Funded army with cocoa and coffee profits. Civil war threatened, Ouattara called for cocoa
embargo. UN stepped in militarily.

Complex Dynamics in Global Economy:

 Farmers in rural west Africa connected to chocolate and coffee consumers
 Relationship between nation-states and transitional corporations.
 Strategic military interventions by UN and former colonial powers
 Power of global financial markets. We see the power of consumerists to change market
demands by asking for things or rejecting things.

takes hours to fly. We have products moving really quickly in a large scale. (Vancouver)
Desire to pull trade into nations, shifting laws and tax to make the country appealing. See
changes occurring to laws and economics.
 Multinationals: global reach & lots of power. Huge carbon footprint.
 Travel/shipping = quick and cheap
 Decreasing taxes & laws on international trade
 Provides work & income damages environments, poor regulations can mean poor
working conditions

Most important drawbacks to globalization: ENVIORNMENTAL DAMAGE 

Benefits: widespread access to technology, communication and travel

Role of Anthropology: Understand and find solutions for sustainability issues, disseminate
conclusions to the general public, create cultural shifts. Anthropologists: OLD MALE WHITE
