SPM BIOLOGY PAPER 3 [4551/3] ANSWER TECHNIQUE

 Question 1 [33 marks]  Question 2 [17 marks]

QUESTION 1 [33 marks]

 Read the instruction and step given and determine the MV and RV.

(a) Measure and record the value in the spaces provided.

(b) (i) Observation:

Observation 1: Write the MV with the lowest value followed by RV with the value.
 When the MV is __0.2__M, the RV is __1.9__cm
Observation 2: Write the MV with the lowest value followed by RV with the value.
 When the MV is __0.6__M, the RV is __1.4__cm

(ii) Inference
Inference for observation 1:
 State the lowest MV  0.2M sucrose solution…
 Interpreted the value  …is hypotonic compared to cell sap,
 Cause …  Water diffuse into the potato disc by osmosis.

Inference for observation 2:

 State the highest MV  0.6M sucrose solution…
 Interpreted the value  …is hypertonic compared to cell sap,
 Cause …  Water diffuse into the potato disc by osmosis.

(c) Variables and method to handle the variables.

Variables Method to handle the variables
- Place / Put / Use … different … (state all value in MV)
MV  Use different [MV, different concentration of sucorose
solution] 0.2M, 0.4M and 0.6 M.
Can be founded - Measure and record … by using (apparatus)
on question / - Count and record … by using (apparatus)
columns of table - Weigh and record … by using (apparatus)
RV - Calculate and record … by using formula.
 Measure and record [MV, final diameter of potato disc]
by using ruler / meter rule.
- Fix … state the value
CV Max 1 CV  Fix the [CV, initial diameter of potato disc] that is 1.5 cm

(d) Hypothesis
 (Relationship) When [MV] increases/ decreases, [RV] increases / decreases.
- LINKAGE : higher / lower / increase / decrease / shorter / longer / etc.
 When [MV, the concentration of sucrose solution] increases,
[RV, the final diameter of potato disc] decreases.

(e) (i) Construct a table

 In table form with line on every column and row,
 Have all the title provided.
 Have unit.

SPM BIOLOGY PAPER 3 [4551/3] ANSWER TECHNIQUE
Your table should have the following titles:
 Concentration of sucrose solution
 Initial diameter of the potato disc.
 Final diameter of potato disc.
 Percentage change in diameter of potato disc.
Concentration Percentage change in
Initial diameter of Final diameter of
of sucrose diameter of potato
the potato disc potato disc
solution disc
(CM) (CM)
(M) (%)
0.2 1.5 1.9 26.67
0.4 1.5 1.6 6.67
0.6 1.5 1.4 -6.67
* Percentage will be in POSITIVE or NEGATIVE value.

(ii) Draw a graph

 Axes with unit
 All points are marked
 Value are consistent (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 0, 2, 4, 6, 8)
 Smooth curve and no extrapolation line
* Hanging graph are acceptable (less than 8 point)
* Free hand

(f) Explain Relationship based on the graph

 Give the relation
 Give the reason
 Give the effect.
 0.5M. The percentage change in diameter is 0 because the rate of water diffuses into
and out of the cell is equal.

(g) Operational definition

 What? [Put the main material]
Osmosis is the movement of water into or from POTATO DISC through the
plasma membrane due to the different concentration between SUCROSE
SOLUTION and the cell sap of POTATO DISC ………
 Predict / effect
 ….. result in changes in diameter of potato disc.
 RV is affected by / depends on / influenced by MV
 Final diameter of potato disc is affected by concentration of sucrose solution.

(h) Prediction and explanation

 State the RV increases / decrease / more / less / etc. [DO NOT give the VALUE.]
 [RV, Final diameter of potato disc] more than 1.9 cm.
 Effect 1
 Distilled water is hypertonic to the cell sap of potato disc.
 Effect 2
 So more water diffuses into the potato disc by osmosis.
