THE TRUMPET CALL

Our Mission: To love Jesus Christ and to share His Love

Our Vision: To be a Christian community where Christ is transforming lives
East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church Volume IV Issue 45 November 11, 2018

Pastor’s Corner
As we approach the season of giving, I want to briefly share my shopping habits (there is a point to this, I promise!). I’m
a strong believer in supporting the local economy whenever and wherever possible. “Shop local” is a great phrase,
especially among small businesses in our community. However, there are some things that are just easier to find online
or are only available online. Recently, I wanted sumac (no, not the poison kind!) for a Middle Eastern dish I was
making. Not being able to find it locally, I turned to Amazon.

There are many who don’t like shopping on Amazon because it’s too big and could put
smaller retailers out of business. What redeems Amazon for me is their Amazon Smile
program, whereby they refund .5% of Amazon purchases to the charity designated by
the purchaser. I’ve known about Smile for a long time, but was confounded in
designating our church as the recipient of the funds. As of late last week, that has
changed. East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church is now listed as an official charity
on Amazon Smile, with some big help from our denomination.

If you are a regular shopper on Amazon, I urge you to use Amazon Smile whenever you
make a purchase, because it does not increase the purchase price of whatever you are
buying, but it does give a half percent “kick back” to your favorite charity. Now if you decide to make your church your favorite charity,
even better! Simply go to smile.amazon.com and do a quick search on charities using the 18301 zip code. You will easily find our church
listed, and make that your favorite charity. Every time you use Smile to make a purchase, that half percent will come back to the church.
It’s a classic “win-win!” As I write this, I have two Amazon packages arriving today whose purchases will benefit ESUMC. By the way,
this works whether or not you are an Amazon Prime member, though you may need to designate the church each time if not a Prime
member.

Since we are in the time when many are buying Christmas gifts for friends and relatives, this could easily generate several hundred or
more dollars for our church between now and the end of the year. If you have no idea what any of this message has been about, you are
instead invited to talk to your grandchildren so that they can enlighten you!

Many Blessings, Pastor Jim

The children are learning about giving thanks as an action.
Their first project was a poster they made for the
veterans of our church to be displayed this Sunday. They
wanted to give a “hand” to all of the veterans who have
served our country and thank them for their
service. This young class is planning a church-wide “Give
Thanks” project that you will hear about soon.
