Abstract
This  research  paper  will  compare  and  analyze  various  Tuskegee  university  students’
views  on  spanking  and  corporal  punishment.  This  research  paper  will  also  measure
such  values  as  gender,  class,  and  age  with  respect  to  numerous  questions  to  obtain  a
detailed  summary  of  the  views  of  students.  The  goal  of  this  research  paper  is  to
interpret  the  views  of  students  on  Spanking  and  Corporal  punishment.  This  research
paper  will  use  such  tools  as  graphs,  charts,  and  tables  to  present  its  findings.

Introduction

1. Description  of  the  Problem-‐  The  problem  we  are  measuring  is  the  views  of

Tuskegee  University  students  on  intentional  infliction  of  pain  on  the  body  for

the  purpose  of  punishment,  which  is  classified  as  Spanking  and  Corporal

Punishment.

2. Attributes  to  be  measured  –  We  are  measuring  such  attributes,  as  the

opinions  and  beliefs  Tuskegee  university  students  have  on  spanking  and

Corporal  punishment  my  Perceptions  is  that  the  views  will  vary  depending

on  if  the  individual  received  spankings  from  his  or  her  parents.  The  findings

will  also  be  compared  with  different  variables  and  values  in  efforts  to  better

obtain  a  more  detailed  conclusion.  It  is  my  belief  that  most  men  and  women

are  favorable  toward  spanking  and  corporal  punishment.

3. Hypothesis-  I  hypothesize  that  majority  of  Tuskegee  University  students

agree  with  Spanking  and  Corporal  for  disciplinary  use.  However  I  expect  my

findings  to  show  a  huge  disparity  in  the  views  of  men  on  spanking  and

Corporal  punishment  verses  the  views  of  women.  I  will  use  such  tools  as  a

bivariate  table  and  multivariate  to  present  these  findings.  Since  most  African

Americans  practice  Spanking  I  strongly  feel  students  will  support  spanking

as  a  whole.

4. I  strongly  feel  that  my  findings  will  show  that  gender  will  has  most  disparity.

Secondly  classification  since  most  freshmen  are  just  becoming  adults  and
Survey  Research  Report  1.   4

making  there  own  decisions  they  will  probably  not  support  spanking  and

Corporal  punishment  however  most  upper  classmen  will.  Also  the  age

variable  will  support  this  premise  that  older  students  have  different  views

when  compared  to  younger  students  on  the  issue  of  spanking  and  corporal

punishment.

Discussion  of  background  variables-  These  background  variables  were  chosen  to
help  get  a  better  understanding  of  the  types  of  student  being  surveyed  and  to
understand  how  they  me  feel  in  comparison  to  each  other  based  on  background
information.  These  background  variables  will  be  compared  with  several  questions

do  you  think  that  you  deserved  the  punishment  that  your  parents/guardians  used
on  you  when  you  were  a  child?

Discussion   of   questionnaires   –   these   questionnaires   are   used   to   help   define   the
views   of   the   person   being   surveyed   by   comparing   these   questions   we   will   have   a
deeper   understanding   of   how   individuals   may   differ   and   agree   on   issues   as   it
pertains   to   spanking   and   corporal   punishment.   Therefore   by   using   these
questionnaires  we  will  have  concrete  evidence  to  back  out  findings.

Bivariate   graph   discussion   –   These   graphs   show   the   bivariate   relationship
between  various  levels  of  analyze  such  as  gender  and  how  likely  they  are  to  spank
their  children.  This  information  will  be  helpful  becomes  it  gives  evidence  to  support
that   men   are   more   likely   to   spank   their   children   over   women   and   therefore
supporting  my  hypothesis.

Multivariate  Discussion-‐  These  tables  show  the  relationship  based  on  a
multivariate  levels  analyzing  several  variables  such  as  classfication  in  respect  to
how  likely  they  are  to  use  corporal  punishment  on  there  children  and  also  compares
out  of  those  that  surveyed  how  many  were  actually  were  spanked  growing  up.
Which  will  help  my  research  in  proving  that  most  supporters  of  Spanking  and
Corporal  punishment  will  be  those  who  received  it  as  children.

 Conclusion
In  conclusion  threw  the  research  gathered  I  was  able  to  support  my  hypothesis  with

my  findings  and  illustrate  them  threw  graphs,  charts,  and  tables.  Also  I  used

bivariate  tables  to  support  several  key  facts  that  I  found  in  my  research  as  well  as

multivariate  tables  to  support  my  findings.  Spanking  and  corporal  punishment  is  a

very  controversial  issue  and  will  remain  on  as  long  as  parents  continue  the  practice.

However  many  young  Tuskegee  students  feel  as  they  will  not  spank  their  children  as

a  means  of  discipline.  The  vast  disparity  was  found  in  age  as  I  stated  in  my

hypothesis  it  would  be.  Therefore  I  conclude  that  spanking  and  Corporal

punishment  is  used  commonly  by  parents  as  a  means  of  discipline  and  most  young

Tuskegee  Students  do  not  agree  with  those  methods  however  upper  classmen  21-‐24

believe  they  will  practice  spanking  on  there  children.
