Artist painted the silhouette of a ‘ohia lehua (metrosideros
polymorpha) tree while camping in Hanawi Natural Reserve.

2. According to mythology, picking the flowers can cause it to
rain.
3. The plant is one of the most common trees in Hawai'i.

The painting is of the coast how it should be
before it was altered. In the painting is ‘ohai
(sesbania tomentosa), naupaka (scaevola
taccada), and naio/ false sandalwood
(myoporum sandwicense).

1. ‘Ohai is an endangered species of flowering
plant in the pea family.
2. Naupaka can grow up to 10 ft tall.
3. The hardwood of the naio is used in
construction of houses, spears and other smaller utensils.
