Architectural Programming

This chapter contains the first part of the design process. The research and the process
used to relate, examine, and explain the various needs in the project.

8.1 Concept Application

8.1.1 Circulation: Maximize the land for a connective function
1. Promoting and supporting social interaction

 Spaces that flow together, engaging participatory user experience.

2. Provide pedestrian friendly features

 Integrate wider walkways, proper pedestrian lanes, and ramps in

the facility

3. Zoning structures according to function and relationship

 Zoning structures that show a complex dedicated to movement

and fitness.
4. Incorporate the vehicular and pedestrian movement

 Separate provision for different entries should be provided in

going to different sports events and parking in the facility.

5. Regulating access through the spatial characteristics and circulation of spaces

 Circulation in the sports facility should be of minimum movement

to go to its destination so as not to create congestion.

6. Provision of convenient parking location

 For proper parking circulation, one should not follow the footway
movement or walking.
 Different routes should be provided.

8.1.2 Utilities and Maintenance: Planning spaces with respect to the utilities
1. Supply and maintain mechanical and electrical system

 Utility design should be in line with the circulation of spaces and

conform to the existing development.
2. Preventative maintenance to reduce emergencies and breakdown of
equipment.

 Control access to equipment, electrical and mechanical room.

 Provide fire exit route in the facility.

3. Easily accessible for maintenance to avoid disturbance in the facility

 Spaces placed and organized in a manner that is accessible in the

facility to be easily maintainable.

8.1.3 Security: Safety through security

1. Ensure the facility is not exposed to any form of threats

 Design separate entry and exit points to control flow of crowd.

 Monitor the going in and out of the facility.

2. Follow all necessary safety rules and regulations needed to manage risks

 A facility that follows all the necessary safety regulations and

guidelines to prevent risk.
3. Integrate technology in the facility system

 Used of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in the facility

as well as provision of walkie-talkies to the security personnel.
 Information Desk that requires visitors or users to show
identification for safety purposes.

8.1.4 Amenities: A place for everyone

1. Physically accessible public spaces and facilities

 Wide entrance/exits and pathways

2. Promote multi-sensory experience

 Multi-sensory experience mean to make sure the five senses are

all taken into consideration when designing the structure. To
satisfy the sense of touch, hearing, smell, sound and sight.
 It is important that visually impaired people can identify the door.
The most effective way of achieving this is for the door color to
contrast with that of the wall.
3. Complimentary and supportive to the natural and built environment

4. Incorporate innovations in the field for people with different abilities

 Braille on handrails and tactile signage provision in the facility.

5. Design spaces that members of the community may occupy and for comfort

 Public should not go through players entry.

 Many aisles should be provided to go down the sitting to reduce
movement.

8.1.5 Human Behavior: Active living

1. Create an environment that encourages sports participation

 Transparency through use of glass to encourage participation in

activities done on both outside and inside
2. Facility that allows people of all age and physical character

8.1.6 Design Concept: Understanding the relationship between form and function
1. Concept as to function, strength and beauty

 To create unity and harmony in the structures by understanding

the relationship between form and functions.
 Firmitas – referring to the structural stability of the structure.
 Utilitas – referring to function such as the appropriate spatial
accommodation.
 Venustas – referring to the façade or appearance of the building.

2. Building adaptability

 A complex that can adapt to the natural environment and at the

same time relates to the neighboring structures within the area.

3. Orientation of structures

 Structures strategically oriented to respond to solar and wind.

 Well oriented structures can use more natural lighting which can
reduce energy load associated with artificial lighting.
4. Whole building design approach

 Use of architectural approach such as additive and subtractive

5. Aesthetics

 Showcase of the use of geometric patterns along glassed

windows
 Carefully patterned glass for visibility of movement inside.
 Use of jagged shapes that can mitigate heat gain and provide
natural light.

8.1.7 Cultural Aspect: Diversity

1. Building character influenced by historic resources and culture

 Promote the locally abundant product in the city by reflecting them

in the design (from left to right: Pineapple, Sugarcane, Kalachuchi)
 Taking inspiration from the pineapples geometric features and
applying it to the façade of the structures.
8.1.8 Space Planning: Spatial needs and requirements
1. Accessibility

 Designing for people with different abilities.

2. Facility that is functional and operational

 A facility that can cater to the needs of the community both in

sports and architecturally.

3. Flexible spaces

 Spaces such as multi-purpose court designed for flexibility

8.1.9 Building Character: A facility with its own identity

1. Distinct building form and connect with the city’s character

 A complex that can be identified through its form by showcasing

Ormoc City’s unique products it is known for.
2. Respond to the existing layout

 Redeveloping by retaining the original layout of the whole

complex, putting into consideration the existing structures and
natural environment.

8.1.10 Environmental Stewardship: Good environmental stewardship is good

management of resources
1. Consider compatibility with the site

 The sports complex’s location is strategically placed beside a

public elementary school making it easily accessible for the
student-athletes for training.

2. Land development with consideration to the natural environment

 The land for the development is studied carefully to create a

proper zoning and avoid huge amount of carbon footprint
emission.
3. Efficiency, sanitation, and protection of the environment

 Provision of material recovery facility to receive, separate and

prepare recyclable materials.

8.1.11 Resiliency: Resilient design approach is the new sustainability

1. Vernacular design

 To include the traditional and every day in the design.

2. Apply eco-responsive strategies

 Designing with nature in mind.

 Use of passive cooling and rainwater harvesting.

3. Incorporate innovation in building materials

 Applying technologically advanced materials that will improve the

facility as a whole.
4. Feature sensibility and showcase functionality

 A structure than can respond or handle any events while

maintaining its integrity.

5. Facility that can handle disasters

 A facility that has the capacity to adapt with changing conditions

and maintain to be functional in the face of disturbance.

6. Design for energy retention

 Building orientation, size and shape plays a role in the amount of

energy that can be retained by the building rather than dissipated.

7. Locally specific design

 Promoting the culture and heritage of the city and creating a

facility that is influenced by historic resources of Ormoc City.
8.1.12 Economic Planning: Cost effective building
1. Productivity

 Satisfying human needs for the facility’s alternative uses in such a

way that the satisfaction yielded by them is maintained at an
optimum level.

2. Performance

 A facility that can perform and provide the needs of the users.

3. Economically feasible

 Ensuring that the development is economically feasible.

 The facility is funded by the government.

4. Risk reduction

 Ensuring lesser risk in the facility through provision of proper

signages, fire extinguisher, first aid kits and fire and earthquake
drills for lesser budget on Crisis Management.
5. Quality

 Ensuring the use of quality materials and quality work will stabilize
the structures life span.

8.1.13 Technologies: A structure that is resource efficient and environmentally

responsible
1. Use materials with capacity to respond to environmental events.

2. Promote use of non-polluting and renewable resource of energy

 Use of solar panel and provision generator set as backup in case

of power shortage

3. Use of better building finishes that extends life of the facility, less cost and safe
for users.

 Equip the facility with proper and adequate materials that can
create a heightened sense of improvement in the facility.
