Module 7 Plans 1-4:

Increasing Children’s Physical Activity in General Education Classrooms During Math,

ELA, Science, and Social Studies Instruction

PART 1: ACADEMIC CONTENT

Identify the academic content you will target for integrating physical activity (this
should be based on a discussion with the cooperating teacher):

Math: Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and
perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.

PART 2: PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Students will work together to show the different elements of geometry by lining up to
make the image with their bodies.
PART 3: MANAGEMENT

The teacher will tell the students that instead of drawing the shapes, they will be making the
shapes with their bodies. The teacher will show the different shapes on the screen, and the
students will make the shape. As soon as they make the shape, the teacher will tell the
students to line back up to be ready for the next one.
Describe what you will do to get and keep the children’s attention (e.g., establish start
and stop signals, use the signals consistently):

The students are expected to keep an appropriate noise level and to pay attention and be
fully involved in the task. If a student becomes disruptive and will not listen to a warning,
then they will be asked to sit down.

Describe your expectations for student behavior during the lessons (e.g., following
directions, keeping noise level appropriate to classroom context), what you will do to
communicate these expectations (e.g., state the expectations before starting the activity,
demonstrating examples/non-examples of what you expect), and what you will do if a
student does not meet the expectations (e.g., warning, removal from the group):
After the end of the lesson, the teacher will have the students try to draw the shapes
to get them calmed back down.
Describe how you will help the children to calm down and transition back to
seatwork following the lessons:

PART 4: INSTRUCTION

The teacher will make sure that the students know what they are doing by showing
an example first, and explaining all the steps so the students understand what the activity
will look like.
Describe how you will ensure that your instruction is clear (e.g., explain the academic
content and the learning activities one step at a time, demonstrate the activities,
intermittently ask students to repeat the steps/directions to make sure they understand
what to do/not to do):
