1. Content and Standards:


CC.1.1.1.C Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds
(phonemes).
CC.1.1.1.D Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding
words.

2. Prerequisites:
Students know the alphabet and letter sounds.

3. Essential Questions:
What sounds do our digraphs say?

4. Materials and Equipment:


Large Letter Cards
White Board Tables/Dry Erase Markers

5. Instructional Objective:
Students will demonstrate their understanding of bonus letters by vocalizing the
sound bonus letters make and correctly spelling and marking words with bonus
letters.

6. Instructional Procedures:
Before: Students will warm up by reviewing all letter sound cards with teacher.
Students will be introduced to bonus letters on out alphabet line. Ask students what
letters can be bonus letters. Write several words on the white board and have
students review them and identify which words have bonus letters. Tap out the
words to ensure students can identify the letter sounds. Introduce students to the
bonus letter mark-up.
During: Students will get their own dry erase markers and erasers. Teacher will dictate a
sentence and instruct all students to write the whole sentence on their white board table
and then mark up the word to demonstrate their understanding of bonus letters.

7. Assessment:
Check student understand of bonus letters by checking their written work.

8. Differentiated Instruction:
For lower level students, write dash marks on their white board tables to help them
identify how many letters are in each word.

9. Self Reflection
Lessons that allow students to write on their white board tables go very well. All students
are engaged and learning. As a teacher, I enjoy how easy it is to walk a student through
the process if they are struggling because we can easily erase and learn from our
mistakes. I’m impressed at the impact this has on student learning and my ability to
confer with students as I walk around the room checking for understanding.
