Fundamental of Intelligent control

“something intelligent means it has an ability to understand”. The only thing that shows intelligence is a
human being because he/she has an ability to respond on every kind of situations.

This is more than automation, automation is all about control.

It is like a microcontroller controlling room temperature. In this system

The microcontroller only senses the value of temperature and then actuates the output module per
program. The system will work per command written by a programmer, the cannot adapt to any
environmental changes or any new external condition. Also, it cannot respond to any unspecified data
or new data. This is how unintelligent control system works. Hence it portrays no intelligence

Difference between automation and intelligent control

In automation there is no machine learning, the machine works based on the commands alone.

Intelligent control involves learning, the machine has to learn on the environment. once the system is
subjected to new data (new environmental conditions), the machine has to learn the data first and then
try to predict the solution or take an action by itself.

The data to which the machine is learning is called training Data

Consider the diagram below

The above diagram shows how an automatic system or machine layout. It only consists of the sensing
devices, controller and actuation devices, there is now way that the machine would learn and respond
to the signals without being told to do so by the programmer. For instance, you may have a temperature
sensor, light sensor, and humidity sensor as the sensing devices and fan together with lamp as the
output devices. The signal from the sensors will be utilised only if the programmer writes a program to
the MCU to do that otherwise nothing will be done.
To make the system to be an intelligent control system you have to add the learning part, that the
system has to identify the input signal and respond to that signal even if there was no any command to
do so.
