Why
All major (and many minor) life events are marked by occasions to which we invite family and
friend. Social gatherings offer friendship, entertainment, and relaxation. In the world of
business, lunches, dinner, and open houses offer opportunities to conduct business, to improve
employee morale, and to encourage or solidify relationships with clients, customers, suppliers,
and others.

How to say it
1. State the occasion (book fair, wedding receptions, birthday party, family reunion, baby
shower, CMT VI, CDM VII)
2. Give the date and time (month, day, year, a.m. or p.m.)
3. Mention refreshments, if appropriate
4. Include the charge, if any
5. Enclose an engraved or printed reply card and envelope for a formal invitation (R.S.V.P
is noted on the invitation). Less formal invitations may have in the lower left corner of
the invitation “R.S.V.P”, “Please respond” or “Regrets only,” followed by an address or
phone number. If appropriate, give a date by which you need a response.
6. Indicate the preferred dress (black tie, formal, informal, casual, costume) in the lower
right corner, when appropriate.
7. Let overnight guests know when you expect them to arrive and leave, what special
clothes they may need (for tennis, swimming, hiking), whether they will be sharing a
room with a child, will need a sleeping bag, and whether there will be other guests.
8. Additional information might include parking facilities, alternate arrangements in case
of rain, and an offer of transportation.
9. Express your anticipated pleasure in seeing the person.

What is R.S.V.P
In the context of social invitations, RSVP is a process for a response from the invited person or
people. It is an initials derived from the French phrase Répondez s'il vous plaît meaning "Please
respond".

What Not to Say


1. Don’t use “request the honor of your presence” except on wedding invitations
2. Don’t use abbreviations in formal invitations except for “Mr.” “Mrs.” “Dr.” and sometimes
military rank.
