Band
Spring Newsletter

Welcome to the 2018 Randall High School Marching Band’s Spring Newsletter! As the head band director, I am so excited
that you have chosen to make marching band a part of your high school experience. Let me share a few thoughts on why
marching band is so important:

BAND IS A GROUP EFFORT- Through various situations in Band class, you are going to be learning to take responsibility
for your actions, actions that could very well effect the entire band. Band members will be required to shift from an I/ME
reasoning to a WE/US concept. The values of cooperation, communication, concentration, and completion that are so
important to the success of the Randall High School Band come into play each rehearsal and performance.

BAND CREATES SELF RESPECT- Although we share many similarities with our athletic counterparts, BAND is a place
for everyone. Rarely is a person serving as an alternate or substitute. Everyone in the Randall High School Band plays a
starting role. YOU ARE IMPORTANT TO THE SUCCESS OF THE RANDALL BAND.

BAND IS A COMMITMENT- The success of the Randall High School Band is not measured by what we start, but rather
by what we complete. The important qualities of tenacity and persistence in classes such as band establish habits for positive
and productive living in your future.

BAND REQUIRES REFINEMENT- The refinement of our musical skills is very important in the Randall High School
Band. We are preparing ourselves to appreciate and understand how band can refine our skills inside and outside of Band
Class.

In this newsletter, you will find important information about the upcoming Marching Band Season in Fall 2018. The Randall
High School Marching Band has a long history of excellence and success. By being a part of this ensemble, you will grow as
a student, musician, and person. Thank you for joining us on this journey!

Sincerely,

Ms. Abby Giles

Randall High School Band Director

PROGRAM GOALS:

1. Stewardship of instruments, equipment & time:

Instruments belong in the case in the instrument storage

lockers. Each student will be assigned a band locker.
Instrument cases do not belong amongst the rehearsal
chairs. Leave the case in your band locker. Don’t leave
instruments in the bleachers after pep band
performances. Store your music properly in the place
provided. Protect our rehearsal time so we can get the
maximum from every class period. Please do not let
other things, such as cell phones or work from other
classes interrupt our rehearsal.

2. Value

Pep band and Marching Band is the best public relations

tool a band program has. For many of our school’s
patrons the pep band is the only contact they have with
the band program. Their opinion of the band program is
based solely on what they hear at ball games. We will
have about 18 to 20 pep band and marching band
performances this year. Each must be our best.

Healthy Band Camp Tips

• Bring water jugs, sunscreen, hats, etc. Drink plenty of
water before and after camp...again make sure you’re
drinking plenty of water before camp starts!
• Make sure to eat filling meals and don’t skip breakfast.
• Everyone will be issued a pouch (similar to a small
apron with pockets for your music/pencils/etc. that is
worn during rehearsal) so bring a water bottle that
could fit inside (size of a standard plastic water bottle).
There will be a water fountain running at the field
during rehearsal for refills and of course for drinking
like a water fountain.
• It is best to begin to acclimate to the heat and level of
physical activity that will happen at band camp. Begin
going outside more, take a walk, amp up your normal
exercise routine if you have one, start stretching, or
simply take your normal everyday activities outside.
This will greatly help prepare you for the long days
ahead.

The Randall High School Marching Band has a very active, supportive parent organization known
as the Randall Marching Band Booster Association. The booster association includes parents from
band and color guard. Without the hard work and dedication of the parents, the band program at
Randall could not be as successful and productive as it is. There are numerous areas in which
interested parents can be involved in supporting the activities of the band. General meetings of
the boosters are held throughout the school year; however, numerous committees do most of the
booster organization planning.

If you are interested in being apart of the Randall High School Marching Band Parent Boosters,
please email the current co-Presidents Ken and Susan Fulk at fulk@gmail.
