FOCUSED TRAINING MODULES

HOW TO USE OUR FOCUSED TRAINING MODULES

STEP 1 Review the Lesson Content

Preview the video training lesson for the module to determine which employees at your
facility could benefit from this training. Focus on the following criteria:

· Who would benefit directly from learning this topic?

· Who should know about the concepts covered in this module?

STEP 2 Complete the Training Plan

List all the employees identified in STEP 1 in your TRAINING PLAN for the module. We
recommend that you identify your employees by job description (such as all the technicians or
operators) and use this to track their progress throughout the training initiative.

STEP 3 Have Your Employees Watch the Video Training Lesson

Have each employee on your training plan sit down and watch the video training lesson. We
suggest that you train from the top down: This will help you get everyone on the same page.

STEP 4 Carry out the On-The-Job Training

Identify a few knowledgeable employees who can take the others out to the plant floor and
cover the ON-THE-JOB TRAINING SHEET. Be sure to complete this step within a week of
completing STEP 3.

STEP 5 Quiz Your Employees

Have each employee on your training plan take the TRAINING QUIZ. To pass the test, your
employees must answer at least 3 out of the 4 questions correctly. If they fail the quiz, have
them repeat STEP 3 and STEP 4 before giving them another opportunity to pass the quiz.

FOCUSED TRAINING MODULE #10
Spring-Loaded Hydraulic Check Valves

ON-THE-JOB TRAINING SHEET

Training Facilitator:

Training Participant:

Training Date:

Training Location: In front of hydraulic blueprint with a spring-loaded hydraulic

check valve in hand. Requires paper and a pencil.

Explain that a check valve is designed to be used to allow hydraulic fluid flow in only one direction
and that this is one of the simplest forms of valve in a hydraulic molding machine.
Ask/help the employee to explain how the valve functions:
• When the hydraulic pressure is applied in the right direction, pressure on the ball pushes back on
the spring allowing the fluid to pass around the ball.
• When the hydraulic pressure is applied in the wrong direction, the ball remains seated, thus
preventing hydraulic fluid from passing through the valve.

Using the paper and pencil, ask/help the employee draw the symbol for a spring-loaded check valve:

Explain the components of a spring-loaded check valve as indicated in the symbol above:
• The circle indicates the ball in the valve
• The jagged line represents the spring pushing the ball against the seat
• The V-Shape indicates the seat with which the ball seals when the valve is closed

Ask the employee to identify the direction of flow on the valve. (left to right in the example above)
Looking at the blueprint, ask/help the employee locate some spring-loaded check valves.

Spring-Loaded Hydraulic Check Valves

TRAINING QUIZ ANSWERS

Passing Score: 3 of the 4 questions must be answered correctly

Question #1:
Which is not a type of a check valve commonly found on injection molding machines? (circle one)
A. In-line
B. Right angle
C. Reversing
D. All of the above are common types
On an injection molding machine, you will find in-line check valves and right angle check valves.

Question #2:
Directional valves are designed to control the distribution of pressure. (circle one)
True or False
Directional valves are designed to control the direction of the flow of the hydraulic fluid.

Question #3:
The arrow on a directional valve indicates… (circle one)
A. The only direction pressure can be applied to the valve
B. The only direction the hydraulic fluid can flow through the valve
C. The top of the directional valve when installed
D. The bottom of the directional valve when installed
The arrow on the side of the valve indicates the direction of flow to ensure proper installation.

Question #4:
Draw the hydraulic print symbol for a spring-loaded hydraulic check valve.
(use the space below)
This question requires your input. Make sure that the particpant’s drawing resembled the symbol
below. The drawing should include a ball, spring and a seat.
