The Box of Wonder and the Drawing of Truth

Welcome to the Box of Wonder and the Drawing of Truth! Our experience was designed to be
accessible to all, so it is simple to use. On our table we have the Box of Wonder which has a ball
that bounces around inside it when shaken. When the ball hits the sides of the box, it triggers
ambient sounds diatonic to C over which music composed in the Kandinsky will be played.
Using the Kandinsky software, participants can draw music to create melodies , harmonies, and
rhythms . Since the Kandinsky does so many things, participants will get well acquainted with
this tool as they learn what it has to offer. Circles and lines will offer different timbres of pitches,
and triangles will play different samples of drum kits. Higher circles and lines will offer higher
pitches.

Technologies Used
• Makey Makey (http://www.MakeyMakey.com/) is a tool that allows keyboard input through
the use of completed circuits and can be used to turn conductive items such as bananas into
keyboard input. The Makey Makey is being used in conjunction with Scratch to provide the
background ambient music. It is connected to the inside of the Box of Wonder to activate the
tracks that have been pre recorded to play.
• Scratch (https://scratch.mit.edu/) is a website that is used to teach basic coding. Scratch will be
used in conjunction with the Makey Makey to provide the background ambient music. When you
shake the box, Scratch plays the pre recorded tracks according to which side of the box has been
activated.
• Google Chrome Music Lab Kandinsky (https://musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/Kandinsky/)
is software developed by Google that uses drawings to create music. Triangles, circles, and lines
make different sounds based upon where on the screen they are drawn. The user can draw
whatever they wish to create music.
