Title: Traveling the Spanish Speaking World


Subject: Spanish II
Grade Levels: 9-12
Description:
1. Scenario: Students will have the opportunity to learn about train and plane travel while
exploring Latin American countries. They will work with various written, auditory and internet
materials that share information on travel in Iberoamérica. They will focus on both written and
oral discussion about train travel using both the present and the preterite tenses. They will be
able to ask basic questions about travel and hold short conversations. Working in small groups
students will practice their vocabulary. They will research a Latin American country and its train
systems and provide this information to their peers.
2. TEKS:
1A: ask and respond to questions about everyday life with simple elaboration in spoken and
written conversation
1B: express and exchange personal opinions or preferences with simple supporting statements in
spoken and written conversation
1C: ask and tell others what they need to do with simple supporting reasons in spoken and
written conversation
1D: articulate requests and develop plans with simple supporting statements in spoken and
written conversation
1E: interact in spoken conversation using culturally appropriate expressions
2A: demonstrate an understanding of culturally authentic audio

3. Unit Goals: Learners will be able to:


 Review vocabulary about train and plane travel
 Discuss interesting train trips to Peru and Mexico
 Use the preterite of irregular verbs to talk about past events and a trip they “took"
 Use prepositional pronouns

4. Interpretive Assessment: Students will research travel in Spain or an Iberoamérican


country. They will provide actual information about their "vacation" to include culture and train
travel via oral presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint.

 Printer to provide instructor with hardcopy of presentation
 Word processing software/PowerPoint

6. Activities/Procedures: Students will


 Watch https://youtu.be/IDrhUh-mq7E - Spanish vocab for travelers
 Watch authentic videos from chapter of electronic text regarding Machu Picchu and La
Barranca del Cobre
 Draw countries randomly
 Complete the attached country study handout, researching information in the computer lab on
the country they selected
 Complete additional research on their country to include, but not limited to:
o How they got to the country
o With whom they traveled
o Length of stay
o Where stayed
o Activities (minimum 5) available for tourists
o Locations visited of historic or culturally relevant sites
o Local foods eaten and pictures
o Overall cost of vacation including air travel, hotel, food, entrance fees, activities,
etc.
 Using PowerPoint, present information to the class in Spanish.

7. Assessment will be done using the Presentational Rubric provided by ACTFL (copy posted
on the bulletin board).

8. Follow-Up Activities: After learning about restaurants and eating customs, students will be
“servers” and clients “Xicará’s Restaurant.” Students will provide a food for other students to
sample that is typical of the food eaten in the country of their presentation.
