IUPUI Lesson Plan Template

Intern’s Name: Abbie Pontjeris Grade: 1 Subject: Science

Lesson Date: 11/28/2018 Lesson Duration: 30 mins.

Guiding question(s):
1. How is computer coding useful in real life?
2. Why do we need to code?

Rationale: Students will be able to explain basic computer functions.

Standards/Indicators:
K-2.DI.1 Use technology resources to solve age-appropriate problems and communicate thoughts, ideas, or
stories in a step-by-step manner.
K-2.DI.3 Recognize that software is created to control computer operations.
K-2.CD.1 Use standard input and output devices to operate computers and other technologies.
K-2.CD.1 Use standard input and output devices to operate computers and other technologies.

Essential Skills (Objectives):

 Academic Objective: After participating in a coding worksheet, students will be able to write their
own list of commands to code a path to the Santa Hat with 90% accuracy.

Differentiation/Procedures/Instructional Strategies:
1. I will begin the lesson with our objective: Students will be able to write their own list of commands
to code a path to the Santa Hat.
2. I will remind students of yesterday’s activity of coding and how we will be using our skills to
complete a similar task today.
3. I will remind students of what a command is, specific to coding.
4. I will complete an example of an “easy” path on the worksheet that students will be completing.
5. I will bring students to the carpet, where they will observe from the outer edges.
6. I will have the carpet squares set up like the board on our worksheet, where there will be “blockers”
on the paths.
7. I will have one student volunteer to be the game piece that moves on the board.
8. As a class, we will collaboratively create a list of commands to get the student from start to finish on
the carpet board.
9. Students will then go back to their seats and complete the coding worksheet as well as their list of
commands.
10. I will close with having students recall what a command is. I will give a brief explanation of what
coding activity we will be doing tomorrow.

Accommodations (Special considerations or modifications):

 One student is unable to complete first grade level work on his own. I will ask Mrs. Adams to sit with
him and help him complete the assigned tasks.
 One student is unable to speak or understand English. I will ask Mrs. Lehr to sit with him and help
him complete the assigned tasks.

Assessments:

 As a formative assessment, while collaboratively working at the carpet, I will ensure that everyone
understands why each command is given while coding our board by asking students to give me a
thumbs up or thumbs down for if they agree or disagree.
 As a summative assessment, students will complete the coding worksheet board and the list of
commands that go along with it.

Resources/Materials/Technology:

 Carpet
 Various Items used as “Blockers”
 Dry Erase Board and Marker
 Document Camera
 Coding Worksheet
 Crayons
