2. Received the Treasurer and Financial Stewardship Committee's Reports, generally showing favorable status as to
our church's financial position (except for a developing deficit concern regarding the Preschool, which concern is being
addressed); and anticipating a 10.9% growth in 2019 Budget due to the pressing need to replace all four (4) HVAC
systems and convert the building to natural gas, which increase, however, is still being considered (in terms of timing
and otherwise) in light of emergent developments as to one or more HVAC units.
3. Anticipated improvements in the safety and security of the Preschool (including new entrance/exit procedures and
locks/security of the interior doors).

Maybe it is just me, but I don’t think so. I am always surprised when the Christmas decorations go up in
the stores and the traditional music starts playing. Over the years I have even found myself getting more
and more cynical about the whole thing. Not about Christmas itself, but about how we as a society go
about celebrating it. We know when the decorations come out and the music starts playing that it has
virtually nothing to do with celebrating the birth or Jesus and everything to do with money. Businesses
depend heavily on Christmas spending. If the holiday season is not “successful” the whole year is likely to
not be profitable, and perhaps the business will not even be able to survive. So, yeah, Christmas is
important. It keeps the economy humming. There is nothing wrong with that in and of itself, of course. It
is just that for those of us who take the birth of Jesus seriously, it seems counter to what we think should
be going on at this time of year. Some even refuse to participate in the commercial aspect of the season.
Bill Watterson, creator of Calvin and Hobbes, may have expressed their frustration best when he said, “Oh
look, yet another Christmas TV special! How touching to have the meaning of Christmas brought to us by
cola, fast food, and beer.... Who'd have ever guessed that product consumption, popular entertainment,
and spirituality would mix so harmoniously?”
Even if we do find ourselves somewhat cynical about the commercialization of Christmas, I think most
people recognize that there is something special about the season, even those who reject the religious
roots of the holiday. There is something of a wonderful spirit that settles over the world at Christmastime.
Norman Vincent Peale said, “Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is
softer and more beautiful.” Currier and Ives Christmas card scenes may be fantasies, and probably most
of us have never even seen a one horse open sleigh, and, seriously, who cares about Frosty the
Snowman, but it would be a shame to let our cynicism about the season rob us of the wonder and the
beauty of these days.
I heard a story about a little boy who stood looking at the Grand Canyon. After a moment he said,
“Something big must have happened here.” In spite of all the hoopla and even nonsense associated with
Christmas, hopefully there will be some who look at it all and say, “Something big must have happened
here.” Something big did happen here. God sent the greatest Christmas present of all time to tell us of
God’s eternal love that nothing can ever defeat. Let us allow nothing to rob us of our celebration of that.
Merry Christmas!

Preschool News
It is hard to believe November has come to an end and we are entering the Christmas
season!
November was all about Turkeys and Thanksgiving. For a family project each child was
given a turkey to disguise. We got back some very cool "turkeys" which included
mermaids, Mini Mouse, a firefighter, unicorns, and Batman. They were all very creative
and looked great!
We spent a great deal of time talking about what it means to be thankful. We read books,
made projects and sang songs about being thankful.
The week of thanksgiving we has pajama day and watched A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.
The kids even had popcorn, toast, jellybeans and pretzels for snack, just like in the
movie! We also had a wonderful feast together. Thank you to all of the parents for
providing the food for us. It was all deciduous!
We ended the month with a week of Gingerbread. We even went on a Gingerbread Man
hunt. We didn't catch him, but we did find a plate of delicious Gingerbread Man cookies!
As we move into December we are beginning to work on our upcoming Christmas
Program which will be held on December 12 @ 6pm.
