1 Drainage and Dewatering System

1.1.1.1 General
The drainage system consists of one free surface drainage sump sized to collect leakage water
from the shaft seals, waste water from the floor drains and seepage water. The water from
drainage sump is pumped out to tail race through submersible pumps installed inside the sump.

The dewatering sump (which may be pressurized) is provided for emptying the water (below
tail water level) locked between main inlet valve & draft tube gate to carry out inspection and
/or maintenance of runner and other under water parts of the Turbine. The dewatering lines
from penstock before & after main inlet valve, turbine inlet valve, scroll case and from draft tube
of each unit will be led into a common dewatering header which is connected to the dewatering
sump and from there the water is pumped out to tail race through submersible type dewatering
pumps.

Both the sumps will be located close to each other and shall be interconnected. Bottom levels of
the sumps shall be lower than the lowest level of the draft tube invert level.

1.1.1.2 Design requirements

The capacity of the drainage pumps is based on the normal anticipated water leakage from
the equipment, the water seepage through concrete structure plus the maximum water leakage
from the shaft seal. Normally it is very difficult to calculate the amount of leakage water and
capacity of the pumps is fixed by judgment.

The capacity of the dewatering pumps is such that with the main dewatering pumps running,
the turbine water entrapped between main inlet valve, scroll case and draft tube stop logs
can be emptied in reasonable time say 4 hours, taking into account maximum anticipated
leakages through butterfly valve seal and through the draft tube gate seals.
