CME 471 Mid-Term Examination October 27, 2015

No books or notes may be consulted during this examination.

1. (30 points) Hydrogen is used as a fuel for a furnace that operates at 1700 K. It is
burned with 10% excess air (20%O2-80%N2).
A. Calculate the available heat in Joules per mole of H2 burned. Neglect the heat
losses for this calculation.
B. They are considering upgrading the system by adding a waste heat recuperator to
preheat the air to 900 K. Calculate the fractional increase in available heat if this
upgrade is made.

Data Ho (H2O)298 = - 241,800 J/mol

Cp (H2) = 27.3 + 3.3 x 10-3T + 0.5 x 105 T-2 J/(mol K)
Cp (O2) = 30.0 + 4.18 x 10-3T - 1.5 x 105 T-2 J/(mol K)
Cp (N2) = 27.8 + 4.27 x 10-3T J/(mol K)
Cp (H2O) = 30.0 + 10.71 x 10-3T + 0.33 x 105 T-2 J/(mol K)

2. (40 points) The two equations below describe the vapor pressure of liquid and solid
zinc in atm. Find the temperature at which the vapor pressure of zinc is 10-5 atm. Is
liquid or solid zinc stable at this temperature? From these equations, find the melting
point and the Hfusion of zinc.
Ln PZn = -15088/T + 13.33
Ln PZn = - 14207/T + 12.06

3. (30 points) Answer the following questions in three sentences or less.

A. Explain the difference between heat and work.
B. Explain why the molar heat capacity of a material at constant pressure is larger
than the molar heat capacity of the same material at constant volume.
C. Explain why the absolute entropy of any substance at 298 K must have a positive
value.
D. If the melting temperature of a material decreases as pressure increases, what does
this tell you about the density of the solid material in comparison to the density of
the liquid material?
E. On a phase diagram, explain what a triple point is, and what a critical point is.
