Theme​​: Voting Rights
Lesson Topic​​: Women’s Suffrage (1920’s)
Objectives​​:
Language:
1. Students will create a newspaper. Using key words from the lesson students
will produce their own headline and a paragraph describing the woman
suffrage movement.
Content: Students will be able to show
1. Students will identity the importance and significance behind the 19th
Amendment.
2. Students will be able to grasp the idea of the woman suffrage.
3. Students will be able to describe the ideas and accomplishments of the
suffrage women, such as Susan B. Anthony.

Learning Strategies​​:
- Visuals: Powerpoint, vocabulary & pictures
- Powerpoints will give students time to read, listen and share their ideas and
ask questions.
- Social: working with partner when reading article.
- Creative: Newspaper activity
- Auditory: listening to the teachers present & peers respond to questions

Motivations​​: (​building background​)


-Show clip of ​Iron Jawed Angels.​
-Ask the students about their knowledge of the constitution. Mention the 19th amendment.
-Ask for students to share what they already know about the women’s suffrage movement:
these can be written on the board for all to see.
-Show the students pictures of the suffrage movement.
-Mention the connection between voting and the suffrage movement.
Presentation​​: (​Language and content objectives, comprehensible input, strategies,
interaction, feedback)​ create set of directions for newspaper* in detail everything they needs
to know
-Powerpoint will be the introduction part of the lesson, where the students will learn the
keywords (vocabulary) they will need to know to create their newspaper.
-Statement of what the 19th Amendment is, when it was proposed and when it was ratified
(and how). -- the movement.
-Constitution mini replica (photo). Ask students what they know about the constitution prior to
this lesson.
Practice and Application​​: (​Meaningful activities, interaction, strategies, practice and
application, feedback​)
-Give a handout to each student to read and understand more in depth about the movement.
-Creating a newspaper based on keywords. Including head lines and paragraphs explaining
the suffrage movement. This will allow the students to have time to practice the vocabulary
words as well as apply both content and knowledge in the classroom.
-Powerpoints will give students time to read, listen and share their ideas and ask questions.

-Students can show their understanding through the creation of their newspaper: (including
paragraphs & headlines).
Extension​​:

10-12 pre-teaching session of vocabulary words:


We will make a powerpoint that will have the world displayed and a few pictures that
demonstrate visually what the word means. The definition will also be put on the slide.
Possibility: put the word and pictures and then on the slide following put the definition…
this could give the students a few minutes to brainstorm about what they believe the word
means.

Newspaper directions:
Reviewing the information and vocabulary you have been taught you will create your own
newspaper surrounding the women’s suffrage movement. Included in your article you must: 1.
Create your own newspaper name, create a headline and create your own article (paragraph).
All must be connected to the information you have been taught in today’s lesson. You are able
to look at the article given in class and use vocabulary learned throughout the lesson. In
addition, you can ask to see any slides of the powerpoint if you need additional information.
