mine Eyes upon thee.
Be ye not as the horse or as the mule;
which have no understanding.
Whose jaws thou must hold with bit
and bridle; lest they come nigh unto
thee.
Many are the scourges of the sinner;
but Mercy shall encircle him that
hopeth in the Lord.

143
Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye
righteous; and glory, all ye that are
upright of heart.
Glory be to the Father, and to the
Son : and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, both now
and ever : and unto the ages of ages.
Amen.

Psalm 37. O Lord, rebuke me not in

Thin Anger; nor chasten me in Thine
Wrath.
For Thine Arrows are fastened in me;
and Thou hast laid Thine Hand
heavily upon me.
There is no healing in my flesh in the
Face of Thine Wrath; and there is no
peace in my bones in the face of my
sins.
For mine iniquities are risen higher
than mine head; as a heavy burden
have they pressed heavily upon me.
My bruises are become noisome and
corrupt; in the face of my folly.

144
I have been wretched and utterly
bowed down until the end; all the day
long I went with downcast face.
For my loins are filled with
mockings; and there is no healing in
my flesh.
I am afflicted and humbled
exceedingly; I have roared from the
groaning of mine heart.
O Lord, before Thee is all my desire;
and my groaning is not hid from
Thee.
Mine heart is troubled, my strength
hath failed me; and the light of mine
eyes, even this is not with me.
My friends and my neighbours; drew
nigh over against me and stood.
And my nearest of kin stood afar off;
and they that sought after my soul
used violence.
And they that sought evils for me
spake vain things; and craftiness all
the day long did they meditate.
But as for me, like a deaf man I heard
them not; and was as a speechless
man that openeth not his mouth.
145
And I became as a man that heareth
not; and that hath in his mouth no
reproofs.
For in Thee have I hoped, O Lord;
Thou wilt hearken unto me, O Lord
my God.
For I said: Let never mine enemies
rejoice over me; yea, when my feet
were shaken, those men spake
boastful words against me.
For I am ready for scourges; and my
sorrow is continually before me.
For I will declare mine iniquity; and I
will take heed concerning my sin.
But mine enemies live and are made
stronger than I; and they that hated
me unjustly are multiplied.
They that render me evil for good
slandered me; because I pursued
goodness.
Forsake me not, O Lord; my God,
depart not from me.
Be attentive unto mine help;
O Lord of my salvation.
Glory be to the Father, and to the
Son : and to the Holy Ghost.
146
As it was in the beginning, both now
and ever : and unto the ages of ages.
Amen.

Psalm 50. Have mercy on me, O

God; according to Thy Great Mercy.
And according to the multitude of
Thy Compassions; blot out my
transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from mine
iniquity; and cleanse me from my
sins.
For I know mine iniquity; and my sin
is ever before me.
Against Thee only have I sinned and
done this evil before Thee; that Thou
mightest be justified in Thy words,
and prevail when Thou art judged.
For behold, I was conceived in
iniquities; and in sins did my mother
bear me.
For behold, Thou hast loved truth; the
hidden and secret things of Thy
Wisdom hast Thou made manifest
unto me.

147
Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop,
and I shall be made clean; Thou shalt
wash me, and I shall be made whiter
than snow.
Thou shalt make me to hear joy and
gladness; the bones that be humbled,
they shall rejoice.
Turn Thy Face away from my sins;
and blot out all mine iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God;
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from Thy Presence;
and take not Thine Holy Spirit from
me.
Restore unto me the joy of Thy
salvation; and with Thy Governing
Spirit establish me.
I shall teach transgressors Thy ways;
and the ungodly shall turn back unto
Thee.
Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O
God, Thou God of my salvation; my
tongue shall rejoice in Thine
Righteousness.
O Lord, Thou shalt open my lips; and
my mouth shall declare Thy Praise.
148
For if Thou hadst desired sacrifice, I
had given it; with whole-burnt
offerings Thou shalt not be pleased.
A sacrifice unto God is a broken
spirit; an heart that is broken and
humbled God will not despise.
Do good, O Lord, in Thy Good
Pleasure unto Sion; and let the walls
of Jerusalem be builded.
Then shalt Thou be pleased with a
sacrifice of righteousness; with
oblation and whole-burnt offerings;
then shall they offer bullocks upon
Thine Altar.
Glory be…

Psalm 101. O Lord, hear my prayer,

and let my cry come unto Thee.
Turn not Thy Face away from me; in
the day when I am afflicted, incline
Thine Ear unto me.
In the day when I call upon Thee,
quickly hearken unto me.

149
For my days are vanished like smoke;
and my bones consumed like wood
for the burning.
I am smitten like grass, and withered
is mine heart; for I forgot to eat my
bread.
By reason of the voice of my
groaning; my bone hath cleaved unto
my flesh.
I am become like a pelican of the
wilderness; I am like an owl in a
ruined house.
I have watched, and am like a
sparrow; that sitteth alone upon the
house-top.
The whole day long mine enemies
reproached me; and they that praised
me made an oath against me.
For before the Face of Thine Wrath
and Thine Anger; I ate ashes like
bread.
And my drink I mingled with
weeping; for after uplifting me, Thou
hast dashed me down.
My days like a shadow have declined;
and I like grass am withered.
150
But Thou, O Lord, for ever abidest;
and Thy remembrance is unto
generation and generation.
Thou shalt rise up and have pity upon
Sion; for it is time to have
compassion on her; yea, the time is
come.
For Thy servants have taken pleasure
in her stones; and they shall feel pit
for her dust.
And the nations shall fear Thy Name,
O Lord; and all the kings of the Earth
Thy Glory.
For the Lord shall build up Sion; and
He shall be seen in His Glory.
He hath regarded the prayer of the
humble; and hath not despise their
supplication.
Let this be written for another
generation; and the people that is
being created shall praise the Lord.
For He hath looked out from His
Holy Height; the Lord from Heaven
hath looked upon the Earth.

151
To hear the groaning of them that be
in fetters; to loose the sons of the
slain.
To declare in Sion the Name of the
Lord; and His Praise in Jerusalem.
When the peoples are gathered
together; and the kings to serve the
Lord.
He answered Him in the way of his
strength; the fewness of my days
declare unto me.
Take me not away at the half of my
days; in generations and generations
are Thy years.
In the beginning, O Lord, Thou didst
lay the foundation of the Earth; and
the Heavens are the works of Thine
Hands.
They shall perish, but Thou abidest;
and all like a garment shall grow old.
And as a vesture shalt Thou fold
them, and they shall be changed; but
Thou Art the Same, and Thy years
shall not fail.

152
The sons of Thy servants shall have
their dwelling; and their seed for ever
shall be guided aright.
Glory be…

Psalm 129. Out of the depths have I

cried unto Thee, O Lord; O Lord,
hear my voice.
Let Thine Ears be attentive; to the
voice of my supplication.
If Thou shouldest mark iniquities, O
Lord; O Lord, who shall stand?
For with Thee there is forgiveness;
for Thy Name’s Sake have I patiently
waited for Thee, O Lord.
My soul hath waited patiently for Thy
word; my soul hath hoped in the
Lord.
From the morning watch until night;
from the morning watch let Israel
hope in the Lord.
For with the Lord there is Mercy; and
with Him is plenteous redemption.
And He shall redeem Israel; out of all
his iniquities.
153
Glory be…

Psalm 142. O Lord, hear my prayer;

give ear unto my supplication in Thy
Truth; hearken unto me in Thine
Righteousness.
And enter not into judgment with Thy
servant; for in Thy Sight shall no man
living be justified.
For the enemy hath persecuted my
soul; he hath humbled my life down
to the Earth.
He hath sat me in darkness as those
that have been long dead; and my
spirit within me is become
despondent; within me mine heart is
troubled.
I remembered days of old, I meditated
on all Thy works; I pondered on the
creations of Thine Hands.
I stretched forth mine hands unto
Thee; my soul thirsteth after Thee
like a waterless land.
Quickly hear me, O Lord; my spirit
hath fainted away.
154
Turn not Thy Face away from me;
lest I be like them that go down into
the pit.
Cause me to hear Thy Mercy in the
morning; for in Thee have I put mine
hope.
Cause me to know, O Lord, the way
wherein I should walk; for unto Thee
have I lifted up my soul.
Rescue me from mine enemies, O
Lord; unto Thee have I fled for
refuge; teach me to do Thy Will, for
Thou Art my God.
Thy Good Spirit shall lead me in the
land of uprightness; for Thy Name’s
Sake, O Lord, shalt Thou quicken me.
In Thine Righteousness shalt Thou
bring my soul out of affliction; and in
Thy Mercy shalt Thou utterly destroy
mine enemies.
And Thou shalt cut off all them that
afflict my soul; for I am Thy servant.
Glory be…

Fifteen Gradual Psalms
Psalm 119. Unto the Lord in min
affliction have I cried; and He heard
me.
O Lord, deliver my soul from
unrighteous lips; and from a crafty
tongue.
What shall be given unto thee; and
what shall be added unto thee for thy
crafty tongue?
The arrows of the might one;
sharpened with coals of the desert.
Woe is me, for my sojourning is
prolonged; I have tented with the
tentings of Kedar; my soul hath long
been a sojourner.
With them that hate peace I was
peaceable; when I spake unto them
they warred against me without a
cause.
Glory be…
As it was…

156
Psalm 120. I have lifted up mine eyes
to the mountains; from whence
cometh mine help.
Mine help cometh from the Lord;
Who hath made Heaven and the
Earth.
Give not thy foot unto moving; and
may He not slumber that keepeth
thee.
Behold, He shall not slumber nor
shall He sleep; He that keepeth Israel.
The Lord shall keep thee; the Lord is
thy shelter at thine right hand.
The sun shall not burn thee by day;
nor the moon by night.
The Lord shall keep thee from all
evil; the Lord shall guard thy soul.
The Lord shall keep thy coming in
and thy going out; from henceforth
and for evermore.

Psalm 121. I was glad because of

them that said unto me; Let us go into
the House of the Lord.
157
Our feet have stood; in thy courts, O
Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is builded as a city; which
its dwellers share in concord.
For there the tribes went up, the tribes
of the Lord; as a testimony for Israel,
to give thanks to the Name of the
Lord.
For there are set thrones unto
judgment; thrones over the House of
David.
Ask now for the things which are for
the peace of Jerusalem; and for the
prosperity of them that love thee.
Let peace be now in thy strength; and
prosperity in thy palaces.
For the sake of my brethren and my
neighbours; I spake peace concerning
thee.
Because of the House of the Lord Our
God; I have sought good things for
thee.
Glory be…

158
Psalm 122. Unto Thee have I lifted
up mine eyes; unto Thee that dwellest
in heaven.
Behold, as the eyes of servants; look
unto the hands of their masters.
As the eyes of the handmaid look
unto the hands of her mistress; so do
our eyes look unto the Lord Our God,
until He take pity on us.
Have mercy on us, O Lord; have
mercy on us; for greatly are we filled
with abasement.
Greatly hath our soul been filled
therewith * let reproach come upon
them that prosper, and abasement on
the proud.
Glory be…

Psalm 123. Had it not been that the

Lord was with us, let Israel now say *
had it not been that the Lord was with
us.
When men rose up against us * then
had they swallowed us up alive.

159
When their wrath raged against us *
then had the water overwhelmed us.
Our soul hath passed through a
torrent * then had our soul passed
through the water that is irresistible.
Blessed be the Lord Who hath not
given us * to be a prey to their teeth.
Our soul like a sparrow was delivered
* out of the snare of the hunters.
The snare is broken * and we are
delivered.
Our Help is in the Name of the Lord
* Who hath made Heaven and the
Earth.
Glory be…

Psalm 124. They that trust in the

Lord shall be as Mount Sion * he that
dwelleth at Jerusalem, nevermore
shall he be shaken.
Mountains are round about her, and
the Lord is round about His people *
from henceforth and for evermore.
For the Lord will not permit the rod
of sinners to be upon the lot of the
160
righteous * lest the righteous stretch
forth their hands upon iniquities.
Do good, O Lord, unto them that are
good * and unto the upright of heart.
But them that turn aside unto crooked
ways shall the Lord lead away with
the workers of iniquity * peace be
upon Israel.
Glory be…
As it was…

Psalm 125. When the Lord turned

again the captivity of Sion * we
became as men that are comforted.
Then was our mouth filled with joy *
and our tongue with rejoicing.
Then shall they say among the
nations * The Lord hath done great
things unto them.
The Lord hath done great things
among us * and we are become glad.
Turn again, O Lord, our captivity *
like streams in the south.
They that sow with tears * shall reap
with rejoicing.

161
In their going they went, and they
wept * as they cast their seeds.
But in their coming shall they come
with rejoicing * bearing their sheaves.
Glory be…

Psalm 126. Except the Lord build the

house * in vain do they labour that
build it.
Except the Lord guard the city * in
vain doth he watch that guardeth her.
It is vain for you to rise at dawn * Ye
that eat the bread of sorrow, rouse
yourselves after resting.
When He hath given sleep to His
beloved * lo, sons are the heritage of
the Lord, the reward of the fruit of the
womb.
Like arrows in the hand of a might
man * so are the sons of them that
were outcasts.
Blessed is he that shall fulfill his
desires with them * they shall not be
put to shame when they speak to their
enemies in the gates.
162
Glory be…

Psalm 127. Blessed are all they that

fear the Lord * that walk in His
ways.
Thou shalt eat the fruit of thy labours
* blessed art thou, and well shall it be
with thee.
Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine *
on the sides of thine house.
Thy sons like young olive tress *
round about thy table.
Behold, so shall the man blessed *
that feareth the Lord.
The Lord bless thee out of Sion * and
mayest thou see the good things of
Jerusalem all the days of thy life.
And mayest thou see thy children’s
children * peace be upon Israel.
Glory be…

Psalm 128. Many a time have they

warred against me from mine youth;
let Israel now say.
163
Many a time have they warred against
me from mine youth * and yet they
have not prevailed against me.
The sinners wrought upon my back *
they lengthened out their iniquity.
The Lord is Righteous; He hath cut
asunder the necks of sinners * let
them be put to shame and turned
back, all they that hate Sion.
Let them be as the grass upon the
housetop * which before it is plucked
up is withered away.
Wherefore the reaper filleth not his
hand * nor he that gathereth sheaves
his bosom.
Nor have they that passed by said:
The blessing of the Lord come upon
you * We have blessed you in the
Name of the Lord.
Glory be…

Psalm 129. Out of the depths have I

cried unto Thee, O Lord; * O Lord,
hear my voice.

164
Let Thine Ears be attentive * to the
voice of my supplication.
If Thou shouldest mark iniquities, O
Lord, * O Lord, who shall stand?
For with Thee there is forgiveness, *
for Thy Name’s Sake have I patiently
waited for Thee, O Lord.
My soul hath waited patiently for Thy
word, * my soul hath hoped in the

all his iniquities.

Psalm 130. O Lord, mine heart is not

exalted, * nor are mine eyes become
lofty.
Nor have I walked in things too great,
* or too marvellous for me.
165
If I were not humble-minded, * but
exalted my soul,
As one weaned from his mother, * so
would Thou requite my soul.
Let Israel hope in the Lord, * from
henceforth and for evermore.
Glory be…

Psalm 131. Remember, O Lord,

David, * and all his meekness.
How he made an oath unto the Lord *
and vowed unto the God of Jacob:
I shall not go into the dwelling of
mine house; * I shall not ascend upon
the bed of my couch:
I shall not give sleep to mine eyes, *
nor slumber to mine eyelids:
Nor rest to my temples, until I find a
place for the Lord, * an habitation for
the God of Jacob.
Lo, we have heard of it in Ephratha, *
we have found it in the plains of the
wood.

166
Let us go forth into His Tabernacles,
* let us worship at the place where
His Feet have stood.
Arise, O Lord, into Thy rest, * Thou
and the Ark of Thine Holiness.
Thy priests shall be clothed with
righteousness, * and thine righteous
shall rejoice.
For the sake of David Thy servant, *
turn not Thy Face away from Thine
anointed one.
The Lord hath sworn in truth unto
Dave, and He will not annul it: * “Of
the fruit of thy loins will I set upon
thy throne.
“If thy sons keep My Covenant, * and
these Testimonies which I will teach
them:
“Their sons also, * shall sit for ever
on thy throne.”
For the Lord hath elected Sion, * He
hath chosen her to be an habitation
for Himself.
This is my rest for ever and ever, *
here will I dwell, for I have chosen
her.
167
Blessing, I will bless her pursuit, *
her beggars will I satisfy with bread.
Her priests will I cloth with salvation,
* and her saints with rejoicing shall
rejoice.
There will I make to spring forth an
horn for David, * I have prepared a
lamp for My Christ.
His enemies will I clothe with shame,
* but upon Him shall My
Sanctification flourish.

Psalm 132. Behold now, what is so

good or so joyous * as for brethren to
dwell together in unity?
It is like the oil of myrrh upon the
head, * which runneth down upon the
beard, upon the bear of Aaron:
Which runneth down to the fringe of
his raiment, * it is like the dew of
Aermon, which cometh down upon
the mountains of Sion.
For there the Lord commanded the
blessed, * life for evermore.

Psalm 133. Behold now, bless ye the

Lord, * all ye servants of the Lord.
Ye that stand in the House of the
Lord, * in the Courts of the House of
Our God.
In the nights lift up your hands unto
the Holies, * and bless the Lord.
The Lord bless thee out of Sion, * He
that made Heaven and Earth.
