 A nuclear power station turns the nuclear
energy in uranium atoms into electrical energy
that can be used in homes and businesses.

 It is a typical thermal power station in which the

heat source is a nuclear reactor.

 On September 3, 1948 at the X-10
Graphite Reactor in Oak Ridge,
Tennessee in the United States, was
the first nuclear power plant to power
a light bulb.

 On June 27, 1954, the world's first

nuclear power plant to generate
electricity for a power grid started
operations at the Soviet city of
Obninsk.

 The world's first full scale power

station, Calder Hall in England
opened on October 17, 1956.

 Nuclear power plants, use Nuclear
fission to produce electricity.

 The three most practical types of

nuclear reactor fuel are:

 Uranium-235.
 Plutonium-239. A 96.6% pure Plutonium
 Uranium-233, transmuted from ring
Thorium-232.

DID YOU KNOW ?

 A single uranium fuel pellet the size of a
fingertip contains as much energy as
17,000 cubic feet of natural gas, 1,780
pounds of coal or 149 gallons of oil. A Uranium Pellet

Bruce Nuclear Generating Station.

Location: Lake Huron, Ontario.

 The largest nuclear facility in the world.

 Comprises 8 CANDU nuclear reactors.

 Three double-circuit 500 kV transmission lines

in southern Ontario.

 Three double-circuit 230 kV lines serving the

local area.

Total Output: 6,272 MW and 7,276 MW (net)

 Nuclear energy supplies some 12% of the world's electricity.

 Today 31 countries use nuclear energy to generate up to three quarters

of their electricity.

 A substantial number of these depend on it for one-quarter to one-

third of their supply.

 Twenty nuclear power reactors operated at seven sites by the Nuclear

Power Corporation of India has an installed capacity of 4,780
MW,2.9% of total installed base.

High capital costs.

Low direct fuel costs, with the costs of fuel extraction,

processing, use and spent fuel storage internalized costs.

Comparatively, strongly dependent on assumptions about

construction timescales and capital financing for nuclear
plants.

Aside Capital Cost, measures to mitigate global warming

such as a carbon tax or carbon emissions trading,
increasingly favor the economics of nuclear power.
