PART 1: TARGET AUDIENCE

List the school professionals you are targeting with your advocacy plan

This presentation is designed to target the school principal and leadership staff. Physical
education is something that can be overlooked if we are not careful. Teachers have a full plate
already and working physical education into the routine is not always a top priority. Therefore,
for the school to make a difference for all its students, the principal and the staff need to be
involved and supportive of the plan to help the students be more physically active.

PART 2: ADVOCACY STRATEGIES

During a meeting with the principle, PE teacher, and any other leadership who can
attend, I will be presenting a short PowerPoint detailing the need for physical education and
providing options for the school to make improvements to their structure to encourage more
physical activity.

In this PowerPoint, I will be showing how the need for youth physical activity is great,
and how we as a nation are not doing as well as we could. The slides will feature statistics
highlighting the obesity rates, research showing the connection between physical activity and
academic achievement, the federal guidelines and the percentages of schools that meet those
guidelines, and the current state of their school. It will show the amount of time students
actually spend in PE engaged in moderate to vigorous activity, including cancellations and lost
time, and how the school rates with the recommended standards. The PowerPoint will
conclude by showing a host of ways that the school can help get on track, starting with a
physical activity plan. The plan will include reviewing the schedule next year for time to be
allotted to PE, giving teachers resources and information on the importance of physical activity
in the classroom, a plan to track the progress made, a schoolwide emphasis campaign including
posters and intentional physical activity break recommendations, and investments into
equipment to have a thriving physical education program.
