Whittling away
Chainsaw dust was flying as Rocky Thompson prepped a
huuuuuge tree to be put in place in downtown Glasgow on
Markle’s parking lot across from D&G Sports & Western.
The tree was donated by Johnnie and Jeannie Peterson.
An absolutely beautiful tree it is, but “It was really
outgrowing my yard,” Johnnie said of the decision
to donate it to the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce
& Agriculture to decorate for the Christmas holiday
season. So what kind of tree is it? Jeannie — “You’re
asking me?” — has no idea. Johnnie hasn’t a clue,
either, although he knows it is not a ponderosa pine.

only 50% sure on that. After checking trees out on the
net, we’ll give Lisa at least an 87.5% approval rating.
Pseudotsuga menziesii is an evergreen conifer species
in the pine family, Pinaceae. It is native to western
North America and is known as Douglas fir,Douglas-
fir,Oregon pine, and Columbian pine. There are two
varieties: coast Douglas-fir, and Rocky Mountain
Douglas-fir. And if it’s not a Douglas-fir, can some tree
expert out there inform of us as to its species? Oh,
and it was decorated on Tuesday evening. A total of 22
strings of 250 bulbs each, that’s a total of 5,500 bulbs!

The National Weather Service of Glasgow
reports that confidence is increasing for
accumulating snow this coming weekend for
portions of NE Montana.
Although there is still some variability in
expected snowfall amounts, generally speaking,
lesser amounts down to a trace are expected over
the far NE corner of the state, while up to 8 inches
of snow are possible near Zortman and Winnett.
The storm is expected to approach from the south
on Friday evening initially as rain, then quickly
change over to snow later Friday night. Snow will
then spread toward the north and northwest on
Saturday, then taper off on Sunday.
Expect snow-covered roads and hazardous
travel, especially US-200 west of Jordan and US-
191 south of Malta.

OBITUARY
Anthony Curley
Anthony R. D. Curley, 71, of
Nashua, Montana, passed away
November 23, 2018 in Glasgow,
Montana.
Anthony was born July 1,
1947 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to
Mr. Edmund Curley and Mary
Eileen Pope. He received his
early education in Pasadena,
California graduating from
Pasadena Academy High School.
He attended several colleges
including receiving a Master’s Degree from Point Loma
Nazarene as well as Doctorate in Sacred Theology.
Anthony was a Lieutenant Commander in the
United States Navy, from which he retired. He was a
survivor of the Vietnam War.
He was called by God to become the founder
and Bishop of The Benedictine Community of Saint
Anthony.
He is survived by children Martin A. Pritchard-
Curley, Elizabeth Hahn and Matthew Curley.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Family will receive friends on Friday, December
7, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. at the Bell Mortuary. Burial with
military honors will take place on Saturday, December 8,
2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the Nashua Cemetery. A Requiem
Mass will be held following the burial at The Monastery
in Nashua, Montana with The Most Reverend Abbott
Martin Andrew officiating.
MacDonald Benefit in Nashua
A Benefit for Brooke MacDonald will be held on
Sunday, December 2nd at the Nashua Senior Citizens
Center from 11:00-2:00 with a free-will sspaghetti
dinner and silent auction.
The daughter of Anny Byrnes MacDonald and
Walter MacDonald, Jr., Brooke has been diagnosed
with a very rare disease that is affecting her bones. The
treatment for this is chemotherapy, which is right now
taking place in Billings. There has been extensive travel
involved over the past few months and will continue to
be so.
This benefit is being put on in hopes of raising
funds to help defray some of the expenses involved with
all that is taking place.

District Judge Brian Morris blocked TransCanada’s
permit to build the Keystone XL Pipeline, saying that
the Trump administration had not fully considered
the environmental effects of the pipeline, despite that
the EPA had given it a “green” light during the Obama
presidential administration before Obama gave it an
axe with the stroke of a pen.
Judge Morris on Wednesday clarified his Nov. 8
injunction to allow TransCanada to conduct engineering
and planning activities, confirm shipper contracts, meet
with different groups and acquire equipment, permits
and land rights. If all goes well, construction can begin
in February of 2019.

Missouri River Country has Cooperative Marketing
funds available for communities in Northeast Montana,
designed to promote an area or event on a cooperative basis
with a nonprofit tourism-related organization. The intent
of this program is to encourage the development of new or
expanded marketing projects that attract visitors outside the
local community, thereby increasing the tourism travel to
the region and extending the traveler’s stay in Missouri River
Country.
The cooperative marketing funds are a 50/50 split
between Missouri River Country and nonprofit tourism
organizations. The funds are made possible by bed tax dollars
generated in the Missouri River Country tourism region and
are offered annually by Missouri River Country through an
application process.
Projects that we have helped fund in the past are
brochures for different communities and museums,
billboards, signage and advertising events.
