Brake resistors
Braking energy dissipated into the on‐board resistors
Difference between Classic and HESOP
Architecture
Classic substation HESOP substation
• Transformer & rectifier
• 99% braking energy recovery
• No energy recovery
• Traction optimization
• No traction optimization
HESOP – A Better Choice
Other reversible substation HESOP substation
• Partial recovery of braking energy • Simplified architecture
• Potential traction optimization with • 99% braking energy recovery
Thyristor rectifier • Traction optimization
Benefits of HESOP on Infrastructure
Thanks to the voltage regulation in traction mode, HESOP allows to reduce the number of substations
by 20% on average leading to:
• Less real estate and network deviations
• Less civil work
• Less power supply equipment
‐ Reduced quantity of MV Cells, transformers, rectifier, DC switchboards, Auxiliary distribution & cables
‐ Reduced or cancelled feeder cables (for tramway application)
‐ Reduced catenary section (for tramway application)
A traction simulation is required to define the exact level of optimization
Benefits of HESOP
on tunnel & in‐station ventilation
Thanks to full recovery of available braking energy, HESOP allows high line receptivity and
thereby limits train heat dissipations.
This leads to:
• Tunnel & in‐station ventilation / air‐conditioning reduction
• On‐board brake resistor removal
– Train’s weight reduction (metro: 300 kg/car; tramway: 115 kg/car) => traction & energy
consumption reduced
– Train’s available technical space increased: possibility to add more auxiliary equipment on
board such as air conditioning
– Train’s price reduction
Benefits of HESOP
on Energy Consumption
HESOP recovers over 99% of the available braking energy.
• The energy recovered can be re‐used through the station equipment (auxiliaries,
escalators, lighting, ventilation, etc.) or re‐injected into the electricity network.
• The reduction of heat dissipation allows to reduce tunnel & station ventilation or air
conditioning
• The reduced power installed leads to a lower power subscription
HESOP
Benefits of HESOP
•
on Operation
Availability: automatic smoothing of peak loads and traction voltage adjustment when
another substation is in fault mode => Substations will remain in operation even in case
of unexpected peak load
• High Energy quality: Filtering to lower harmonics levels (THDI < 5%) and adjustable
power factor (up to cos phi = 1)
• Line voltage stabilization: even in case of fluctuation on AC side
• Possible network evolutions without any hardware change: line voltage modification,
increase of traffic
• Facilitated maintenance:
– Remote monitoring functions
– Catenary de‐icing function
– Braking resistor removal
– Less use of mechanical brakes
Benefits of HESOP
on the Environment
• HESOP reduces energy consumption and the heat released in the atmosphere i.e.
CO2 emissions
• HESOP uses recyclable materials and is compliant with Eco Design standards
(REACH, RoHS).
• HESOP 1500V development has been selected by European LIFE+ program to
promote environmentally‐friendly actions
