Catherine Seraphin, the Digital Media Project Manager at Harvard University, argues for the use of
general education classes in a higher education setting in her article titled “ General Education
Requirements: What's the Point?” Seraphin reveals that General Education classes have multiple
benefits that go unmentioned. She reveals that students need to learn how to apply skills in one class to
another subject entirely. General education classes “prepare students not for the world that’s there
now, but for the world coming in five to 10 years, where none of us know what’s going to happen.”
Which helps defend her point that one skill people forget general education classes provide is the ability
to discover. I disagree with her. I feel a student would be more likely to further explore a topic they
enjoy than a topic they are being forced to complete. I think General Education for freshmen may be
helpful due to undeclared majors and potential unreadiness for college rigor. However, continued
requirements for a field beyond a student’s major is pointless. How can struggling to do Calculus
problems help a writing student. The average citizen doesn’t do Calculus on the everyday basis so
us know students.
