FREEMASONRY BEING A PROGRESSIVE
SCIENCE.
This statement appears in our 2nd degree Ritual
after the investiture of the F.C. The newly invested
brother has just crossed the floor, passing from the
N.E. to the S.E. of the Temple, but the allusion may
be taken of course as of much wider significance than
the progress of an E.A. to the rank of C .. n.
The progressive steps in Freemasonry symbolise an
expansion of human consciousness that covers a vast
field and the question that I am really opening is, have
we, during the 30 years of our Order, adequately
covered the ground indicated in our rituals?
Study and research work have been done abundantly,
by many Lodges and Brethren, and it may perhaps be
claicued that some of “the water of esoteric knowledge”
has been “ poured into the masonic vessels.” We
would all, however, admit at once that there still
remains much to be done, and the particular part of
our masonic workings to which I draw attention now,
as being specially important to-day, is the declared work
of the 3rd degree—the finding of the genuine secrets of
masonry. To this end indeed a solemn invocation is
made to the M . . of all M . . Builders at the opening of
every Srd degree Lodge to “ aid our united endeavours.”
Notwithstanding this we are becoming accustomed to
acknowledge our failure to discover the C .. and
consequently the genuine secrets thereon—in the ritual
closing! But success in this search alone can enable
us to redeem the promise made in the charge of the
