RECOMMENDATIONS

8.1 Traffic Demand Forecast

After careful review of traffic demand forecast made in Phase 1 Study, the traffic demand

forecast on MRT Line 6 is carried out more precisely taking into account the stage construction

plan mentioned in 8.2. The results of traffic demand forecast are shown in Figure 8.1-1.

8.2.1 Outline of MRT Line 6

(1) Origin and Destination of MRT Line 6

The proposed Mass Rapid Transit Railway (MRT) System Line 6 starts form UTTARA North and

terminates to Saidabad, total length of 20.8 km. Total number of stations is 18 stations.

(2) Stage Construction Plan

The Study Team proposes to construct MRT Line 6 by following three (3) stages as;

 Stage 1: From Pallabi to Sonargaon 9.6 km

 Stage 2: From Sonargaon to Saidabad 5.8 km

 Stage 3: From UTTARA North to Pallabi 5.4 km

(4) Safety Consideration

Interim Report 8-2

DHUTS-PHASE II
Dhaka Urban Transport Network Development Study-Phase II

The Safety is the most important Mission of Transport Entities. The following transport policy is

essential to ensure safety operation.

 Top Management Commitment

 All Staff must be aware of Safety Policy

 Must do his duty correctly and completely

 Keep facility as Reliable

 Communication beyond job discipline

 Share same information

8.2.2 Route and Structure, Depot, Station and Operation Plan

(1) Route and Structure

After careful study of alternative route study, the proposed route illustrated in Figure 5.1-1 in

Chapter 5 is the best route among the others.

The Study Team examines three major structure types such as 1) at-grade structure, 2) elevated

structure and 3) underground structure. As a result of careful examinations, the following

structure types are proposed.

 Stage 1: From Pallabi to Sonargaon Elevated

 Stage 2: From Sonargaon to Saidabad Elevated

Interim Report 8-1

DHUTS-PHASE II
Dhaka Urban Transport Network Development Study-Phase II

 Stage 3: From UTTARA North to Pallabi At-grade

(2) Civil Engineering

 25m Standard Span length of Precast Box Girder is recommended for Guideway Structure

 30m & 40m Span of Precast Box Girder are is recommended at road intersections.

 60m Span Cantilever Type of Precast Box Girder is recommended at Mirpur 10 and

Sonargaon intersections.

 Large Size Single Bored Pile Foundation is recommended to minimize the influence to the

existing traffic and public.

 According to the Seismic Zoning Map of Bangladesh, proposed MRT Line 6 is located in

Seismic Zone-2. Seismic design shall be applied for the structures.

(3) Depot Location and Structure

1) Depot Location

The location in Uttara area which is far from Pallabi station to the northern direction approx. 1

km, is recommended for construction a depot. It is better to locate the depot parallel to an

alignment of MRT Line 6 stage 3. Because, this location is not so far from a main line, cause least

resettlement and effects on environmental and development plan in the future. However, further

discussions with RAJUK, NHA, BWDB and MOD is strongly recommended in design stage for

adjusting and finalizing the depot location.

Interim Report 8-1

DHUTS-PHASE II

2) Depot Foundation

The earth filling method is recommended for low land and swampy land which will cause no

effect on the flow of water after filling. While the artificial foundation method is recommended for

an area in water retention pond which any obstruction to water flow in prohibited.

It is strongly recommended to carry out more geotechnical and hydrological surveys at the depot

area in design stage. The consolidation settlement should be calculated carefully in advance for

determining the risk of long-term settlement.

(3) Operation Plan

After careful examination of the operation of the MRT Line 6, it is proposed the following

operation plan;

Number of car requirement is 90 cars in 2020 and 168 cars in 2025.

8.2.3 Station and Equipment, Signal and Telecommunication, Electrification and Depot Plan

(1) Station Layout & Floor Plan

 Elevated Type of Station is proposed along the existing road or alignment route.

 Concourse is proposed at 2nd floor level and Platform is proposed at 3rd floor level.

 Lateral type platform is recommended for intermediate stations and Island type platform is

recommended for terminal stations such as Pallabi Sta., Sonargaon Sta. and Saidabad Sta.

 Basically it is proposed that one ticket barrier for one station to minimize the related facilities

such as ticket bending machine, automatic gate, ticketand ticket reader and so on.

Interim Report 8-1

DHUTS-PHASE II

 Barrier free design shall be adopted. Elevator and stairs are proposed between ground floor

and concourse level. Elevator, escalator and stairs are proposed between concourse level and

platform level.

 Prayer room and toilet are proposed for passenger and station staff.

 Kiosk and shop area are proposed for passenger convenience.

(1) Station Equipment

(3) Electrification Plan

Interim Report 8-1

DHUTS-PHASE II
Dhaka Urban Transport Network Development Study-Phase II

In order to operate MRT Line 6, it is essential to provide electric power for train operation and

pertained facilities such as signal & telecommunication, lighting, ventilation and air condition,

etc. At the first step, the electric power requirement is calculated and location of substation is

proposed as follows;

Table 8.2-6 Electric power requirement

Based on the electric power requirement, the Study Team together with DTCB will discuss the

electric companies whether required power will be able to supply.

As for centenary electric wire, it is recommended for the MRT Line 6 to employ 2 types of electric

wire as trolley line and suspension acing as feeding line.

(4) Depot Plan

Interim Report 8-1

DHUTS-PHASE II
Dhaka Urban Transport Network Development Study-Phase II

It is recommended to design the depot with sufficient space and facilities for the maximum

capacity of all 3 stages i.e. 28×6 car trains. The necessary area for a depot is approximate 222,000

sq.m with a length of 1,200 m and a width of 185 m.

The preliminary design of depot layout in this report is used for planning and preliminary budget

costing purposes and should be reviewed in details during the design stage. The depot layout

should be adjusted by discussions with RAJUK, NHB, BWDB, MOD and other relative

authorities, similar process as the selection of depot location.

8.3 Project Implementation

(1) Project Implementation Schedule

The implementation schedule has been tentatively prepared as realistic by reference to past

experiences in similar urban railway projects.
