How do I expect to build on this lesson in subsequent lessons?

Students used their fingers and manipulatives to add, using those methods to solve subtraction problems with
help them.

What evidence-based practice or education research will guide my teaching?

Constructivism will guide my teaching. The students will be able to learn and use different methods to understand
and to solve math problems.

What other special features of my school or classroom will affect the teaching of this lesson?
Showing a video that is age appropriate to help the students understand how to subtract will help them. Using

LESSON IMPLEMENTATION

Anticipatory Set/Elicit Prior Knowledge: Students have been working on subtracting for a couple of days.
Students are struggling with the concept of subtracting.

Focus/Purpose Statement: Subtract within 5

Procedures:
 Introduce the lesson for the day
 Explain that we will be watching a short video about subtracting
 As the students are watching the video, write down a few sample problems on the board
 After the video is finished, get the students attention and direct them to the board
 Use one problems and model how to solve
o Draw pictures and cross them out
o Use your fingers
 Move on to the next problem and give the students the chance to share their answer.
 Allow a student to come to the board and show how they got their answer.
o Help the student if needed
 After completing the practice problems, have the students make a circle around the carpet.
 Do 10 jumping jacks for the body shaking activity
 Have students sit down and explain the worksheet that they will be working on
 Dismiss them by tables to their seats
 Pass out the worksheets to the students.
 Do the first problem together and show your work up on the board
 Walk around and help students that they need it
 As students complete the worksheet look over their answers and redirect them if they are struggling
 Once they complete the worksheet give them a math coloring sheet

Differentiation: Show the whole class how to subtract by using pictures and/or counters to show the students
different ways to subtract. Students can use math centers to help them get more practice going through math
stations that will help students build their skill. Struggling students need more instruction on how to use their
fingers and/or counters to subtract.

Closure: Students will complete a math coloring sheet.

Reflection on lesson: Using the video clip to help students learn how to subtract really helped them. The
students was struggling in math and observing that helped me create lessons to help strengthen their
