• Understand the definition of flanged beam.


• Determine the effective width of the flange.
• Understand the differences between various types
of flanged beam.

• Flanged beams –when reinforced concrete slabs


are cast integrally with the supporting beams
• There are two types of flanged beam:
a) T-beam
b) L-beam

Find the effective width of the T -beam if it is simply
supported with span of 5m

EXAMPLE 2

Determine the area of steel required in a T beam with


the following dimensions for an applied moment of
260kNm. Depth of slab 100mm, width of flange 600mm,
width of web 200mm, effective depth 350mm. Assume
fck = 25N/mm2 and steel strength fyk = 500N/mm2.

EXAMPLE 3

Determine the ultimate moment resistance of the


following T beam; hf= 100mm, b=800mm, bw=250mm,
d=550mm, d’=50mm. The tension reinforcement is 6H25
and the compression reinforcement is 2H12. Assume fck
= 25N/mm2 and fyk = 500N/mm2.
