Module 7 Plans 1-4:

Increasing Children’s Physical Activity in General Education Classrooms During Math,

ELA, Science, and Social Studies Instruction

PART 1: ACADEMIC CONTENT

ELA: Spelling Activity

The students will use a room sized “keyboard” to spell the words to make sentences.

PART 2: PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

ELA:

The students will be making sentences with their spelling words. Instead of writing them or
typing them conventionally, the students will be using a large “keyboard” made out of paper
plates.

PART 3: MANAGEMENT

The teacher will explain to the students that they will be writing the sentences using the
large keyboard. They will go in the order that they line up in, and they will take turns
spelling the words for everyone to try to figure out. As soon as they figure out the sentence,
it will be the next student’s turn.

The students are expected to keep an appropriate noise level, work together as a team, take
turns, and be fully involved in the activity. Students who are disruptive or disobedient will
have to write the sentences using pencil and paper.

As soon as the students are done spelling the words, they will go back to their desks to write
all the spelling words one time for a practice quiz. This is designed to test if the activity
helped their knowledge of the spelling words.

PART 4: INSTRUCTION

The students will be told that the one who is spelling out the sentences will be given a piece
of paper with the short sentence written on it. There will be paper plates on the floor with a
letter on each one, including a blank one for a space and a period. Using the letters and the
space bar and period, they will write the sentence by stepping from one to the next. The
teacher may choose to demonstrate the activity to them. After the student types the
sentence, everyone tries to guess the sentence and the spelling word.
