Anchor Standards and Indicators
• Identify various uses of music in daily life and describe the characteristics that make
music suitable for a specific use.
Cn 1.8.2 Listen to and perform a variety of songs and have students classify them into
categories of purpose (e.g. music that motivates you, music you can exercise to, music
you can fall asleep to, music that helps you focus or study, etc.) and describe the elements
of the song that make it suitable for the suggested purpose.
Musical Concepts, Goals, and Objectives
• Learn and perform different styles of song
• Separate songs into categories
Material
• 4 different songs (Rocky theme song, Eye of the tiger, twinkle twinkle little star, All
Blues)
• White board with 4 categories
Procedure
1. Students will be asked what their favorite songs to listen and why. Instructor will present
the 4 categories (Motivation, exercise, sleep, and study)
2. Student will listen to all 4 songs keeping in mind the 4 categories. And write one song in
each category.
3. Teacher will go around and ask students to explain why they choose to put each song in
the category.
4. Teacher will tell the “Right” answers (Exercise- Rocky theme song, motivation- Eye of
the tiger, Sleep- Twinkle twinkle little star, Study- All blues)
5. Students will now discuss what elements make it suitable in that category
6. Students will now think back to their favorite song and out in a category.
7. Students will write down what in the song makes it suitable for that category.
Assessment of Musical Concepts, Goals, and Objectives
• Assessment will be informal with an exit ticket. The exit ticket will the explanation on
what category their favorite song fits into best.
Follow Up Lesson
• Play songs and have students pick category to put the songs in. Have class discussions on
songs that could possibly fit into more than one category.
