Technology Integration Lesson Plan

Introduction/Purpose Statement:
 Through this project-based lesson, jazz band students will gain the opportunity to learn
how music is recorded which encompasses key concepts such as: mic placement, levels,
mixing, creating a system by mixing/adjusting levels, and different ways in which Pro
Tools can modify the recording to achieve an aurally pleasing/realistic recording.

Technology that will be used in my lesson include:


 Studio mics
 Mic stands
 Pro Tools

This technology will be used in its traditional function, to create a studio-esc recording.

Learning objectives supported by the use of this technology includes:


 Having an understanding of the function for each piece of technology and having an
understanding of the adjustments that can be made to the use of the technology to create a
balanced recording.
o Students will understand key terms such as: acoustics, gain, bass, treble, balance
o Students will experience setting up mic (and mic stand) and how placement
effects audio results in recording
o Students will practice using a sound board to change the levels of each individual
part being recorded.
o Students will explore Pro Tools and how it can be utilized to modify the
recording.
 With said understanding, students will collectively determine mic placement and decide
upon/create their system, that is mixing and setting of levels, (as a class, w/ teacher
facilitation).
 Students will take the recording home and make their own, individual, adjustments to the
recording using Pro Tools.
 Students will present their version of the ensemble’s recording, modified through Pro
Tools and explain/defend why they chose to do what they did.

This is an appropriate choice to support student learning because, like any other musical
knowledge or skill in performing, this information will provide students with an experience that
will help give them a more well-rounded music education. In addition, these skills can be applied
to many other areas/situations in the future because audio recording does not just happen in a
jazz ensemble.
Product/Process Sample:
- After discussing the concept of acoustics and selecting an appropriate recording space by
comparing the recordings for each space. (one class lesson)
- Next Lesson – Teacher: Let’s identify how mic placement affects the sound of the
recording. Throughout the period, different mic placements are tested and observations
are taken. Students vote on which mic placement sounds the best. Students set up mic
when recording in class from then on out (with help from teacher).
- Next Lesson – Teacher: Let’s identify how we can adjust our recording. Teacher
demonstrates the different parts of the sound board that will be used and how it affects
the recording. Teacher takes a chunk of the jazz chart being recorded (no more than 30
sec.) and has the ensemble play that excerpt, while on student from the ensemble gets to
