2 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
CAREER
Career is defined as a sequence of life

educational life [2,3]. Career as the application of a
person’s cognition and capabilities, providing
command over profession, timely work expertise and a
basis of developing and bettering business networks. It
also discussed that most people believed that career
could provide them improved standard of living [4].
Career advising was defined as reciprocal process of
communication between students and an advisor. It is
also a situation in which an institutional representative
gives insight or direction to a college student about an
academic, social, or personal matter [5]. Additionally,
it defines that advising is the reference to inform,
suggest, counsel, discipline, coach, mentor, or even
teach the students [6]. Career advising activities to
focus on ensuring that students are provided with basic
information on courses, college procedures, and
support services [7, 8, 9].

commodity of an institutions and they should give
attention and concern to student retention [10]. It is
stated that the core of institutional efforts to educate
and retain students to college is by providing an
academic advisor. Furthermore, it was believed that
academic advising is a campus endeavor that plays an
important role in directing students towards successful
career and life goal achievement [11]. This process was
described as structured service that interacts with the
students one-to-one with concerned representative of
the institution [12]. Moreover, it was discussed that
institutional action for helping freshman students in
includes student support activities such as advising,
tutoring and mentoring. Additionally, studies
emphasized that advising services positively and
significantly impact students’ learning and
development and it indicates that administrators should
seek to maintain advising services, even in an era of
scarce resources and increasing concerns over college
costs [13, 14, 15, and 16].
Academic Advising Problems
As institutions of higher education struggle to
meet the growing needs of students that demand
budgets, one strained resource are academic advising,
this is experienced by many students [22, 23]. The
previous statement was supported by describing the
career advising problem in different institution [24]. It
discussed that increasing student’s population entering
in higher education; new students suffer less
information about their course. Number of students and
limited time for advising, faculty member has not been
able to advise easily all students [25, 26, and 27].
Another problem in providing advice was detailed by
stating that advisors are not always accessible at times
and advising is not required during enrollment that
resulted to the non-advising of all students. Academic
advising is performed by the faculty member who is
heavily engaged in the teaching and research in their
own specific fields that resulted to low quality of
advising and reduced student satisfaction [28].
Problem faced by students that needs career
advising
Advising is a key component of a student
college career [29]. Students deserve to receive career
advice because they faced problems when entering
college and selecting courses. Researchers discussed
that some students do not complete college because of
lack of information on how to be successful or fail on
the information that they have [30].
Additionally, choosing bachelor’s degree course is
difficult for some students due to variety of courses
offered and they are not sure what course to pursue
[31]. Another reason is the wrong choice of courses
that lead to withdrawal [32] as well as students do not
know what they wanted to take-up that leads to
changing of another course afterward [33, 34, 35].
Studies have shown that one of the greatest concerns
among many college students is the availability of
good academic advising [36].
Machine Learning
Machine learning is usually used to predict
student’s performance since the task of machine
learning is to learn from based data, and then apply the
knowledge that was gained in real data [46]. Since
general point average (GPA) of current high school
students increases compared to the graduates of
previous years [47] colleges and universities increase
also their standard raising their GPA requirements [48]
for the upcoming college students. Machine learning
has the capability to learn more when the model is
exposed to new data; it adapts independently [49, 50].

3.4 Use Cases
