Critical Inquiry Question: Related Issue 1.0 “Explore the impacts of globalization on
their lives”
Lesson: Transnational Corporations on Trial Time: 150 Minutes (2 X 75 min)

Transnational Corporation on Trial Worksheet

Preparation:

Have video/news loaded before class starts.

Adaptations:
Pair groups of students so to organize those that need help with presenting or speaking to the
whole class.
Lesson Procedure:
Introduction: (5min)
 Organize students to think about what products or foods they use and who
produces them.
 Introduce Transnational Corporations effects on the world; BOTH positive and
negative
o Use examples like Costco versus Walmart

Activity: (135min)
 Arrange the classroom in groups of 2 or less
 Begin the class by playing “Big Box Mart” stopping the comedic video to discuss the
process of globalization
 After the video stops, inform the class that today they are investigating transnational
corporations and putting them on trial for their affects to the world through globalization
 Let the groups assign themselves a corporation which they will be defending or taking to
court
 The students will complete the first page on their worksheet with chromebooks
 Once groups are finished with the worksheet then they should proceed to creating their
group speeches and answering the 2 questions.

following list to research. Complete the questions below.

1. Where is this transnational company’s headquarters located and in what year was
it established?

2. What other countries do they develop products or deliver goods and services in?

3. How many people does this company employ worldwide?

4. List the company’s various job positions (ex. Wal-Mart: greeter, cashier, etc.)

5. What is the average wage of an employee of this company? Does it differ


depending on the person’s position? What country they live?

6. What was the company’s gross annual earnings last year (2006)?

7. Based on your research, would you like to work for this company? Why or why
not?

questions above. You may want to use information from the
following sources to prepare your speech:

 the documentary “Wal-mart: The High Cost of Low
Prices” and accompanying question sheet
 textbook
 in-class discussions

Remember: Your speeches will be more convincing and


credible if you back up your position and arguments with specific
examples, case studies, and facts.

 Students will present and submit presentation for assignment.

Summative assessment based on assigned questions and rubric
Formative assessment based on participation in activity.
