The History of editing is long and technical full
of twists and changes. In the beginning editing
was simple and didn’t require technical know-
how, more it consisted of an artistic touch and
knowing what to cut now this was unreliable as
you could quite easily cut one of the most
necessary clips in the whole film, This lead to
editors being praised as engineers behind the
scenes with the pressure of making a film good
resting on their shoulders, this would however
faze out as the years went on and editors
would no longer be hidden away behind the
scenes and never be talked about but would go
on to lead projects with directors and
producers backing them when push came to
shove. This is the story of editing.
Through time editing was advancing and when
videotape was created editing changed to be
more technical as you could change what you
wanted as it progressed. To many of the
original editors this new form of editing was
seen as inept and didn’t require as much skill as
having the refined eye that cutting the actual
footage required. The final and most recent
form of editing if non-liner editing on the
computer using premier pro and other similar
software programs.
Through the history of editing there have been
many famous people that have had a notable
influence on editing such as Robert William
Paul who was one of the first people to edit
film he was one of the first editors who would
go on to use cuts in editing and is held in high
regard as one of the first editors. Sergei
Eisenstein was another famous editor who is
known as one of the founding fathers of editing
with the work he put into the industry as he
was the first person who used a montage and
he liked using them in his films as it made his
films unique in the sea of films that where put
out. The most recent unique editorial style is

Music videos
Video, video killed the radio star and
with the styles of editing used in music
videos the radio star had no way of
coming back. The Buggles hit it big uses
a vast variety of editing techniques in
order to debuted the first creative music
video.
Music videos haven’t been around for
as long as film and so when the first
creative one was debuted it already
had access to more technical forms of
editing and there was a split between
radio and TV and as The Buggles say in
the end video killed the radio star with
the birth of music videos. As music
videos got bigger and bigger the stars
of music started to take to them making
them their own some told stories like the
Human league with don’t you want me
which relied on editing techniques
similar to film and television. Another
was a-ha with take on me which used
more computer editing techniques to
create the storyboard visual. Some
however was more focused on dancing
and less on a story such as Michael
Jackson with thriller which has cutting
back and forth and relies heavily on
focusing upon Michael Jackson
The 90’s had a lot more variety when it
came to music videos, at the start of
the 90’s George Michael released
Freedom which relied on the sex sells
aspect as well as iconic scenes and

constant cutting back and forth
between the different scantily clad
models. Nirvana’s smells like teen spirit
was similar to basic music videos with a
focus on the band playing music
however they used constant cuts to the
crowd destroying the set.
The first Viral video was Praise you which
would go on to define an entire form of
online video with the flash mob style of
video. Towards the end of the 90’s
more technical styles of music video
where being created with music videos
such as Eminem with my name is
demonstrating almost every signal
editing style that exists from simple cuts
to the show within a show. Other
examples of unique editing styles from
the late 90’s was let forever be which
was edited to look like the girl in the
music video was going insane and a
kaleidoscope effect.
Technology
Technology wasn’t always the high tech
super refined cutting within
microsecond’s type of software we
have now, in fact in the beginning it
was in its infancy and cutting machines
were used and the older generations
needed a keen eye for detail rather
than technical know-how that more
modern editors need.
Fast forward to the 1980’s and editing
tape was the big thing with people
being able to be a bit more lax when it
came to cutting as you would have
backups instead of having to edit the
main footage and if you make a
mistake on tape you can retry instead
of when you had to cut the footage
because when you cut original footage

there is no way of getting that back its
gone, for good you need to either re-
film the section and whatever you got
you have to be happy with or cut out
the section entirely. But with the
invention of editing on tape and the
ability to make mistakes filming became
a lot more streamlined.
Fast forward even further to the late 90’s
and early 2000’s and high tech
computer software is created and
editing is a lot simpler as you can cut
and undo this means that you can edit
more creatively and without the fear of
deleting vital footage. It also gives you
the ability to create various different
versions of the same footage. Editing on
a computer with high tech software
also enables you to create and use
more editing styles and techniques
because it’s easier to do on smart
software rather than editing in a simpler
fashion.
It hasn’t just been software that grew
and developed through time it was also
the techniques that are used now hard
cuts are rarely used and instead
montages, cross cutting and
fades/smashes to black.
French new wave
The French new wave was a mass
movement in cinema which was
comprised of now famous directors
such as Jean Luc Godard, Claud
Chabrol and François Truffaut. The new
wave was originally seen as upstarts
and untalented due to their new style of
editing instead of having a single story
told through a series of shots multiple
stories could be told at the same time
within film. Many critics believed that
the new wave had killed cinema with its
attention to quality and its desire to
break into Hollywood. The new wave
was created to break tradition and that
is what it did going against the norm
that had been set in place. In the
beginning of the new wave short films
had to be made due to the resistance
from the establishment it wasn’t until
1957 when the first feature film of the
new wave was created. The styles
where not inherently different however
there use of editing was much more
along the lines of it had to flow there
had to be. One of the major techniques
from this time was dubbing over scenes
as the cameras couldn’t pick up the
audio.

The French new wave combined with

the American new wave and new style
editing techniques are used with
Truffaut having a cyclical editing form,
in Bonnie and Clyde Bonnie reads a
poem to Clyde and this transitions to a
newspaper head reading over it before
publishing it and cuts to bonnie reading
more of the poem to Clyde at a picnic.
As well as hard cut to give of delusions
and to symbolise a character losing
their mind. The most unique feature was
there wasn’t a rule to editing Jean Luc
Godard liked jump cutting when he felt
like there was a waste of time. Bonnie
and Clyde was the equivalent to
breathless for American cinema. It also
opened up the doors and showed that
the viewer wanted more of that style
and so old cinema faded away and
the American new wave took over.

One of the Notable members of the

American New wave was Dede Allen
she was an American editor who
worked on Bonnie and Clyde which as
I’ve already stated one of the defining
feature films.

New wave would lead on to bigger and

more creative editing’s styles, styles
such as Edgar Wrights style of editing to
the beat but no one explains Edgar
better than Edgar himself. From here
editing could go anyway stars in the
industry like Thelma schoomaker
continue to path the way for the new
batch and directors like Edgar Wright
giving editors more power behind the
big movies and as technology is always
advancing it might not be long before
editing is the most recognisable thing
behind a movie.
