Motor Enclosures
• Enclosures protect motors from
particles and liquids, provide
convective cooling, and guarantee
electrical safety
• Global certification agencies such as
UL, CSA, and ATEX test them for
safety
• The open dripproof enclosure prevents
particles and liquids from penetrating Sheet metal housing Vertical axis
[1]
up to 15 degrees from vertical of open drip-proof
enclosure
Ingress Protection (IP)

IP65 is a common rating

[2]

• IEC ratings define the level of protection an enclosure must

provide for liquids or particles using a 2-digit code
Totally Enclosed Nonventilated (TENV)
• No openings in the housing, and no
provisions for cooling except large
cast heat fins on the sides
• Not air-tight, but dust does not enter
in sufficient quantity to interfere with
motor rotation
• Suitable where the motor is exposed
to dirt or dampness. Not suited for [3]

explosive gas environment. Heat fins

Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled (TEFC)
• Similar to TENV, except a fan
is mounted at the rear end of
the shaft to draw cool air over
the motor windings
• Suitable where the motor is
exposed to dirt or dampness.
Not suited for an explosive
gas environment.
[4]
Cooling fan Heat fins
enclosed in cover
Explosion Proof (TEFC-XP)
• Electricals and packaging
are specified for safety
• Enclosure must withstand
an explosion of a specified
gas or vapor inside the
enclosure
• Electrical system must
prevent the ignition of a
specified gas or vapor
surrounding the motor
[5]
North American Ratings
• Class: material
around the motor
• Zone: frequency of
hazard
• Apparatus Group:
type of production
process
• Temperature Class:
max T in a range
