TAKE OUT A PIECE OF PAPER

• Please copy the paragraph and give your solution to the problem below:

Romeo and Benvolio were at basketball practice. Romeo was showing Benvolio how to do a lay up.

Romeo noticed that Benvolio fell down after he did his lay up. Romeo lifted Benvolio up. Benvolio told

Romeo that he was out of shape. He has not exercised regularly for five years. Romeo encouraged

Benvolio that had videos for exercises he could do at home. Benvolio thanked Romeo.

When I saw Benvolio and Romeo later in the day, they were looking at the site. The site had a lot of

videos. Later in the day, I joined them. We were watching a video of a gorilla doing planks. We watched the

video for hours because it was funny. Benvolio, Romeo, and I were learning to do planks. The planks were

hard for Romeo, Benvolio, and I to do. Planks is a hard exercise. Romeo, Benvolio, and I kept practicing, because

Romeo, Benvolio, and I wanted to be in good shape for the season.

Problem: You have got to do another story assignment for my class.Once again (Uggghhhh!!) you have too many
sentences and you need to combine some of them. Like I told you last time, please do not mention the names over and
over again. Also, try not to use the words video and site that much. As a group, you will need to rewrite this paragraph.
(Each person will have their own sheet of paper.)

When you rewrite your paragraph. Tell me how this story is related to SLE#4.
HOW CAN YOU USE THEIR NAMES LESS

• REMEMBER that PRONOUNS come in categories called CASES.

• PRONOUNS in the ACCUSATIVE CASE, also called DIRECT


OBJECT pronouns, tell who or what is affected by an action.

• Ex. He thanked him.

• Who is being thanked? HIM.

• HIM is the pronoun in the ACCUSATIVE CASE.


EXERCISES

• Copy the two sentences below. Identify the direct objects. As a


group, rewrite the sentences with pronouns in the ACCUSATIVE case
so that the names of the direct objects do not repeat. (3 minutes)

• 1. Herbie bought a basketball. He put the basketball in his gym bag.

• 2. Corina’s mother took Corina to IHOP for breakfast. Corina


hugged her mother.

• 3. Luisa, the bride, got married to Gustavo. She embraced Gustavo


after they were pronounced husband and wife.
EXERCISES

• Copy the four sentences below. As a group, rewrite the sentences with
pronouns in the NOMINATIVE or ACCUSATIVE case so that the names of the
people do not repeat. For #5, answer the question. (3 minutes)

• 1. David exercised three times a week for months. The exercise helped David.

• 2. Aloysius likes peas and carrots. Aloysius eats peas and carrots every day.

• 3. Lucy eats at the salad bar when she goes out to eat. I saw Lucy yesterday.

• 4. Emilio wanted to make sure he got eight hours sleep before school. I woke
Emilio at 7:00 am as he asked.

• Which of last four sentences are related to SLE #4 and why?

Pronouns Nominative and ACCUSATIVE Case: Practice/SLEs 4, 5, and 6

Directions: Look at the sentences below and change the pronouns to the
nominative or accusative case. Underline the pronouns.

For #s 7 and 14, copy and answer the question in a COMPLETE sentence.
• 1. Susana does not put salt on her food, and Susana’s mother compliments Susana about
it.

• 2. Evander eats cereal without sugar, and when his dad takes Evander to the dentist he
has no cavities.

• 3. Penelope drinks eight glasses of water a day, and Penelope says drinking the water
