1 What is a heat exchanger Understanding
2 Briefly classify heat exchanger Remembering

3 In a shell and tube counter-flow heat exchanger water flows through a copper
tube 20mm ID (inner diameter) and 23mm OD (outer diameter), while oil
flows through the shell. Water enters at 200C and comes out at 300C, while
oil enters at 750C and comes out at 600C. The water and oil side film
coefficients are 4500 W/m2 0C and 1250 W/m2 0C respectively. The thermal
conductivity of the tube wall is 355 W/m 0C. The fouling factor on the water Evaluating
and oil sides may be taken to be 0.0004 and 0.001 respectively. If the length
of the tube is 2.4m, calculate the following:
(a) The overall heat transfer coefficient
(b) The heat transfer rate
4 In a counter flow double pipe heat exchanger, water is heated from 250C to
650C by an oil with a specific heat of 1.45kJ/kg K and mass flow rate of 0.9
kg/s. The oil is cooled from 2300C to 1600C. If the overall heat transfer
coefficient is 420 W/m2 0C. Evaluating
Calculate the following:
(i) The rate of heat transfer
(ii) The mass flow rate of water.
(iii) The surface area of the heat exchanger.
In a certain double pipe heat exchanger hot water flows at a rate of 5000 kg/h
and gets cooled from 950C to 650C. At the same time 50000 kg/h of cooling
water at 300C enters the heat exchanger. The flow conditions are such that
5 overall heat transfer coefficient remains constant at 2270 W/m2 0
C. Evaluating
Determine the heat transfer area required and the effectiveness, assuming
two streams are in parallel flow. Assume for both the streams cp =4.2 kJ/kg.K
