Backcountry camping

 Backcountry camping is a self-guided camping activity outside trails.

 Shenandoah offers 196,000 acres for backcountry camping.

 Backcountry camping tends to be challenging based on the terrain and vegetation.

 Shenandoah’s rangers offer backcountry trip planning based on visitors’ physical

ability, skill level, trip length and landscape.

Hiking

 Shenandoah has over 500 miles of trails.

 Old Rag Mountain is the most popular and difficult trail in the park due to its rock

scrambles. Permit is required.

 The average pace for difficult trails varies between 1.3 and 1.2 miles per hour.

 Shenandoah houses 105 miles of the Appalachian Trail (2,180 miles total).

Horseback riding

 Horseback riding is permitted in more than 180 miles of trails in Shenandoah.

 Visitors can bring their own horses by following Shenandoah’s “Horse Use

Regulations.”

 Horseback riding is also allowed in the winter but it’s recommended to ride on

graveled trails only when trails are wet and soggy.
