ii) How can an internet based home automation system be designed to solve the identified
weaknesses?
iii) How can a device’s status be changed remotely via the internet?
Problem Definition
Home automation systems face four main challenges, these are high cost of ownership, inflexibility,
poor manageability, and difficulty in achieving security. The main objectives of The proposed model of
the home automation system is as shown in the figure1. The model consist of different sensors like
temperature, gas, motion and LDR. Initially the Intel Galileo connects to the internet through WiFi.
When the connection isestablisheditwill start reading theparameters of sensors like p1, p2, p3 etc. The
threshold levels for the required sensors are set as t1, t2, t3 etc. The sensor data are sent to the web
server and stored in the cloud. The data can be analyzed anywhere any time. Ifthe sensor parameters
are greater than the threshold level then the respective alarm a1, a2, a3 etc. will be raised and the
required actuation is done for the controlling of the parameters. In the proposed model the
temperature, gas leakage, motion in the house is monitored. The temperature and the motion detection
is stored in cloud for analysis. If the temperature exceeds the threshold level then the cooler will turn on
automatically and it will off when the temperature comes to control. Similarlywhen there is a leakage of
gas in the house alarm is raised giving the alert sound. The required lights are turned on/off
automatically by detecting the light outside the house. The user can also monitor the electric appliances
through the internet via web server. If the lights or any electrical appliances are left on in hurry can be
seen and turned off remotely through simply typing the IP address of the web server.
SCOPE
Making homes even smarter is future scope for the home automation systems. Our homes can be
interfaced with sensors such as motion sensors, light sensors and temperature sensors which can
provide automatic toggling of devices by analysis certain conditions. Energy can be conserved by turning
on or off the light according to the environmental changes. This home automation technique can be
easily converted into or used as security system for our homes. Many solutions can be generated to
provide greater control and safety for home owners. The future scope will extend these systems to work
on a larger scale environments such as offices and factories. As this technology is new, once a full
control is achieved, it is important to clarify that this research also can include local control of HASS.
Research in HASS will help other researchers to achieve their goals in future HASS project and will
contribute majorly in large scale automation systems.
: METHODOLOGY
3.1 Requirements elicitation
Since the system is completely new, the requirements will be based on the perception of the
researcher, his experience and useful literature that will be obtained from relevant sources. An
understanding of the operation of the devices to be controlled will greatly contribute to the
elicitation of the system requirements.
Hardware and software requirements will be determined in line with the system. Information shall
be reviewed from research papers, internet, published journals and relevant books to understand
and ascertain the best suitable system requirements. This will be done in order to understand how
the current systems operate and how well they can be restructured or improved.
The proposed system will be designed using Unified Modeling Language which will allow the
usage of activity diagrams, use case, data flow diagrams and a flow chart.
Web pages will be developed using HTML and PHP using Dreamweaver and the database will be
developed using wamp server.
LabView will be used to simulate remote control and model the devices under control. These will
be linked to the web server, data base and a web page (the user interface). Through the web page,
devices will be accessed and commands will be input to affect the status of those devices. The
simulated system will be tested by issuing different commands to the appliances. A desired
response from the appliances will demonstrate that the system can perform a desired change to the
appliances.
3.5 Evaluation
This will be based on whether the simulated system is flexible by executing the keyed in commands
as expected leading to the desired change of status of a given appliance.
