Standard
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.A.1
Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers,
yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to select appropriate measurement tools for measurement, including rulers
and measuring tapes. Students will be able to accurately measure lengths in inches.
Introduction
Begin by asking students what can we use to measure how long or tall something is? Tell
students that a unit is a specific length of measurement, and show the students an example of a
one inch unit and one foot unit. Ask students to name objects that they could measure with a
ruler.
Guided Practice/Interactive Modeling
Remind student that a measurement begins right at the number 0 on the ruler, not the number 1.
Emphasize the importance of allowing a full inch at the beginning of the measurement.
Demonstrate the importance of aligning your ruler properly.
Using different objects in the classroom, model the process of choosing the correct measuring
tool.

Independent Practice
Ask students to practice measuring objects on the Garden Measurement worksheet. Circulate
around the room to ensure that students are using the rulers to measure the lengths correctly.
Differentiation
 Enrichment - Challenge students to write 5 spelling words and measure their lengthin
inches. Measure the object in centimeters.
 Support – Assist students in aligning rulers on the worksheets. Have the students count
along with you as you point to the numbers on the ruler.
Check for Understanding - Exit Ticket
Students will complete a house measurement activity. Measure each length of every line on the
house.
