Overview of the lesson: Lesson objectives were reviewed with the students. Pictorial
representation was used established relationship between addition and multiplication. The
lesson was modeled for the students. Gradual release of responsibility was evident during the
lesson. Various examples were shown where the teacher work with the students to solve the
problems. Students were praised throughout the instructions.
The lesson continued with the students working in groups to create a variety of arrays and write
the multiplication and addition formula for these groups.
Areas for development:
The lesson did not provide any element of challenge for the students. They were able to
complete the assignment too quickly.
The differentiation strategies used should apply only to students who are having difficulties
focusing although all students should be able to complete 6 questions.
Only pictorial and abstract representation was evident during the lesson. Concrete
representation is needed as well to ensure deeper understanding.
Focus for next lesson:
Differentiation not based on the number of questions per group.
